Ace Attorney Investigations 2 Fan Translation released [all cases, beta]

Would be lovely if someone could put this on a cartridge like they did for Mother 3. I know it would probably be unofficial and most likely illegal but who wants to play it with a guide not me! How do y'all go about playing the fan translation in the first place?

well the OP has a link. and the link has instructions.

Import the game and play fan translation on an emu or buy a R4 card. The mods here have approved such a method. Just don't forget to buy the JPN game to support it!

Not sure my R4 works anymore lol. I haven't used it in years. I don't even think I remember how to even use the damn thing. I'll have to wait then since I don't have the job quite yet. But looking forward to playing it someday.

I hope we see another AAI game in the west but also that Feudal AA game too lol. Mod approves piracy as long as you buy a legit copy is the craziest thing I have seen on here. Is that Tales of Hearts thing still going on or did it get canned cuz the Vita port do being localized?

Anyone ever know what happened to the Captain Rainbow fan translation, I played through it with a guide but would love to see a translation alas Fatal Frame 4 where you can patch it while using the disc to play it.

Also do I really have to rip the game myself and apply the patch? I never did that before and don't think I have the stuff to do that, if I just bought the game and then downloaded the complete file are the mods against that?

AA5's villain was rather weak to be honest, so it's no surprise that this one easily bests it.

I get what you mean, but the _identity_ of the killer and its reveal was anything but weak.

Top 3. Hell, the villain was better than the villain in AA5, imo.

I not only agree, but I also think that (spoilers for both games)
AA5's big bad reveal felt like an inferior retread of this one. The "remembering a line from earlier on" thing, and having the big bad be a character you would never suspect worked better here, since we learn about who Simon really is and why he manipulated everyone. Plus the final confrontation didn't lose momentum the same way AA5's did. I never really liked how the Phantom was just a nameless spy, and him turning out to be Fulbright didn't really change anything from previous cases. Sure, the reveal was shocking, but that's about it.

I too understand where you're coming from, I just didn't feel any attachment to them. Yeah the reveal was hype, but then what? You can't even attach a name or face to them either (I realize that was the angle of the whole spy-assassin thing, but in a game (series, even) brimming with personailty, having a character being the antithesis of that kinda left me hangin'.

True, true. I guess the 'hype' was big enough for me to excuse that part, but it's definitely a shortcoming.

Totally agree about how they were both revealed.

I think my favourite part of case 5, other than the killer reveal and final showdown, was the part when
Edgeworth convinces Sebastian that he's not a worthless prosecutor and then supports him when he goes up against his father.
Such good character development. I've not felt so many chills hearing the cornered theme kick in
when he presents the evidence that will put Blaise away
since the Trials and Tribulations final case.

It's a shame that
after that moment, Sebastian takes care of the trial on his own and we don't see him until the credits interview. I hope we see him show up in another game.

It's a shame, but I think it would have somewhat diluted
Sebastian's character arc. It's a good moment for his character to end on for the rest of the game and it's pretty much everything his presence was building towards. Having him then reappear as yet another helper taking down Simon wouldn't have felt right.

Fuck me, I clicked on one of the case 5 spoiler tags, thinking it was still AA5 discussion. How foolish of me. :( Got potentially spoiled on the killer, but as long as I'm not certain, it's fine. My fault for not getting on with it.

(You need not react to this post if you know anything.)

Yeah, that's true.
I don't think that circus tent could have fit many more characters in it.

I am lost. Could someone help me out with a bit towards the end of case 4?
I'm at
Ending Part 1. Cross examining the old lady and I've pressed every statement now. She said that "I relayed everything to Karin. After that it was none of my beeswax!" Am I supposed to object there? If so, what?

There's a clear contradiction in that testimony. Just look at the autopsy report and consider what's going on.

Well yeah I know what the contradiction is (at least I think I do). I just have no idea what to present. I am supposed to present it at that statement, right? Thanks for the speedy reply btw

edit: Got it. I'm dumb I thought I had presented that piece of evidence to that statement already >__>

edit 2: Advanced to part 2 of the end of case 4. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? BRAIN IS MELTING

My game is finally in!

OK, I'm gonna need some help to get this on my 3DS, because I've never done this sort of thing before:

1. Which flash cart is good for this game? I need one that is compatible with the 3DS XL.

2. How do I actually get the ROM from the original cartridge to the flash cart? Do I need another device for that?

I think I can handle the actual patching, I just want to know what I need to actually do the process.

Hm, that requires me to get a micro SD card, which apparently needs a micro SD adapter in order to connect it to my computer. Isn't there also a way for me to just use Wi-Fi or something?

And what flash cart do you have?

The DSTWO is the flash card, and comes with a micro SD adapter, but not the card. You're going to need a micro SD card regardless of what card you use.

Oh, I thought DSTWO was an OS, going by the main site for it. >.>

EDIT: Some sites say that I need something like Wooddumper to actually dump the ROM, but that looks like it requires hacking. The 3DS is not hackable, though...

EDIT2: Hm, I think I'm understanding it better. Seems weird that the DSTWO flash cart doesn't come with the OS for it, though.

I thought that now I've finished every AA game so far, I'd have a go at ranking all the cases from best to worst. I know everyone usually ranks the games as a whole, but I had a hard time doing that because there are individual cases in certain games that are great and some that aren't as good. Spoiler naming the names of cases for spoiler reasons, but not the game the cases are from.

