For me the "once I get a better computer" pressure is always the issue for me with PC gaming, you dont have a fixed target, and over time this pressure can make me spend a fortune on hardware and you spend a lot of time tinkering. so I have wimped out of PC gaming for that reason. But that's just me..

Well, I guess it's down to the individual to set limits. Me personally, I could care less about maxing out graphics and getting absolutely perfect framerate and photorealistic textures.

I just want to be able to run some of the bigger games like The Forest or even AAA games like Future Soldier. Medium settings is my goal; if I can do high settings, that's just a plus

It is, only it's special, no DRM (none, zero, nada, zilch, etc), and it has fair prices (it matters if one lives in Europe, for example), good sales often too. Ya, no credit card or Paypal is problematic.

I moved to digital only long time ago already, it simply doesn't make sense to buy retail games anymore. The last one I bought was the Last Remnant (or HoMM5 CE, not sure). So, it was long ago, and digital copies would have been cheaper.
Then again, I'm no collector.

You are exactly right, 80-90% of PC sales are digital at this point.

Games are released at retail, but they are difficult to find, and significantly more expensive than their digital counterparts.

I've wanted to play a STALKER game for years. It was the interest in that series that drove to get Fallout 3.

I learned like 10 minutes ago that there's a whole series of STALKER games. I checked on Game Debate and their analysis was that I can't run Shadow of Chernobyl but I could run Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat at low to medium

So:
1) Which is the better of those two and why?
2) Would you agree with that assessment?

Now the annoying part is that on Reddit, someone said that if I can run Clear Sky, I should be able to run Chernobyl. What do you think? I really don't want to buy a highly anticipated game and then not even be able to enjoy it

Shadow of Chernobyl was the first, if you can run the others you should be able to run it.

Out of Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat COP is better. More, polished, less technical issues, no wierd faction mechanics. Shadow of chernobyl has the best atmosphere of all three though.

Yeah it's weird. Game Debate (which has been 100% accurate on what games I can run and the setitings I can run them) says my graphics card can't run SoC at all but run do the other two at low/medium. Of course I want to get the first one the most, but I'm nervous that I'll get it and it'll play like absolute crap.

So what did the other two add to the series? New areas, new weapons, new gameplay mechanics, etc.? If the Sale is good, I might just get all three but if I need to make a decision, I'd like to know

First I want to thank this community. Across various threads, GAFfers answered a lot of questions about Steam and PC gaming in general and pointed the best games and hidden gems. I had heard a lot of horror stories about NeoGaf before, but now that I'm a part of the GAF community, it's by the best forum I've ever been a part of. Personable, friendly, able to have actual discussion and conversations, generous. So thanks for that and I'm very happy to have joined the Gaf community

Pros:
- Competition results in amazing prices and sales
- A wide range of unique, inventive indie games and experiences that would be too risky to do attempt on consoles
- KB/M allows for tons of controls schemes and gameplay possibilities that aren't possible with a controller (I.e. reloading in Receiver, Surgeon Simulator, RTS controls)
- So awesome to be able being my games anywhere
- Alphas, betas, bundles, mods, etc. - so many cool aspects of PC gaming I've never experienced before.

Cons:
- My only real con and the reason why I didn't get involved with PC gaming earlier is the specs. What I love about consoles is the convienence. I don't have to worry about my CPU, my GPU, my Ram, being new parts, etc. Just put the disk in and play. But that's just me and once I got a better computer, that won't be an issue anymore

My favorite games so far have been Frozen Synapse, Limbo, and Vessel. And I'm finally playing Half Life 2. Getting in PC gaming was the best gaming decision I've ever made. I haven't touched my consoles in days,

Downloading and installing on steam/origin is just as easy as it is on consoles.

I'd argue it's even easier as it can be done automatically without having to start the update manually.

Yeah I've been a console game since 199-something, when I got a PS1. My PC gaming till now was flash games and freeware games (actually Facade was my first real freeware/indie game).

