Adderall and School, Have You Used It?

I think I've already mentioned this in the GAFitness thread, but I use Aderall fairly regularly. I was diagnosed as being ADHD when I was younger, therefore I do legitimately have a prescription for it. However, I wouldn't consider my condition very serious, and quite frankly I only take it for two reasons (on an as-needed-basis):

1). Additional Energy For Workouts
2). Wanting To Pull an All-Nighter For Studying/Paper Writing

That being said, methamphetamines are incredible. There's a reason why they're banned in most professional sports. For example, I took one pill (Aderall XR) Monday morning at 7 a.m before going to the gym. When I got home - I knew I had to study for an Exam today (Tuesday at 8.am). I was able to study all through last night - with strictly the drug and a bit of food in my system. This morning I was fucking wired. I'm fairly confident that even on no sleep - having stayed awake for over 24+ hours, I aced the test easily.

Methamphetamine also acts as an appetite suppressor. Therefore, if you're attempting to lose weight or shed a few pounds it's rather beneficial. Granted the drug will lose it's effectiveness on people over time. Particularly as you get older. There's also some other unfortunate side effects (occasionally) such as acne. Likewise, some people report Alopecia. In fact, I think it was only recently added to the side-effects listing. However, that may also be a result of poor nutrition from people not eating properly.

Ultimately I highly recommend Aderall (or any methamphetamine) if you're looking to gain an edge in academics or fitness.

People are stupid. I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid and first began taking Ritalin then doctors had me on Adderall all the way through Middle and High School. It works but I couldn't wait to get off of it. It destroys your (at least mine) appetite. Who the fuck takes drugs to study?
I loved the appetite suppression side effect. I dropped 20 pounds without trying.

What if a guy who is barely literate takes it and then it makes him a doctor? I think this drug that gives you good grades should be banned for that reason.

I agree with this. There has been some article about the usage of these types of stimulants, but this type of drug will affect each person different.

Edit: myself and the people I know who have prescriptions, only take it when required.

Uhhhh, it just helps you focus more when you study. It doesn't give you the answers.

Unless this is sarcasm - it does not work that way. For most people, methamphetamine helps enhance your cognitive functioning (focus / concentration) and provide energy. However, it's not going to increase your overall intellect.

Indeed. Anyone interested in trying these drugs out needs to do so very carefully.

Used speed to pass my engineering finals, wrote the paper in a 48 hour marathon. Can't remember what I wrote, though. Began using tiny amounts regularly as a hahaha coffee substitute. Noticed discoloration of urine-cue kidney infection months later.

Amphetamines play havoc with the kidneys. Can cause all out renal failure or exacerbate existing conditions. It could take you out pretty quick if you let it. Google it. Moderation is the key, and also something I fail at. Be careful.

Yes I have. I try to stick mainly to just coffee, but sometimes workloads can get very overwhleming. I saw a thing about lower schools giving their students adderall and definitely think that's dumb though.

This. Kind of.

I forgot to mention in my post that during my Senior year of high school, I was taking any ADD meds I could get my hands on before school - man oh man do Jesuit schools suck. I had a weightlifting class, and the difference in performance when on and off the pill was pretty spectacular. I could do as many clap push ups on Vyvanse than I could regular push ups off the drug. I front squatted 30 pounds more when on it, jumping from 150-180 within a day or two. But, here lies the problem...

One day on the squat rack, I was foolishly going for even more weight, and I hadn't slept or eaten in at least 40 hours. Almost instantly upon lifting the bar, I completely blacked out and fell to the ground and dropped the bar. Somewhat of a wake up call for me, and that is really the only time I've ever blacked out like that. So yeah, if you're working out on ADD meds, make sure you have eaten, you had a good night sleep, and you are hydrated.

You should not be working out when taking an amphetamine dude. Bad reason to take one.

Based on both my old roommate (recent med school grad) and my gf (currently in med school), everyone takes it. My gf has managed to stay clean of it, but found it really hard to stay competitive in the class. Roommate also managed to stay clear it of for the most part, but he wasn't as opposed to occasional drug use and tried it a couple of times during the later parts of med school and said it was obscene how much it helped improve the ability to focus and study.

He also had one classmate who was pretty much addicted to it, and took 3x the regular dosing to study. Dude was wired all the time and aced his first two years and the boards (260+ in step 1). That said, it couldn't cover up the fact that he was socially dumb as shit and had no interpersonal skills necessary to become a doctor. Basically ruined all his work the first two years by having horrible rotations. Think he managed to squeak into an IM residency, but far off from what he was hoping to do.

I understand why people use it, but I would never do it. It'd just become a crutch for me to abuse. I was just happy to be able to hang with most of those students.

It's not a magically drug that contains every known medical fact. I am sure more then half of the people who earn thier md, do have been on a regular dosage.

It is very easy to abuse and I certainly know people that do it, but for the hell that is constant studying during say finals week it is very helpful.

Never used it, and don't plan on it. I also haven't yet had to pull any all-nighters. I just prepare for exams and stuff a week in advance by going over some notes.

