About to start Mass Effect 3... some questions

I can't answer the questions about DLC or mods, but if the gender choices for Shepard are two and you dislike one of those, is it really hard to figure out if you should choose FemShep?

MOD - Controller support

Oh god no. A third person shooter with a pad? Might as well suggest gamepads for an FPS!

The horrors.

Also, I'd third Citadel DLC as a recommendation, but don't play it until before the lasts et of missions. It was just a great set of final moments with each of your crew, really heartfelt goodbye to the series, IMHO. You can't miss it if you've played the trilogy.

Yeah, I play as Infiltrator and while I think gamepad is fine for most games, a mouse is a must for the sweet headshots.

So, I have the PC version for a while (no DLC) and I will probably play this soon. I have a few questions before I start, though:

1 - Which are the essential DLC? Keep in mind I'm only interested in stuff that fixes the problems people had with the ending and the main story. If it's only side stuff with no relevance to the main arc, I'm probably not going to get it even if it's well done.

2 - At which point in the game I absolutely need to have them installed? I'm asking because I'm wondering if I can start the vanilla game now while I wait a little longer for an eventual price drop on the DLCs.

Thanks!

Essential DLC: Citadel > Leviathan > From Ashes

Omega is fine but totally skippable.

I would get From Ashes as early as you can, the others can wait. I recommend playing the Citadel right before the end of the game.

I bought the digital collector's edition on Origin a few years back on sale. It came with From Ashes and I was shocked that it was DLC. If you're into the lore at all it's absolutely essential.

This thread makes me want to fire up my old save and pick up some of the other DLC. It's never going on sale on PC.

Does the ME trilogy on PS3 include those? I bought it and played through it all (did all side quests) but I can't remember those specific missions you're talking about.

I recently fixed up my ME trilogy on PC to play through it again. Not played it since ME3 release and I played it on console then. Thought the ending destroyed the whole series. Hell, I still think it did. The only reason I can even think of replaying it now is that I can use MEHEM on the PC version. Not because I need a happy ending really (
I don't care if Shepard dies
), it's the other changes that matter most.

I don't care about the texture mods except to fix the horrible eyelashes and Shepard's face texture (why does the main character look like an NPC compared to the squad mates!? Horrible!) and I can't stand the mouse/keyboard controls so I play with a controller mod.

All DLC for ME3 except perhaps Omega is important. I don't think you'll see any sales. I think the only sale they've had for points was a mistake or something :P

Citadel and the extended ending fixed enormous characterization issues.

Leviathan fixes the contextualization of reaper logic.

Javik is essential in the sense that if you are a player with experience in previous games, and are well versed in the lore of Mass Effect, then meeting this character has been a long time coming.

Also nice to bring Javik along on missions as one of your team members if you have any interest in the lore, he has insights randomly throughout missions that were pretty cool.

Spoiler:
Also cool that he isn't really like anything you would probably expect as a prothean going in.

Allright, ended up getting From Ashes for now. I can decide later if I'll get the others since they are geared towards the ends.

Installing the HD textures now!

Actually Citadel is more of a mid way point in the game... And keeps going till the end.

4 - Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

1. Extended Cut is free, make sure to download it. None of the other DLC is "essential", but bits and pieces can substantially buff the lore and overall plot. Leviathan and From Ashes give additional exposition to the Reapers and lore of the Milky Way. Omega is fun, but not necessary. Citadel is a fan service send-off, and clearly written to be the last thing players experience even if it's not canonically "the end".

2. All DLC can be played at any point post-intro pre-point of no return. It doesn't really make a difference when you do them. Though if you do get Citadel I feel it's best played after finished the game, booting up an old save.

3. Force texture filtering through your control panel, maybe SMAA through Gedosato or something (since SGSSAA is kinda broken in recent Nvidia drivers). There's a workable control pad mod, if you prefer that. Otherwise it's pretty smooth sailing.

4. Not really.

Thanks. I have From Ashes installed now, how do I access the DLC?

Also, the HD textures make a massive difference, wow!

For From Ashes, it'll just show up as a location you can hit on the Galaxy Map once you have progressed far enough in the story (which is shortly after
Mars
I believe, which is basically shortly after you get access to the Galaxy Map). Go to Eden Prime.

For all the other DLC, you'll get an e-mail alerting you to another location at the Citadel you can go to. Then, when you actually go, you'll be presented with a list of possible locations (which is not the list of things like Hospital, Council Area, etc.). Go to the appropriate area and the DLC will kick off.

Right now I'm having to deal with a "unable to authorize the DLC" message upon starting the game though. Anyone else had this problem before?

Are you logged into your EA/Origin/Bioware/Whatever the fuck they're calling it this week account in the game?

Yeah, I'm logged in the Origin app.

In the game itself, does it say it's connected to EA servers? It's possible that there may be some firewall issue blocking the game specifically.

I haven't had your issue, just trying to spitball possible solutions.

Hmm, I'm not sure. It does show a message saying it's connecting to EA servers, then the error message pops up saying "Unable to authorize the listed DLC. Please log in to the Alliance Network with the account used to purchase the DLC".

When I go to the DLC option in the menu, the Origin tab pops up showing From Ashes as installed.

All this talk makes me wish Bioware just do a "Definitive edition" of Mass Effect trilogy.
Where all the DLC is merged into the game and are "activated" at certain moments in the game.

The only DLC that I'd deem optional is Omega, everything else you should definitely get. Although there seems to be a small hole with the Omega DLC missing.

On a side note: Mass Effect DLC is ridiculous in pricing. I already own it all on 360, I'd like to get the trilogy on PC, but you still have to buy it all individually. No GoTY edition and the compilation lacks the DLC. I cannot justify buying it all again at full price, years later. They need to put that stuff on sale every once in a while. It just makes me want a XBone remaster all the more.

