About to buy a new cell phone. S3 or I5 ?

Why not a Lumia?
I've been out of the WP game for a while but I personally left because of the App situation. That might have changed but games and apps didn't come out for Windows Phone, they came out for iOS and Android. Many popular apps (Instagram, for example) were still missing from the store. I just never thought of Windows Phone to be a good ecosystem.

The OS is great, the speed is great, the integration of various services is great but if you're into apps, it's just not on par with Android or iOS.

OP should go with whatever he likes the most. You cannot go wrong with either but certain people will be more happy with Android than they'd ever be with iOS and vice versa. I like Android, the customisation possibilities, the fact that it's fast these days and that I can play with a DualShock. I really like the build quality of the iPhone 5, though. My girlfriend is really happy with her phone.
I'm as picky about resolution as the next guy and I really fail to see what the commotion is about the S3's screen, it's gorgeous.
I get what people mean from a technical standpoint but I don't see any disadvantage and prefer it to the Vita's screen, for example.

Update, I don't think you can use anything to control the S3's screen(as you would your finger).

Perhaps the fork was pulling an electric current from my hand?

The plastic pen didn't work.

I really love my Note 2, I'm just saying. I'm just not a fan of how closed up the iPhone is at all. I'd probably have an iPhone if I could have a clean interface, but to each their own.

Android for the tech/customization, Apple for the ecosystem. It's arguable that Android devices are better at playing games, but if you want to go where the "good" ones are you're looking at the iPhone.

game apps i5. style, customization, freedom s3

I've still yet to see these must have apps, hell on either side, that are so damn awesome. There are the things built into everyones phone that actually makes their phone useful, and then there's a metric load of shit apps out there that are nothing but distractions for those with small minds.

The few third party apps which I actually find help improve my quality of life is Mint.com, Whatsapp, and XBMC Remote. What good are another 200,000 apps in the store going to do me? Anyone else have hidden gems to suggest?

people are app addict. I still use dumb phone so what do i know. If hae to buy new phone though i would buy note 2 in heart bit. nothing come close.

Good for you. The selection of apps on the App store > apps on the Play store.

The apps are comparable on both phones. Neither is superior. Regardless, why on earth would you let apps dictate a phone purchase exclusively? Doesn't make sense, unless you don't have a tablet / laptop other accessories.

Holding each phone at the same time - I can't imagine any logical person not recognizing the S3's nicer style and larger - more appealing screen. Unless of course you're an Apple Zealot.

Depends on what you want. iOS will always get support first due to the App Store ($), and if you like having games, iOS is better.

Regardless, why on earth would you let apps dictate a phone purchase exclusively?

Since the top of the line phones are pretty comparable, what's wrong with someone finding apps to be a big reason to buy one over the other?

Along with that fact, apps are pretty much the reason why smartphones are "smart".

Doesn't make sense, unless you don't have a tablet / laptop other accessories.

Heh, that's pretty shortsighted. Many people don't want to carry a tablet or laptop on the go with them.

Many don't have a tablet or laptop either.

I don't find the plastic on the S3 to be nicer in style at all. The screen is nice but I prefer the iPhone for one hand use on the go. May not be the biggest screen but its definitely still one of the best looking screens on a phone.

...Unless of course you're an Apple Zealot.

Haha, should have known that that's how you feel.

So silly.

Depends.

I realised I never really cared about gaming (or most apps) on the phone. What I really want is a phone that looks good and that's simple for me to browse the internet with, and to use as an emergency USB drive for work related issues

And since most of what I do is tied with my Google account(s), Galaxy Nexus was my choice. Glad it was, because the TRON/futuristic-ui is so wonderful to look at and it works really well with no hitches too.

Took me a while to really think about this though, since I've had an iPad with tons of apps before buying the phone. I just realised I don't really miss most of the apps (twitter, facebook, shazam and whatsapp are the only core ones for me) so I don't really feel like it matters.

:lol

There is this thing called good software + good hardware = good experience. You can have the great half and still have a lacking product.

Unless of course you're an Apple Zealot.
:lol Got you ;)

I use unified remote (just found out about it recently), samsung remote, beyondpod and that's about it for stuff that wasn't pre-installed or had an equivalent pre-installed (ie I use dolphin browser etc). I play the odd game, mainly angry birds or wheres my water type stuff and the vast majority of my usage is browser based. Oh tesla LED is useful but all it really does is turn the light on or off.

I thought apps were going to be a much bigger deal to me before I started using smartphones. Don't get me wrong, there are some great useful ones out there, but 95% of my smartphone use (2.5 years on android) has been pre-installed/stock stuff.

You kidding? The S3 is made of plastic. PLASTIC.

The iPhone 5 is made of aluminium and glass.

I really wanted an S3 when they first launched, since I hate the 12 month gap between iPhones, but the screen just ruined it for me. I could see each individual pixel and it was just too dotty/pixellated. I noticed that after literally 3-4 seconds of first playing with one. So yes, the screen is larger, but I definitely find it inferior to any of Apple's Retina displays.

Had both phones (now only the iPhone 5). While Android is great and all, apps/games are severely lacking and usually even if an app does come over, its usually at least 6 months later when all the love for it has died down.

While its not as smooth as people claim, the S3 was pretty fluid after dropping Touchwiz and the like. Its a great phone if you want to be able to customize it (would have to root it of course) unless you're just into changing launchers and icons. The big screen is great too but the cheap plastic just wasn't doing it for me.