I never understood the "divide" between PC gamer and console gamer or even between console gamers. Each system has its pros and cons, its exclusives, etc. Neither is better than the other. I honestly can't stand PC Elistist comments and articles. Of course a crazy upgraded machine is going to have better performance than a console. That's just common sense. Doesn't mean the consoles are any worse

Like I said, I like consoles for the convienence and I guess the universal aspect of it. You know, that once you buy a console and TV, you're set. Every game will run. No tweaking is necessary. Plus every game is designed to work best with an universal control option aka a controller.

I'm not a graphics or performance whore. I could care less if cloud is perfectly rendered and you can't tell the difference between real life and the game screen. So I really never noticed or cared about stuff like textures or framerate or every other "problem" that PC gamers point out when they diminish console games. I'm a very easy gamer to please. If it's not broken and it's not a literal corridor, I'll enjoy it

I don't see 60FPS there which is EASILY the best "feature" of PC gaming. It makes everything what was "ok" before "great".

I can only play on high @60 fps 1080p and have no self control so I might spend more money on a higher end gpu, so instead I'll choose to play all my games on low @24-30 fps and maybe 720p with no AA and no AF instead.

I buy most of the big titles at retail on amazon, zavvi etc mainly because i don't want to download 8gb of data. You can usually pick up PC releases for about £25 at launch which makes it difficult for me to go for the console versions at £40.

If the game is steamworks i install it from the disk, let it patch if needed and then backup the install to an external drive as i tend to install/uninstall games frequently.

Games like Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite are vastly superior on PC, and this has been one of the best years in gaming for me in recent years so far.

I, like others, think you're doing a mistake buying on of those god-awful "gaming" laptops you've mentioned. You're much better off keeping the one you have, and building a resonably priced desktop. Even if you just want to play indies at low res/detailt.

(The laptop will probably melt after 6 months, or the battery will die).

If you must have portable gaming I would recommend you a console, maybe a Vita. Heresy in a PC thread maybe, but a Vita is cheap, has a decent indie library and is a much nicer piece of hardware than the laptops you're considering.

Miss the PC when it comes to shooter controls and high resolution. Not for anything else. Too much hassle. Oh the hassle I had when I was a PC gamer.... Remember when Counterstrike ran only in a small window on the Desktop for some reason. Took me hours to fix it. NEVER AGAIN !!

Back in 2000 I put Majora's Mask into my N64 and it was all like "PLEASE EXPANSION PAK". A dark omen for our future.

Except it looks awful because you're much closer to the screen typically. Otherwise yes, until intel release a new cpu range that destroys the previous ones and developers don't bother optimising.

Something I think more people ought to be aware of - consoles get a lot more optimisation and for a lot longer. If you want to keep that cushy master PC gaming experience up throughout the lifespan of next-gen, you'll need to upgrade at least your GPU a few times and most likely everything once during the 8 or so years. Probably at year 5 or so. That's not a lot to some but some people might be going in with different expectations (on performance - if you care about a good fps...which is why I assume people go with high end PCs mostly).

With PC gaming, it can be amazing but it can also be super frustrating. That kind of divide between greatness and annoyance does not exist on consoles. Most games do not work amazingly well on consoles (graphics, fps) but they always work, you never have to worry about stuff like that.

Just recently Sleeping Dogs and Spec Ops would not recognize my 360 wired controller, despite perfectly working in every other game, i had to dig through forums and old posts and found out that others had a similar problem. NBA 2k13 has stopped wanting to boot, so i had to go mess with the compatibility. Most of these issues are easily solved by a google search but it is still annoying how some games require you to mess around just to get them to function properly. Not all games have issues but some do and it is annoying having to deal with it.

My other issue is that cheating is still rampant in particularly FPS, it is so easy to find hacks that work for CS, Call of Duty, Battlefield and the like, maphacks are a dime a dozen for games like StarCraft 2. If it takes me 5 minutes to find these, then surely anyone can find them. So i tend to play these games on the consoles, because i see far less of that, the worst i see are just weird glitches over there.