A million people already answered but I have a thing about answering a list of questions. I just can't stop myself. And I love Mass Effect.

All of the DLC is good, but Omega is the least good of the bunch. It's almost like a side story. It really only answers the plot speedbump (it's not a big enough deal to call it a plot hole) of why the heck Omega hardly factors into the final story.

Don't wait for a price drop. The game is 3 years old and I don't think they've ever gone on sale. The content is good and it's worth paying for. I don't subscribe to the prevailing theory that just because a game isn't brand new it has no value, so take that for what you will.

Texture modding should only be attempted if you are an extremely patient person that can handle modifying files, performing backups, and being frustrated when things don't work correctly 100% of the time. There is no easy plugin system like Elder Scrolls, and there are no installers that do everything for you. It takes a long time and you WILL run into issues.

Multiplayer is actually awesome. You can play types of characters that you never get to play as during the main saga. Remember the Biotic God Volus? You can roll with one of those in multiplayer.

Get the Citadel DLC and do it just before the last mission. The later you do it in the game, the more characters appear.

I also consider From Ashes essential. It adds a great character with great interactions throughout the game.

I dunno what mods you are using but this fix might be needed depending on that.
Thanks, will try that later today!

Thanks! I guess I'm lucky because texmodding was fairly easy and it's totally worth it as it looks glorious. Though it might be the cause of the DLC error, but let's see if I can fix that today.

Do people still play the multiplayer on PC? It's probably a wasteland by now...

Thanks, will try that later today!

I was able to find matches easily a few months ago.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to play since because when I moved over to Win10 my game just won't run. EA gave me a brand new copy and it still doesn't work for me

Using Texmod is easy but the changes aren't permanent; you have to do that process every time you play the game. Using ME3Explorer is permanent but complicated.

Yes, people still play! Every so often I hop into a game and I never have to wait. It's co-op which is almost always fun.

1 - Extended Cut is free so make sure you have that installed. Story-wise, From Ashes and Leviathan are absolutely essential, enough so that it's complete bullshit they're relegated to DLC. Citadel is fantastic but the extent of your enjoyment from it will depend entirely on how invested you are in the characters. If you love them, definitely pick it as it's built to be the last you see of them and serves as a better goodbye than the actual ending.

2 - I recommend doing From Ashes pretty much immediately, it adds a very interesting character who is integrated into the game a lot better than the DLC party members of ME2. The earlier you do it, the more you get out of it. Leviathan consists of a handful of missions that you aren't locked into finishing once you start so that can be done at your own pace. However, while it is available from the start I don't recommend doing it then as I feel it messes with the pacing of the story. Being as vague as I can be, I suggest playing Leviathan after the Rannoch arc has concluded. If you pick up Citadel, play it after you have completed the main story! A lot of people always suggest playing Citadel right before you're locked into the finale, don't! Like I said before, it's designed to be the last thing you experience of Mass Effect 3 and the trilogy's characters. Trying to fit it into the main game logically doesn't work as its premise is so ridiculous that you could argue it's not even a canon plotline if you wanted to. It's a final wink and a nod to players.

3 - I'm not fully clued in on this myself as I've yet to play it on PC but I do know that a user on the Bioware forums called Jean Luc made texture mods that look great and don't stray from the original art. Try looking that up.

4 - Nothing that comes to mind.

If you don't like Male Shep then don't play as him. You're not going to miss anything choosing one gender over the other. It's not a popular opinion but I actually thought Mark Meer eclipsed Jennifer Hale's performance in ME3, although they both do a good job.

Hope you enjoy your time with the game. It gets a lot of flack but it does do a lot of things right also.

I used ME3 Explorer. It wasn't too bad following instructions. It does take several hours to install though. But since it's a one time deal, it's worth it. The loading is far shorter too (about 3-5 minutes agains 10-20 minutes with Textmod depending on your rig).

Don't get caught up in the whole "MeervsHale" bs, OP. Just go with what you want. Both are great. Make sure you get the DLC, especially Leviathan and Citadel. Enjoy the game, minus its crap ending it's still a great experience.

From Ashes honestly should have just been in the game proper. Javik's perspective feels too important to the overall lore to be left to DLC.

Leviathan is decent for filling out vague plot nonsense. Citadel is good for any fan service/catharsis you may not get from the regular game.

1. Leviathan and Citadel, plus the extended ending. Both DLCs are relevant to the main arc.

2. Before the final mission.

3. Dunno about that.

4. Try the multiplayer, if there are still players. It's great and addicting.

4 - I kind of hate male Shep (how can you not hate him?). Should I go fem shep?

This is my least favorite comment on NeoGAF.

FemShep is the best Shep.

I dunno what mods you are using but this fix might be needed depending on that.

It worked! Thanks again!

I can't get over how gorgeous characters looks with HD textures.

I just realised that importing a character from ME2 (I got a save from that site) makes my character overleveled since all of the saves are like level 30 already. That's weird. The game also imports your level and number of skill points from ME2? Doesn't that break the game? I started the game with 50 skill points.

As good as Citadel DLC is and how right people are to suggest buying it, it doesnt "fixes the problems people had with the ending and the main story" mentioned in the OP.

It's mostly a great, fun, fanservice DLC full of humor.

Ugh, now I'm thorn about starting with a level 30 character or start fresh with level 1. :(

Doesn't starting at level 30 unbalances the game?

I didn't think so. My first playthrough was an import playing on Hard and I found it fairly challenging, but nothing really hard. I'd recommend starting on Insanity for sure, though, since you can always bump it down but if you don't feel the need then you'll get the achievement. :P
