Air Jordan 11 Retros released - fights break out

LOL jesus christ

you'd think by now they'd just sell them online after all of these incidents

Or at least implement some kind of preorder system to alleviate the huge rush all at once.

Say what you will about Gamestop, but they had a police officer there and were incredibly strict about maintaining a line during the launch of the PS4 in my town. That's how this should be done, there's no reason a store should have an absolute stampede of morons aiming for a single product. I can't imagine these videos of stampedes at Walmart or Foot Locker being encouraging for consumers who want to shop there around this time of year. The current way of doing things benefits no one.

Yep, 3's are my faves too. Got the TBs when they released back in 2011, and then the White/Cement 88s that came out earlier this year.

Damn, I'm jealous - I only own the Fire Reds, and they've only been worn once - only when the weather is good.

After the True Blues, the White Cements are my second favs so I'm REALLY jealous.

A lot of stores do raffles before release where you get a ticket for your size if you win the raffle. Seems to keep a lot of the trouble down. There will always be dumb stores and dumb people, though.

My sister works at Foot Locker and told me how some shady guy paid his way past the entire line with cash and bought a pair of the Gamma Blues for his 4 year old son all in cash. She said he carried his money in a clip like a drug dealer and very clearly had a glock in the back of his pants.

Moral of the story: don't fuck with the people who buy these things.
I bet you he wouldn't pull that at the glock store when the new glocks come out.

Exactly. Scares the shit out of me, honestly, and I'm not alone from talking to friends. I have no interest in being a part of that, and I really wanted these shoes.

And from what I've read, there wasn't even much hype for these particular versions of the 11s. I can't imagine the carnage when they drop the new Space Jams or Breds...

a lot of the hype is getting a hype sneaker for notsohype prices. nobody does this for balenciaga/raf simons and some (but not all) of those colorways are gone in hours/days online.

Notsohype prices?

Of course you and I know there are more expensive shoes out there. But to a kid growing up in an urban culture where Jordans are a statement, $190 for a pair of sneakers is fucking ballin'.

What's the big deal with these shoes? Why are people willing to get into fights over these?

Supply is much lower than demand.

"Buy why not just make more?" you're probably thinking.

Because the limited supply is effectively what fuels the demand. People want them because they're rare. If Nike was pumping these out in large quantities, they'd lose their appeal to the collectors that seek these shoes out.

Personally, I don't get it anymore. I'm probably just too old - I remember all the fights and stabbings over the original Air Jordans back in the 90s (when I was young enough to actually want some). But limited supply plus huge demand (not to mention a price that doesn't really reflect the demand) guarantees that people are going to get into fights over them.

Yet you still have this:

Not to mention probably half of the people who pick these up day one are going straight to ebay to sell them for 4x as much.

^that's a symptom of limited availability and release hype... re: the balenciaga shit I mentioned before, they were gone in a day or so everywhere online, and ebay resellers are sitting on them at $900 (msrp of $550 or so) and nobody is really biting. probably because it's assumed they will make more next year. not really a case with jordans, once they're gone that's it.

well that's what I mean. everyone has the internet now, we can see how much the louboutins/etc on your favorite rapper are, and online sales means there isn't a 'wall' outside of cost. nike really doesn't have a lux pull nor are they targeting that demographic, so they kinda sit in the middle between your standard $80 sneaker and your $500+ luxe sneaker.

Nike wants it this way. Foot Locker (and all these other shoe stores) are pretty much at Nike's mercy when it comes to the way their shoes are released.

The best advertisement/hype they can get for these big releases is that chaos breaks out. Or stories like that drug dealer pay-jumping the line.

I have over 40 pairs of sneakers. And I'm passed that phase of making lines for sneakers.. but this is sad... over a pair of sneakers that was made for under 5 dollars and being sold for 200+ and using B grade materials. Quality is taken a huge dip in Jordan's that they are not buyable anymore

Say that again, and you won't be making it back to your car alive homey.

What's so special about Jordans though?

Seriously I've seen better shoes at Kmart... Its insanely how much a logo changes somethings worth.

They're the Beats by Dre of shoes, only with Apple fan diehardness and demographics that align with ghetto people (as well as many others of course). This leads to a lot of fights.

Those are the first basketball sneaker that I didn't think was overly tacky in sometime.

But that with that price and the probable rarity in Southern Ontario means that I'll stick to my crappy sneakers for now.

I never understand why people can be so stupid. Risking your life over some damn sneakers. I got pissed off at my nephew earlier after learning that he went down to the store to stand in line for the sneakers specifically after I told him not to, in large part due to the risk associated. Something bad can happen on line, something bad can happen to him as he's attempting to go home with them, any number of things can go wrong.

He's in a different state, but after I found out from his mother that he went down there, I canceled the credit card that he planned on using to buy the sneakers with. I gave him the card for more important things, not for a stupid pair of sneakers.

Nothing is special about jordans, it's just a status symbol like louis vitton, channel, etc..

Actually from a design standpoint, they did revolutionize sneakers.
They were the first to add elephant print, suede, nubuck, durabuck, 3M, Carbon fiber to their line of Basketball shoes.

Before them, all Sneakers were pretty much just plain all white or black with the companies logo attached.

Tell me more about these "ghetto people," as you say.

I'm the same way. I'm done with lines, done with the stupid games Footlocker, Nike, and JB play. If I can't cop online from eastbay, or on ebay for not rape prices, I just let em go. Too old for all that crap. The only industry that gets unquestionable support from its customers and we're still treated like shit.

The Nike Air really does it for me :p

Ha ha! This is extremely fucking pathetic.

It really and truly is. Nobody is saying that you can't like and want a pair of sneakers, but so much that you're willing to risk getting hurt, robbed or killed over it? Wait it out, you can fucking get them later if you really want them so bad.

A big part of it is simply showing off to other people that you bought a new and expensive pair of sneakers.

welcome to the world of J's

Problem is, unlike games for example, is that these sneakers sell out fast and are almost never restocked. Only other ways to get them is ebay, wait years for a re-release,
or steal them
. I don't agree with the obsession of these kicks either, but being a game hobbyist I can kinda sorta relate to the obsession.

I will never understand the shoe/kicks culture.

That's okay. Most people don't understand our gaming culture either.