I have a decent PC, but I still prefer console gaming for a few reasons.
I don't like sitting so close to a monitor
I suck with keyboard and mouse controls
Messing with graphics settings irritates me more than it should.
A lot of console ports are crap. Added resolution really brings out flaws in games that were intended to be played at 720p. You see a lot of uneven asset quality, etc, that 720p would mask.
Online competition is so stiff. I get instantly wrecked in just about every online PC game while I can hold my own on consoles.

With all that said, I still enjoy my gaming PC, but my consoles come first.

I'm really not that interested in building a PC myself. I know it's probably not that hard but it would give me better peace of mind knowing it's not going to BSOD because I fucked something up.

The limit of my budget is £750

And, I know I shall look like a pleb, I've been seriously considering an Alienware X51. I know it's £100 more expensive than it really ought to be, but the alternative is a custom ordered thing that will take ages to arrive and might save me £80. There's some pre-built things on amazon that look cheap but the reviews are very mixed, people reporting that the pc wasn't put together properly, there was a problem with the motherboard, etc, etc.
Prebuilt on Amazon seems the cheapest and fastest but also the riskiest.
Custom built...I'd need some solid specs that are compatible, but the thing would take the better part of a month to arrive anyway.
Getting the Alienware will burn my wallet, but at least I won't have any nasty surprises when it arrives, and it will arrive sooner than a custom built...

I can't advise you on buying pre-built, but I can't stress enough just how easy it can be to build a pc. I was really worried when I built my first 3 years ago but I had to for budget reasons - I'd completely recommend it, there's a lot of great help here on GAF on that front too.

Tedious, but still remarkable simple.

Ironically, it's not. I don't have a credit card or paypal and rely on Steam Wallet Cards. I only have $38 dollars to spend during the Sale. The games I have now have mostly been from generous GAFfers, giveaways, and swapping/trading on Reddit

I miss the days of building and playing PC games. I remember my first system build and thought 3Dfx Voodoo 2's running SLI was the best thing in the world. Upgraded pretty frequently after that until I got married and had kids. Now I've turned to portable systems for gaming, but really miss the days of PC gaming.

I've been looking for something more mobile like a laptop, but really don't have the finances to pull that off. Ideally a gaming tablet like a Surface Pro or Razer Edge would be a dream.

Just don't neglect console gaming and you've got the best of both worlds! Neither one is the "best". As a gamer you owe it to yourself to have as many options available to yourself as possible, that means being able to play as many games as possible.

PC gaming has pros and cons as any other platform. However the cons means missing some incredible games if you're a PC only gamer. And the pros, which come from customization of every piece of hardware, do come at a higher price than consoles.

However, PC is where all the legacy consoles end up being in emulated form, so it's the most viable way to enjoy games from consoles that ceased production long time ago.

Not to mention that if you have a PC, it's not exclusive to gaming. You have a whole world beyond it.

The best PC exclusive I've played this year, so far, is Rogue Legacy.

At least in 2012 we got some awesome PC-exclusive shooters that I enjoyed in Hawken and Planetside 2.

- KB/M allows for tons of controls schemes and gameplay possibilities that aren't possible with a controller (I.e. reloading in Receiver, Surgeon Simulator, RTS controls)

I feel many people fail to see this, but kb/m combo is really ad incredible controller combo.
Think also of the interaction in games like Penumbra/Amnesia, or the body stance control of Arma3 (and leaning of course too), the drag&drop inventories.

I built my own gaming PC earlier this year and my experience was similar to the OP. PC-GAF was (and still is) a great help when it came to researching parts and getting into the ecosystem. I have the rig hooked up to a TV, playing games from a couch with a wireless 360 controller and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results.

I can't advise you on buying pre-built, but I can't stress enough just how easy it can be to build a pc. I was really worried when I built my first 3 years ago but I had to for budget reasons - I'd completely recommend it, there's a lot of great help here on GAF on that front too.

Yep. I did it for the first time this year and it was pretty much smooth sailing (with the help of some Youtube videos and such). Not hard at all and I found that understanding it all and pulling it off to be a rewarding experience too.

Console for life! I like to sit on my couch and use a actual controller. Sure you could do this with a PC, but it's much more of a hassle. I really despise mouse and keyboard controls!
