• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

After 7 years, I've finally broken free of trophy/cheevo dependency!

I'm still trying to break the cycle. My backlog is huge but trophies. I need to finish off two plats I'm working on but I don't even enjoy it.

I failed 52 games because of it.

Never cared for them in the first place. A digital number that signifies how much of a "gamer" you are is ridiculous.

I never bought into it in the first place.

I always considered it a cheap/easy way for developers and publishers to enhance the value of their title via poor gameplay extension and repetition (sure you can beat the game in 8 hours but it might take another 100 to get all the trophies/achievements) but also by massaging the gamer's egos via a meaningless sense of accomplishment.

I hate achievements, especially in Steam when you finish a game and a "CONGRATULATIONS GAME OVER" achievement pops up before the ending sequence has even started. Way to spoil the ending assholes.

I enjoy getting trophies/achievements. Acquiring the vast majority of trophies in a game gives me a nice feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. It's a little something to show for all the time and effort I put into playing a game.

The only problem is I can't properly enjoy Wii U games due to the lack of trophies. I really hope the NX has them.

Seems like most games have one or two trophies that fall neatly into the "Keep playing the game about 20+ hours past the point is was remotely fun anymore" category. I don't care about any trophy other than getting platinum, and only if it's a game I really like. Even then I seem to fall into a pattern of getting about 80% to 90% before running out of enthusiasm.

Too many games give you a trophy for absolutely nothing now, so it sorta lost it's purpose IMHO.

I've never understood why anyone cares about these things. They're utterly meaningless. I always thought that they should come with reward points that add up to let you buy more games, and then it would make sense to try for them.

Alot of hate or trophies here. Personally I really enjoy the challenge of chasing trophies and find it really satisfying to get that elusive platinum. However I've had a vita/ps3/4 as my main systems for about 6 years and only have 11 platinums so I guess I don't care about them as much as op.. If I get bored doing trophies I just give up with the mentality that I'll finish it up eventually when I feel like playing that particular game again - got the sleeping dogs platinum recently, started playing it whenever it came out on plus :) I find it disappointing when games have rubbish trophies too but I will still play them if there good - last of us is one example of this.

Tldr: trophies are fun until you force yourself to play a game your bored of or don't like for them.

These days just beating a game is an achievement for me. I dont have time for time consuming achievements. I just play games for fun.

That said I understand that these achievements can add some reply value to a lot of games. I wish i had time for that.

Welcome back!

I was stuck just like you just on the 360 side. With over 110k when the new generation arrived I switched over to PS4. All of my friends jumped sides except the ones who are still hooked on the cheevo drug.
Finally I play games for fun instead of hunting down meaningless points. Only Platinum I got is Bloodborne, but hey, GOTG ffs!

Congrats on kicking your addiction.
I was once same as you, chasing achievements, playing games I hate just for an easy 1000G, playing games with a walkthrough in hand, just following steps without an ounce of enjoyment, skipping good games because they take too long to complete...
I have reached 157K in a bit more than three years, until I finally realized that I was missing the point of gaming, and decided to go cold turkey. So in the spring of 2013, with the next gen imminent, I dedicated the rest of the year to get caught up on all great games I missed.

Then I bought a PS4, and the very first thing I have done was turn off trophy notifications. And I never turned them back on, I've played many games since just the way I wanted.
I have never checked trophies, I don't know requirements for any of the games, and the only thing I know is the number 14 in the top right corner of my screen, but I don't care even the slightest to click on it and see what it contains.

And I've never felt so liberated when gaming as in the past two years.

Wow man. I would never ever do that to myself - even if I were actually into doing trophies (I don't and never will). If i ever triggered one... I just go "neat!" and go on my merry way.

Same with you, I turn off trophy/achievement notifications if they allow it, I don't want things that adds additional distraction on the screen, PC, console or handheld.

Congrats to you guys for just enjoying the game.

I don't mind clearing good achievements in good games. I wouldn't play a bad game for them, and I ignore anything that is just crazy grinding, especially in multiplayer games.

No, The Darkness, I will not devote the next three months to playing your tacked-on, garbage multi. I couldn't even if I wanted to. Within a week of release, no one was playing it outside of achievement hunters on forums.

I'm addict to Trophies but I can easily select what game I would like to Platinum and which one I'll finish the story without really looking for trophies. Still, good job for controlling your addiction.

The fact that Cheevos The Movie didn't get funded shows that few people actually care.

I've started playing more games on PC where the only achievement system is the one on Steam which is easily hackable. No need to care about them any more.
