[Action Button] Tim Rogers reviews Boku no Natsuyasumi

Almost every game journalist thinks they are funny and have this lackluster deadpan humor that sucks. Tim Rogers pulls it off though.

I looked at this 3 hours ago. It's still going. Not sure if this is looping or if this is a 4+ hour review of an obscure 22-year-old Playstation game that substitutes as some sort of Tim Rogers autobiography, cause he's talking about burrowing some treasure in the sand when he was a kid with Raheed.

His Cyberpunk 2077 review was done in a choose your own adventure style and I think all of the videos together clock in at around ten hours.

I'm still not convinced Tim Rogers' reviews aren't simply elaborate meditative performance pieces operating on some kind of thetan level I haven't achieved yet. His Doom review was borderline surreal existentialism occasionally interjected by the word "Doom".

I bought Shin-Chan Summer Vacation and you get a very similar experience, but the license deal with Shin-Chan sorta kills it. I don't have those awe child like moments with Shin-Chan. It feels odd catching bugs because he doesn't make some disgusted comment about everything.

The title means "my summer vacation" right?

I like Tim Rogers but I also find him intolerable. His FF7 translation videos were epic. His longform videos are basically unwatchable for me. He's a pretentious piece of shit. Love him though.

You're damn right I'm going to listen to a man talk about a video game I will never, ever play for 6+ hours. You go Tim.

I respect the man and his work ethic and flavor, and I'm happy he has a fan base who enjoys what he does. I, for the life of me, can't stand him, but

Same, 10 min in of his DS review and i was ready to cut my veins with a piece of glass.

Dude is unfunny AF and doesn't know the meaning of the word concise.

I don't view him as a 'funny' reviewer. I am a fan of good writing and he checks those boxes for me. It helps that he is often humorous, but the meat of the appeal is in how he expresses his opinions and the narrative webs he lays out to expound upon those opinions.

Having a unique take on things, especially when they involve Japan or Japanese culture, is a rarity in the gaming world. I feel like most reviewers just complain when games don't get translated into English. Tim learned Japanese and lived in Japan instead of complaining. He played those games. And not only that, he also learned the context in which those games are revered and celebrated.

I get that verbose expounding on minor Japanese culture points is not interesting to the masses. I'm just grateful there are enough people out there who do enjoy his musings to allow him to continue to do the work. There is no other person in gaming that I would drop everything I'm doing just to watch / read their work. His takes are truly and uniquely his own.

I get a kick out of these...and I usually hate the long format.

Its the ridiculousness of Roger's strained prose that cracks me up.

You know for a while I was really into this dude's quirky style. I stumbled upon this as it was streaming live the other day and I made it through all of 15 minutes before turning it off. I might be over it.

To be fair, concise isn't what he's trying to accomplish. The opposite really as he's trying to push the limits of long form gaming essays. He's a storyteller who weaves interpersonal stories in with gaming history in revels in going far off tangent. His reviews can be pretty hit or miss with me. This one is pretty great so far.