Yes, tried it for a semester and it didn't help at all. It just made me agitated and sent my mind spinning at 100 miles an hour. I just wound up getting really distracted and anxious, it didn't help me focus.

Basically this right here. They can help in small doses, at least for me. I'm naturally an anxious person, though.

I didn't need it.

I naturally wake up between 6:30 and 7:30am everyday without the aid of an alarm clock regardless of what time I went to bed the previous night. I can go about a week with 2-4 hours of sleep without feeling the effects of it, and I never need caffeine or energy drinks to stay wide awake.

I light have nedred it on thIs programme. Also world have been good for Sociology and Law becquerel massive texts and papers, like 30 pages for the final bachelor essay. But I got through that. But now I basically flunked but I stayed up til 10 sometimes even, ate to study for me. Only missed 1 exam and might not take exit semester. Also I don't think this is comparable to caffeine... Also very hard to get here, docs don't just prescribe shit like in the US lol

I tried it a few times when I was a student but it didn't really work on me very effectively. On one occasion I ended up spacing out and playing Civilization IV all night instead of studying, mind you I played th game very attentively. It basically made me concentrate very heavily on something nearby at the time and that never happened to be school work.

Coffee on the other hand is pure magic and is what seriously got me through school.

Yea this too. This is really the best, if you pull an all nightdress the day before it shows that you don't really know shit

I've been prescribed it and I'm trying to figure out correct dosages, basically. They moved me to 20 mg XR and it doesn't really feel like it's working as well as when I was on 10 mg IR. I have a bottle of 20 mg IR tabs, too, so I'm going to take half of one soon so I can finish the work day and be prepared for studying tonight.

I have a lot of reasons to disagree with this, but the biggest issue is this. It's a roller coaster ride, and eventually you need to come down... The "good" effects are temporary. Developing good study/workout habits takes time and effort. Aderall isn't a substitute for building good habits, its only a substitute for motivation. If you had a shitty attention span and zero motivation before you take it, you're right back were you started once the drugs are out of your system. You're actually a lot worse off coming down. Eventually you'll need to up the dose too to get the same effects, which means worse withdraw symptoms (which can be fucking terrible and I'd know).

Recommending this for weight loss or workout purposes is just flatout terrible

let's all remember this is meth in pill form.

As an ADDer, I find Adderall too harsh of a drug.

Ritalin has a more precise effect on concentration, whereas Adderall also has an adrenaline rush that's completely irrelevant to the treatment of ADD. I also prefer Ritalin because it clears out of your body completely within 6 hours. Adderall takes nearly 2 days to completely exit.

I've been on it since age 8. Changed my life, and I'm a life long case (insanely impulsive, moody, inattentive without it)

I've never been a part of dorm life in college, but whenever I visit my friends a few weeks prior to finals or midterms, I constantly hear them mention using Adderall as a means to write papers and prepare for exams.

I personally feel like it's cheating, but I can understand it's uses for someone who's not prescribed it.

Have you used and how do you feel about it's use on college campuses?

Cheating? How so?

been on Ritalin for about 6 years now and it really has helped me. sometimes I have classes that are 5 hours long and impossible to go to without Ritalin. I tend to get really into whatever im doing for about 20 minutes then I jump to something else and get really into that. With Ritalin I can focus on one thing and get my shit done. I dont like to take it too often though because sometimes it can really drain you.

Yep, it's over prescribed and ADD is diagnosed so much because it works for pretty much everyone. It's a powerful stimulant. No different than speed (amphetamine). It will kick your adrenaline up, pick up your mood, and make it easier to stay focused and "into" something where your attention would otherwise drift.

But people who have taken it for a while say it makes it even harder to function normally when you aren't on it. Even if you aren't physically addicted you need to keep taking it to keep doing well in school or at work.

It's not a bad thing - some people really need it and are farther out on the ADHD spectrum. And if you use it to get through exams or writing papers and don't need it after that that's probably fine too. But don't underestimate it as a powerful drug.

I've used it on occasion. I don't think it's cheating. If you don't know your shit or you're stupid, the drug really won't help you all that much. Ultimately, YOU are responsible for creating good content/testing well/etc.

@bjb
Jeez, you use it as a pre-workout? Why don't you just take another supplement like creatine monohydrate or a hybrid product in the same vein?

You're using a substance to enhance your learning ability.

The people with prescriptions are doing the same thing...

Were British soldiers and American pilots cheating at war by using it?

The goal of school is to learn. You can't compare it to a competitive sport.

Also, this. Your success in school does not make others fail (don't cite courses with curves... curves are generous as fuck in nature and there's a case to be made for their nonexistence). If you win, others do not lose. Sports are a different story.

I've been skinny my whole life. And I enjoy eating. I've been off of it for years now and I'm still skinny. It was just annoying to have food and not want to eat it.

I know a few people that have used Modafinil. It's prescribed for narcolepsy. Apparently it improves your focus a huge amount when studying. Anyone try that?