Also, a majority of my friends have the iPhone and we have a group chat via iMessages so it was a pain in the ass when all my group texts came in individually.

Switched to the iPhone 5, then to the Note 2, then back to the iPhone 5. Haven't looked back since. If apps and gaming are important to you, go with the iPhone. If a big screen and customizing without jailbreaking is important to you, go with the Xperia Z and not the GS3.

I'm getting the sense some of you people are the smartphone screen equivalents of audiophiles. I can't possibly imagine needing a higher DPI than this on a handheld device. I've got an S3 and the screen is fucking gorgeous, and I'm in love with how big it is. Main- possibly only- reason I didn't switch over to iPhone was because of screen size.

Ios feels so stale. At this point there is no way I would switch to an iphone when Apple has been resting on their laurels the last 3+ years. Maps was a huge disaster and I think it opened a lot of people's eyes.

I have the s3 now and absolutely love it. Google now is brilliant. There's nothing like it on the iphone. Maybe there are more games on the iphone, I dunno. I remember when the Temple Run game was only on the iphone and my friend was like this game is so awesome and it's not on your dumb phone. Then it came to android, and guess what? It suuuuuuuucks!!!! Like most phone games, they are fun for maybe 5 minutes. Other apps everything on the iphone you can get on an android phone.

There isn't any "phone wars" type stuff happening in here. It's actually very polite. Sounds like you just read the OP and assumed the worst.
I just posted a little too soon. It is all there in the most recent posts after OP made his choice.

GAF is pretty predictable.

Google Now wasn't anything crazy for me. There are also plenty of Google Now alternatives on the App Store that some people claim are even better. Lol @ Temple Run. Not even going to list the 109582952 quality games/apps not available on Android. Ironically, Google Maps on iOS is better than Google Maps on Android now.

No, please list just three. I've been down this road before. Name just three killer apps on the iphone that aren't on android phones.

And lol that Google maps is better on iphone! How is it working having ios default to google maps when you click an address. haha

I doubt there is an app that does everything Google Now does better. No companies is going to do data mining than they do.

Walking Dead, Hero Academy, Clash of Clans.

I'm definitely not an audiophile, or even a screenophile. I just found the S3's screen to be hugely underwhelming because it was so dotty/pixellated. Especially on shadows etc.

Weird maybe my phone is bugged but it opens up Google Maps right away when I click on an address.

Umm not mentioning stuff like Flipboard, Instagram, HBO Go, Netflix, etc and all the other apps that were exclusive to iOS for like 1+ year

Here's some basic stuff

P90x
Nike+
Fantastical
Walking Dead
Infinity Blade
Scribblenauts
Phoenix

I don't understand the hype for mobile gaming. The touch-screen controls almost always suck, especially when the screen is too small. I'd only ever emulate games on my phone, but I'd have to use a gamepad with a mount.

Can you emulate on iOS?

There are plenty of games that are optimized for touch controls. Not a big fan of the ones with on screen buttons everywhere though. Yes, they have a PSX, GBA, SNES, Genesis emulator. Not sure about controller support though. Maybe via jailbreak but who really plays those games on tiny 4-5" screens?

The Room is an awesome game that fully takes advantage of touch and the gyroscopes. It's a little short though, but they plan on releasing more chapters.

Pretty sure HBO Go was available at the same time. I saw the commercial for the first time on HBO, checked on my phone, and there it was! Way to exaggerate about 1+ year delay. Haha! That's about how long the delay was to get the Google Maps app, right? I had it for years.

And I just googled it, but it looks like it goes both ways. Still no swype on iphone? Really? Yikes!

Then there was some Dark Legends game that came out on Android and then 1+ year later it came out on ios. Google Chrome was out on android first.

Any file manager since apparently there isn't one for the iphone.

That was from a quick google search. I dunno guys

I think being able to play fifth generation console games a 5" screen mounted to a gamepad is extremely freaking cool, but maybe that's just me. :I

Thanks, guys, for the responses.

EDIT: And OP, if you want a really cool game, check out Battleheart. I'm pretty sure it's for iOS.

Funny. HBO Go wasn't supported on my Galaxy Nexus for at least 6 months when I had it. Fragmentation at its worst. It was also released 3 months after the iOS version to be exact without full functionality on all phones. My mistake. Wasn't talking exclusively about HBO Go. Instagram came 2 years later to Android, not 1. Netflix came 1.2 years later. Nice try.

You do realize the iPhone had Google Maps until iOS6, right? I also had plenty of Android phones with Google Maps in between so I really couldn't care less.

If you're already into the Apple "ecosystem" (Macbook, Apple TV, iTunes) then I would heavily suggest an iphone 5.

I personally love mine. But I hate AT&T. They are so full of suck in NY. But then again so I Verizon in mid-town. But the phone itself is rock solid...when the screen doesn't detach. Which just happened to me last week. Thankfully a quick trip to the Apple Store got me a replacement phone. That's much preferable than mailing it in. Waiting. Getting it back.

Battery life is solid.

But man oh man. The OS on the iPhone is a stale mess. I prefer Jelly Bean on my nexus tablet...by far.

Yep mention the handful of games that came first to Android.

OMG a Google app came out on a Google OS phone first! Really?! Not to mention Safari runs circles around it.

Lmao so now you're mentioning apps that aren't even allowed on the App Store because it messes with code and the UI? Oh! Apple has PassBook and Android doesn't! -_-
