Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Ugh

the character was cartoony but worked well in the mystery plotline. Then everything spiked in cartooniness afterward.

holy shit it's hector salamanca!

10/10 LMAO.

Ace Ventura is the best movie of all time. Maybe it's the endless amount of laughter its provided throughout my life, and how much more fun it is to watch with my brother. Or that I can basically quote the entire movie, but....yeah. It's the best movie ever made, sorry OP.

First you hate Anchorman, which with all due respect, and remember I'm saying with all due respect, that opinion aint worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on

but now I find Ace Ventura hate. Not the sequel, mind you, but the original

CFK...what happened!? Where did things go wrong
I can sort of understand the OP's perspective.
Sometimes it's not fun to have to sit through two hours of a movie's star acting like a complete asshole with a mental dysfunction.

It's the same reason a lot of people don't enjoy Family Guy.

The scene where he demonstrates the soundproof door still drives me to tears every damn time.

yeah Jim Carrey is too over-the-top for me in this movie

like, I know that's why that's supposed to be funny, but he's 158 percent ON, all the time, and it mostly comes across as trying too hard.

As if OP wasn't already wrong enough, just reading this thread and seeing the GIF's has basically reduced me to tears of laugher in less than 5 minutes.

What OP should do in shame:

"Hi, I'm looking for Ray Finkle....and a clean pair of shorts."

Something about the way he delivers that line always gets me. Pet Detective is probably my favorite comedy ever to be honest.

2 was more or less the same so I'm not really understanding how people thought it was so much worse.

The great thing about Jim Carrey is he doesn't even have to try hard.

Yes, thank you. Jim overdid it, and his persona got old quick.

I understand the movie has its audience though.

why does everyone hate the second one? its great, I always laugh at the slinky part in the beginning and the hippo scene is classic

smh everyone :p
I saw the second one before I saw the first one. I love it more because it's so silly. Didn't enjoy the first as much.

Shakaka!

1 was great, 2 was awful. They are very similar like you said. 1 had a better setting and supporting cast IMO. Also 2 had a different writer and director.

It's interesting, I only ever hear quotes from the sequel in real life (which is almost never). First time in years I heard a quote by someone who was driving a few of us from a bar say 'Like a glove' after parking. It was fun.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with you OP, Carrey's early shtick is either grating or laughably silly. I know a few who hate it. Makes his performances all the more remarkable in such works as Eternal Sunshine.

What an obnoxious character and unfunny movie.

Another one of those cases where stuff is much worse than you remember.
Don't ever watch any Jerry Lewis movies, then.

I don't understand the hate of the second one either, it has far more many memorable moments to me than the first, both are hilarious though.

I fucking love the first movie.
A classic.

Second one had tons of laughs, but wasn't nearly as quotable or memorable.

The second one is really bad now. I mean there are like 3 scenes that were funny when you were a kid and not bad now, but the gaps in laughs are pretty horrible

That's the reason I didn't like the sequel. A lot of the jokes felt recycled but the setting and supporting characters were inferior to the first in my view.

Watched it in the theaters when it came out: laughed my balls off.

Watched it a few years ago, high as hell: laughed my balls off again.

Carrey I felt was great in this. Still holds up today.

I still feel though Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I think that's what its called?) is his best movie, though. Shows he can do serious movies really well.
