Adam Sessler and his descent into madness (short video about E3 stress)

also idk why people immediatly took offense to the cocaine/health comments or whatever. I know Sessler's persona so I assume he's not that type of guy nor that he would work under risky health conditions but dude how could you not worry or associate things when you see attitudes like this:

Sessler is at fucking mach speed 24/7, ive never seen him do something laid back. Dude just shouldnt work E3 or something, as much as I appreciate the coverage. He's gonna pop a vein.

That's dedication right there. The man is passionate and enjoys his work to the point of exhaustion and all to our benefit. Respect. But don't do it again, please. That last video was really worrisome.

I had to stay awake for like 40 hours once, it was horrible. Everything started to seem unreal at one point and I started falling asleep for a few seconds here and there. On the other hand, I slept for 18 hours straight after that and it felt exceptionally good after waking up.

Again, I just meant staying awake for 4 days playing games compared to staying awake in an environment like E3 would, theoretically, be easy.

Why did you have to stay awake for 40 hours, though?

But specifically, regarding Adam Sessler, he's always been sort of eccentric like this. It was more extreme at E3, but I just assumed that was because he'd been working nonstop for a few days. I'm not very familiar with his works though.

One of the interviews he did with the watch dogs developer, he looked extremely stressed. Was speaking really fast, face was turning red, etc. Legit looked like he was sweating.

Probably just a combination of stress and dehydration to be honest, the show floor gets quite hot especially when you are walking around all day. It can take a toll on you. Gotta remember to grab a water every few hours. From the videos he's still forming coherent thoughts so I don't know why people thought drugs were involved.

I almost made a thread on gaf about him during E3... it was kind of disturbing to witness.

Again: this is something to appreciate but not celebrate. Dude shouldnt do this again nor put himself under these conditions.

I think part of it is that he just took too much of it onto himself. He should have atleast let Tara do some of the interviews, or Max. I think its partly because hes the Boss over at Rev3 game division now so he takes allot of pride in the work they do. Sadly it also means hes probably taking too much of the responsibility on without relying on the others as much as he should.

Staying awake for 4 days isn't that big of a deal, but dealing with that many people, impressions, in a high stress environment, and in front of a camera would make it an extreme thing.

It depends on the person, really. If I stay up for longer than say, 30 hours, I start feeling really, really sick. Heart starts racing, my head starts aching and so on. And that's just sitting around relaxing in my house.

I can't imagine what it would be like with having to work on top of that.

Looks like he really worked himself to the bone. That's unhealthy, dammit. Don't just use up your body like it's some damn popsicle.

Oh well. Hope he gets to recover in peace for a bit before throwing himself at the next big thing.

Why did you have to stay awake for 40 hours, though?

Sort of a live action roleplaying game. There was a big field event which lasted for an entire day and the following night, while I had to go home on a bus the next afternoon. So I got up at 6 AM, lit up the campfire, prepared breakfast, went to the event and didn't get any sleep until I was home at like 8 PM of the following day.

He seemed exhausted near the end.

You aren't in your 20's! Thanks for the great coverage though.

How many things are this big? E3 is the biggest game expo, it's once a year, and this was one of the most important E3s in many years.

Yeah he busted his ass. Why wouldn't he?

dude is editor in chief and executive producer, I'm sure he is doing way more than just interviews. people saying his job is easy are the same people who think teaching is a cakewalk.

Games journalist complains about talking and playing video games for three days.

Many would kill for that job.

Don't stoop to Youtube levels of assessment. Many might want his job, but very few could pull it off, let alone his feat at E3. You have to maintain a certain amount of energy and charisma that many journalists/reporters simply do not have.

They really didn't have to do this, and yet even after the video people make stupid comments. Let's try and appreciate the fact that he was questioning people in order for us to learn more about our anticipated games.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he was hopped up on coke. He seems like much more of a spazz than I remember from years ago. I mean...the fucking hands and incoherence. The one interview I watched with him this E3 was hard to watch. I'm glad it's not a disease, but I wouldn't poo-poo the coke theory. If you've worked in the entertainment industry, you'll know it's like the drug of choice. PEACE.

I seriously can't believe the people in this thread who are downplaying the hardwork and stress of Adam's E3 work. It's not just "chatting about video games", c'mon.

Have you ever been to E3? It's a very stressful environment. You've got music blaring at you from all directions; long-ass lines, inconsistent lighting, and a horde of people trying to get in line for something or just taking up space.

Add the work element to it. Doing forty interviews in 3 days means you're doing about 13 interviews a day, definitely more than 1 / hr. You've got to get set up, get in touch with the people you're interviewing, adjust your schedule to handle inevitable delays, light / sound checks ON TOP of needing to be focused on the person you're interviewing. That doesn't even cover the aftershow smoozing and boozing. I couldn't imagine going there as a reporter and trying to cover everything. Nasty nasty stuff.

If anyone follows him on Twitter he also was in a disgusting hotel room with no electricity or hot water. That combined with all of his E3 coverage did him in. His wife even took over his account to because it was the only way they could communicate.

Wasn't e3 scaled back for a couple years? It seems like it beats the hell out of anybody covering it.

A lot of these big events will beat the hell out of you. My first event was PAX Prime 2008, and by the end of the third day, I was barely able to stand.

I learned from that and now do a lot of year-round exercise to keep myself in enough shape to make it through the likes of San Diego Comic Con/PAX/etc. I think as some of the other folks noted, too, Sess might have had some outside issues that affected him this year, but it's really, really easy to exhaust yourself at a big event like this.

"Adam Sessler needs more help." /Basketball reference.

Seriously though, I bet he wishes he could have plucked Morgan off the Xbox E3 set to help him do those sit down interviews. Hell, even Anthony Carboni was on the Sony E3 production all week. (I didn't realize he officially worked for them too. The rest of the Rev3Games staff was either on the floor getting info and conducting other interviews.

The multi-tasking demands of not trying to step on corporate toes while asking the "hard-hitting" questions at the same time can be rigorous.

He talked a lot at a conference for video games. Yeah stressful, but he should do my job for a week. He'd hang himself in a closet by the end of it.

What did he do? List and justify each. I want to know why it is you and others are such experts about what other people did at a place you weren't at, doing a job you have no experience doing.

Thanks.

Exactly. There's some serious stress in that, and Adam usually handles it in stride, but E3 is a major grind.

This part was amazing.

I ignored The Division, but it looks cool. Also, Sess sounds terrible. Slurred and slowed speech. o_O
