A thread about people who re-use ziploc bags~

Now, tinfoil.... I do make efforts to conserve that since I found out how awfully wasteful it is to make (takes tons of water and renders it toxic).

Wat. I did not know this. tinfoil is usually something I'll use once and then screw up into a ball and throw away. Guess I should be less wasteful with it in the future!

As far as ziplock goes - it will depend on what's in. I generally take a sandwich into work and will usually use the same bag for a few days. My sandwiches are usually fairly dry so I don't think its a big deal. If I had something oily/fatty inside it though then I would toss it out

You're spending extra money for more durable bags that have a zipper slider on it. If you just want to throw them away after one use buy sandwich bags.

The one in your pic is made to be reused. Carrots would be something you definitely should reuse them for. If it's something slimey or greasy then sure, throw it away if you want. But even then they can be ran through the dishwasher and reused.

How's it feel to kill polar bears op?

If it's a heavy duty gallon bag and it held dry goods, I'll usually reuse it. Those things aren't super cheap, they're heavy duty, and it's less waste to reuse it.

I do it differently; I don't use zip bags for food product. Food goes in tupperware type containers that are easier to wash properly and meant to last a long time.

Zip bags *are* reused but I put stuff like parts, screws, cables, clips, etc in them. Non organic.

If we're talking about storing meat in the freezer I wrap it in freezer paper.

Yes I reuse them if I'm putting the same kind of food in them the next day. It's really wasteful. I use tupperwares most of the time though.

I try to reuse the bags I take with me for my apple each day, but the apple is also wrapped in a napkin, uncut, and leaves no juices in the bag.

That being said, I probably wouldn't feel the need to say something to someone else about doing that, especially in a belligerent way.

No surprise at some of the names of the people in this thread without sense. I reuse my ziplocks if I use it for nuts or fruits with the skin still on them. There is more bacteria on doorhandles than in my bags.

I agree it doesn't make sense to reuse bags for something that is messy like a sandwich.

People buying millions of these things and tossing them out after one use can't be good for the environment... that said, if I've stored something I need to thoroughly wash, I'll probably throw it out. If I just put a sandwich, carrots, almonds, or stuff like that in it, I will re-use it for sure.

I do reuse them all the time but then again I basically never put food in them. Wallet/phone when hiking in the rain, toiletries when traveling etc.

If You are that hell bent on taking food to work in "throw away" plastic then just use a bit of cling film, sorry but zip bags??? You are a wasteful monster OP

I reuse them. Why would you throw them out? They cost pennies, but pennies add up, and you are contributing far more waste if you toss them after a single use. It makes no sense to toss them unless they're soiled or wet.

I toss pennies as well. I hate coins in general :)

But reusing ziploc bags probably makes sense. I'm assuming they are not great for the environment.

Use paper sandwich bags. Throw them out in a recycle bin.
For the sake of the lunatic in your office, inform him of this option. His concept of recycling sounds like amateur hour:

Also, plastic forks and spoons? Take a metal one of each to work. Wash them after you use them.

Ok, I made a joke in my first post in this thread, but in all honesty, I'd tell this co-worker to mind his own business.

I use Ziploc bags out of convenience, and I chuck them after one use if its for food. Somehow, perhaps because I have no soul, I still sleep soundly at night.

if you're that concerned about being wasteful shouldn't you be using better reusable containers than plastic bags

Are they meant to be reused so much? I'd assume the plastics would start leaching into your food with such repeated use.

My dad re-uses black trash bags when he mows the lawn or picks up the leaves. It's something I've always just been like... dad... wtf... He would have nasty, smelly, stench bags in the garage for years at a time, reusing them every time he mowed, taking the grass to the drop off place in town, dumping the grass out, taking the bags home, repeat ad infinitum.

I'd be like... jesus, dad, just buy new bags, you get a 50-pack for $5... But he never did. He's probably had the same black trash bags for 10 years.

For zip locks, I toss them ... feels gross to me to have food in there and then use them again, but w/e. Don't care if someone washes and re-uses theirs. We don't go through a lot of ziplocks though. A regular sized box from the super market lasts close to a year in my house.

Your father's city doesn't collect lawn trimmings with the trash?

Same concept as reusing a condom right?
Totally reasonable.

ehehe, I keep frozen chicken in ziplock bags so I can't really do it I think
I use Tupperware cases for most of my lunchbox stuff.

If you insist on being wasteful, the least you can do is buy compostable bags.

Must be nice to be rich enough to pay for these bags. That particular brand comes out to $0.2635 per bag.

The Glad sandwich bags I use cost $0.0329 per bag.Amazon Link for Glad Bags

Considering my family of three uses (on average) 6 bags each weekday (We all take lunches to work/school using 2bags per lunch) We also use bags to divide out snacks/food at home (approximately 20 bags/week).

(52 weeks x 5 work/school days per week * 6 bags per day) + (20 pantry bags x 52 weeks) = 2600 max bags per year.

Compostable: $685.10/year
Glad: $ 85.54/year.

Now this is just the plain retail price. The el-cheapo Glad bags go on sale, and we tend to load up when that happen (i.e. this week at PickNSave [local grocery store] I can get 100 bags for $2, which would take my yearly cost down to $52/year).

I live paycheck to paycheck and can't justify an extra $600/year for something that I'm just going to throw away.

I am being both completely facetious and serious at the same time. This topic deserves both.

Depends on what was in the ziploc bag. If it was chips, crackers, Vegetables or some other snack food, I'll reuse it for a similar purpose because why not. Though if its a sandwich or had any type of topping which could be rubbed off and stuck to the bag, Its going in the garbage.

I mostly use Ziploc bags for freezing meat, so obviously I don't re-use them in that case.

Occasionally I'll slip washed romaine leaves into a bag, and there I'll happily reuse it because, well, it's just lettuce.

I remember back as a child I used to play with the small/medium-sized ziploc bags by filling water in them for reasons I can't remember. Even after just leaving it on a desk they started to leak out and make small puddles after a couple minutes soooo..... durability my ass. Toss that shit after first use.

Edit: No this wasn't a one-time thing.

I reuse zip-loc bags when I can. Just clean it with some soap and water, and then let it dry out. Why not save money by being utilitarian? I wouldn't be an asshole about it, though, like the guy that confronted OP seemed to be doing.

That's not a problem.

People who reuse butter containers though. *shivers*

I have my weed in a little baggy.

That same baggy, I sometimes set a couple of mints in there.

I knew someone that tossed in chewing gum with their weed ziplock. Rather convenient for them!

I do this sometimes depending on what it was used for, especially if its for more of the same item. I rinse out my water bottles and reuse those too.
