I've always found haha to be too short to be literal laugh. It sounds cynical almost like Nelson in the Simpsons. Haha. I only write haha for when I'm not amused but I had to reply with fake laugh.
I always opted for longer hahas (for ex: hahahahaha) and added some mispronunciation if it is supposed to be uncontrollable laugh. (For ex: hahahaahahahhah)

lol for when what I'm saying could be taken seriously (a way to signify it was humorous). If it is actually funny, haha, if it is hilarious hahahahahah and other times "holy shit i'm in tears."

Most of the time "lol" is used as a buffer instead of signifying laughter.

Personally, "lmao" and "Hahaha" show real laughter. Two "ha's" equal no laughing but a smirk towards the situation. Texting dynamics are serious business lol.

Sometimes I use "lol" to both mean a smirk or a light chuckle. But if I'm laughing loud enough to get shushed/kicked out of a library, I'll use the other ones. Or I'll just add an exclamation point onto the "lol".

Even if they're not really used like that anymore, it's ingrained in me from being the common format in the MUD that I've been playing since the mid-90s.

Of course, in some places < and > are ignored as HTML tags, in which case one has to use:
