Like others have said the clock thing is designed to maximise adverts. I think OP's idea is great, but it would never work for the adverisement reasons
Side idea:
Basketball is largely useless until the 4th quarter. Make basketball scoring like in tennis were the first team to win X sets wins the game. Obviously, the "score" would reset each set.

No, I want a Field Goal to not automatically win the game. And a turnover to not be an automatic loss? Sure. Why shouldn't the other team earn it. No cost? Get real. It is exactly the same system as before. The cost is the other team would have to get a first down instead of getting a guaranteed victory. If an NFL team throws a pick does the game automatically end in OT? Yeah, I didn't think so. Well, maybe sometimes, with the abortion of new rules they have, which can't figure out what they want to be.
And if you want to be pissy about it, you actually said "sudden death took away most reasonable complaints." First, it is not sudden death. Further, If the point is to let both teams have a touch, then scoring a TD on the first possession shouldn't still be sudden death. Or is the point really just to make it less likely a team wins on a drive where they play for the field goal. Kind of like college.
Your logic is terrible. eznark's is the only "perfect" solution. Play a full quarter until one ends without a tie. Or end the game

No it isn't. That's just something European people claim to argue superiority.
Football is a strategic game. The level of strategy involved in American Football is so far beyond that in Soccer/football that its not even comparable.

You should be glad football exists. Otherwise our best athletes might play soccer (they would actually play baseball, basketball, or hockey) and take away the one sport the rest of the world has to fight over.
