A tribute to The Tyrant: Jaedong has retired

https://twitter.com/EGJaedong

Jaedong has expressed his retirement from pro-gaming, Let us remember not just the most dominating zerg of all time, but the most successful player of all Broodwar. Not to mention the human face against the utter machine that was Flash.

His Starcraft 2 career may have fallen short of his Broodwar legacy. But let us join together to celebrate the life of Broodwar's greatest son.

JAEDONG! JAEDONG! JAEDONG! JAEDONG!

One of the three pillars that held up the entire genre.

Gods bless this guy, Bisu and Flash.

I will forever, FOREVER remember the tyrant.

Aww, the few times I tried to get into Starcraft were because of him. Ultimately it never clicked for me but I liked watching him play on stream and in events. Wishing him all the luck with whatever he does after this.

Noooooooo. Was one of the guys I looked up to when first getting into SC. Dude's a legend and is a model for Zergs everywhere.

He was the one who got me into Brood War as an esport. I loved his play so god damn much back then. I hope he finds success whatever he does next.

Thanks for all the good games, JD.

We can't talk about your career without bringing up Flash. Looking back, it seems like you could have won 6, 7, or even 8 titles if Flash hadn't been around. What do you think?

JAEDONG: I've never thought once that I could have won six, seven championships if Flash hadn't been there. I only thought that 'this is as far as my ability goes,' regarding my five championships and many runner-ups. That's the way I accept it, then and now.

Also, I think it's because of Flash that I was able to get even better results. The existence of a rival is extremely important. Because Flash was my rival, I was able to come this far, for so long, and even continue as a gamer in StarCraft 2.

That's about as a gracious champion as you can imagine. Dude worked himself to the bone.

FIGHT ME

I loved the fuck out of Savior, but that thread lead to the disillusionment of the Broodwar scene in general, so....

Blizzcon StarCraft2 is looking to be pretty good this year. It seems like it might be a fitting tribute to a lot of retiring progamers.

Blizzcon this year has all the makings of a last hurrah. The divorce from the Korean community is pretty much writing on the wall. I really don't know how far the community can go without Korean support...

I don't watch Starcraft anymore but I started around the time Jaedong was coming up, end of an era.

From sAviOr to Jaedong. Also gotta mention Flash. <3

Although 2006 was Jaedong’s first year in the professional StarCraft scene, he was already doing extremely well, having an overall record of 51 wins and 27 losses (65.4% win rate). This was the second best Zerg win rate of 2006, right behind sAviOr (GGPlay was third with 63.5%). His early wins against notable players included sAviOr, Reach, NaDa, GoRush, July, and iloveoov. It was clear early on in Jaedong’s career that his Zerg vs. Protoss and Zerg vs. Zerg were outstanding, being both above 70% (vs. Protoss 75% and vs. Zerg 71.4%). After the 2006 Season Lee Jae Dong was prized on 2nd Annual Korea e-Sports Awards with the Rookie of the Year Award.

It was Jaedong’s massive streak against Terran in mid-late 2007 that brought him into the mainstream spotlight. During this run he went 12–0 against Terran, which included scalps against NaDa and Hwasin. Jaedong’s rise during 2007 coincided with the demise of sAviOr. He finished off his brilliant 2007 by capturing his first Starleague title. Finally in January 2008 Jaedong captured the throne of No.1 Zerg according to the KeSPA Ranking.

QQ

One of the best. Him and Grubby are the two that not only got me interested in watching e-sports, but kept me watching.

Just a reminder that the MedryBW channel on Twitch has an ongoing playlist of all the Broodwars comp vids that the west could possibly archive (If you were part of the Teamliquid days back then, you remember the torrents). Enjoy and reminisce ol' chums. :)

Amazing quote.

Greatest Zerg ever. Unparalleled career over BW and SC2, as artosis said on Twitter whatever he does next I'm sure he'll rise to the top at it