I probably missed something, but there you have it. Also, I don't think there's a single case in the series I dislike completely. Even the ones near the bottom have redeeming qualities. Also I only included VS Layton chapters that have a courtroom battle in them.

You can find all the files and links at GBATemp. Their forums have a section dedicated to the DSTwo. Check the beginner's guide. Buy a microSD card for cheap from Amazon or something. Most sites selling the flash cart offer them as an optional add-on but they're way overpriced for the sizes compared to retail stores.

Yeah, I noticed that. A 16 GB SD card (with micro SD) costing an extra $26?

(Incidentally, how big should the micro SD be? Is 2GB enough?)

There's no reason why it should. They keep the OS up to date on the website so that various DSi and 3DS updates by Nintendo do not remove support. If it were just on the cart and an official Nintendo update blocked it, well then you're boned. This way, they can just mass produce the same cart they made years ago and you yourself keep up to date with their software, which is extremely quick to update after Nintendo patches. By now, Nintendo's given up on blocking it since this method is so efficient, so there probably won't be any more DSTWO updates.

Rise from the Ashes evokes a very definite mood. I almost feel like it is its own game.

Everything about it felt so different and fresh. I loooooooooooooooooooove it. (Except for the part where the shoehorned Edgeworth in.)

Holy fucking shit @ Case 4!
It really does feel like the final case. I'm baffled that there's still one more case to go, and supposedly even better! I just got to the point where Courtney indicts Blaise Debeste. Interested to see how Case 4 ends.

case 5 will blow your mind.

Sorry for double post but I couldn't hold this in!

Major case 5 speculation/spoilers.
So I just got to the part where Edgey realizes the Yatagaru's Badge has been bugged. I know this is an extreeeeeme longshot, but I'm starting to feel like Nicole Swift is the kidnapper... She knew about the kidnapping, she talks somewhat similarly to the kidnapper on the phone, and she has a red hood. I'm probably batshit insane and I'm 99% certain I'm wrong but I needed to get it out of my system lol. After AA5 who knows what these fuckers will pull >_____>. In all seriousness I'm assuming Sirhan Dogen is actually the big bad though. No evidence but just a hunch.

Just finished up Case 3. It was pretty fantastic, I thought. A little complicated but it wasn't that bad.

Jumbled up thoughts:
Being able to play as Gregory was awesome and something totally unexpected. All of the minor characters were fun and Larry was great as he usually is (hearing his old theme put a smile on my face). Seeing von Karma's tactics in action really drives home just how evil and despicable he was. I cannot stand Justine Courtney, ugh! At least Debeste manages to make me laugh pretty often despite his uselessness, lol. Gumshoe isn't nearly as stupid as he was in Investigations 1 which is a massive improvement, he was way too stupid in that game for no real reason. Detective Badd and Ray Shields are such great characters, they're both so cool. Gustavia was so cold hearted, like... man. No sympathy. But his theme song was amazing! I felt so bad for Katherine Hall and Jeff Masters, I almost cried at the end when they told Jeff that his time was almost up. :')
Sorry for such a mess of thoughts lol. It'll go down as my second favorite 3rd case of all the games after AA3's.

I'm liking this game way more than Investigations 1. Waaaaaay more.

All this time I had to restrain myself and only listen to the first two tracks of that album (Great Revival and Kay's Theme). Felt good to finally be able listen to the whole thing. Like I said in the community thread, the Orchestra CDs are the best.

Just finished Middle Part 2 of Case 5.
My brain is melting, I'm probably going to have a heart attack from all these twists, and there's still at least 2 parts left D:

I actually refused to listen to the soundtrack on youtube before playing the game. I was determined to go into the game if it was ever translated as blind as possible. Soundtrack is kinda disappointing tbh :\

if yall haven't, you probably should give the orchestrated album a listen ;)

The Cornered theme is apparently found in the last track but oh god I like the in-game version so much more:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVA2z_zbWwA

I finished this, BTW. I liked it a lot more than AAI1 but I wasn't all that invested in the last case.
The BIG REVEAL, while competently plotted, didn't interest me much. I suppose I prefer when the final case is more personal for the protagonist. The fourth case seemed more like the finale, honestly.

edit: Spoiler tagged, just in case.

This game's pursuit/cornered theme wasn't at all what I expected coming from Investigation's Lying Coldly which had something of a classier Edgeworth suiting vibe, I expected something similar here and instead got something more traditionally gamey sounding but in the best way.

Funny how my three favourite pursuit/cornered themes all come from the spinoff games (Both Investigation entries and the Layton crossover).

Yeah, that's why I only listened to the first two (from the Orchestra album) since they aren't new tracks.

Unless you mean the game's soundtrack? I love it, personally. Didn't touch it prior to playing, either, though.

I didn't like it at first either, outside of a few songs, but the soundtrack grew on my by the end.

I'm enjoying the soundtrack it's just that I preferred the music from AAI. Although it has been a while since I've played AAI so perhaps this games soundtrack is actually better? I just don't really like the Pursuit/Cornered theme from this game. I really really dug the one from AAI and I was expecting something similar here.

Anyway, back to case 5 :D

I like it, but yeah, it's not as good as Lying Coldly. The rest of the "staple" tracks I love, though.

Yeah, the stakes felt much higher to me in case 4 even though the actual details of the case were probably less well laid out. Case 5 was a whole load of events that didn't advance Edgeworth's development much so I felt less invested.
