Airsoft |OT| Like paintballing but with more realistic guns

Yeah, the biggest BS i've heard is "My vest would stop that bullet."

Yea *smack*

We had a guy who had one of those fake flak jackets and he literally couldn't feel anything but denied it. So during down time we were hanging out, one of the guys walked 10 feet away and just acted like he was test firing, then turned and dumbed about 25 rounds into the back of this guys flak jacket... he never felt a single hit while we just were sitting around the area watching. So yea we confronted his ass and made sure he never brought that jacket back.

Man, I'd love to get in on this but I'm not sure I need yet another expensive hobby.

Plus, I'm not sure where I'd go as a novice player. I have no experience with weapons apart from 2 or 3 games of paintball and a bit of plinking in my teenage years.

It can be very affordable. Where about do you live?

Austria

I did some research and found several airsoft clubs in town, I guess I'll give it a try next year in spring.

I want to buy a gun and do some target practice by myself for a bit before joining a club tho.

Considering the costs of the gas stuff, I'm thinking AEG is the way to go. Any particular manufacturers you could recommend? I'm looking for an assault rifle at $200 or less.

What's got me a bit worried is that nobody wears full face protection in any of the german/austrian airsoft videos on youtube or on any of the club homepages.

I don't really want to be the only guy with a mask, but I'd really hate it if I lost a tooth.

Don't worry about the face mask thing. Some people don't wear one because they think its cooler looking, they change their minds after taking a bb to the lip. However it's considered bad form to intentionally go for head shots. Unless, of course, that's the only body part showing.

As for an AEG, it depends on what you want stylistically. The M4 is dull, but it has the most options out there. And you can personalize it. I would go for an G&G Combat Machine M4. Dboys can be hit or miss sometimes.

Airsoft can cost more than a real gun. Is that true?

Only if you a spend a fortune in upgrading your gun. You will often see someone buy a $200 or less gun and completely replace all the innards with all these high end parts piece by piece, and then they all upgrade with accessories that would be found on real weapons and suddenly there airsoft is over a thousand dollars. Really is a waste of money to do this but some people are crazy.

But generally no, airsoft guns are not more expensive than the real thing.

I also would be broke from airsoft if we could play it here, it looks awesome!
But in regards to the vests and all the gear, how would you know you got hit?

It makes a thwack noise. And it honor code. Cheaters get kicked real quick.

I'm a sucker for futuristic-looking guns, especially the XM-8. The OICW is my favorite, but seeing as it never went into serial production, I seriously doubt that there is an airsoft version.

Some kind of LMG (M249 and the like) would be awesome as well, but I'm not sure if it's practical in airsoft. Probably better to start with an assault rifle.

There was an XM-8 but it was not so good. Support weapons are nice to have, but in reality are heavy to carry and waste bb's.

No, they cost around 10% of their counterparts.

wat?

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every AEG is a support gun due to the amount of ammo they can hold. You'll most likely find an LMG too heavy for your first outing (though there is a polymer M249 out there).

Futuristic looking... there are Tavors, F2000s, P90s, G36s (this will be in your price range), AUGs (especially the A3 model), M41 Pulse Rifles, Masadas, Type 97s. There are a lot of rail kits that will make a normal looking gun look futuristic.

Yeah, I thought so.

As for the XM8, I found one for $200 by SRC (Taiwan Star Rainbow Company), is that crap too?

Off hand I can't remember, but leaning towards yes (though beware of gun snobs). There are tons of text and youtube reviews. Retailer reviews will be very detailed but oversell the gun as they want you to buy it.

SRC is hit or miss.

How do you feel about the H&K G36C?

Also, lots of manufacturers make sportline models now.

Like CA, ICS, KWA and G&G.

It usually means getting pretty good internals with a nylon fiber body.

I dunno, I was thinking everyone would be like "Look at the pussy with the full protection". Still better than losing a tooth, obviously, but not much fun anyway.

Oh yes, the Tavor and F2000 are two other favorites of mine, as is the AUG. Famas is pretty cool too, kinda looks like the BR from Halo.

Unfortunately, the stuff I can get here is kinda limited, most guns are by Marui, Dboys or Jin Gong.
The G36C is kinda cool too, but I'd prefer the Tavor, F2000 or Famas.

Thanks to both of you.

but I'd prefer the Tavor, F2000 or Famas.

There are two Tavors and F2000s. One set is really good but really expensive (Ares & G&G). The others are entry level. The JLS F2000 has a very, very bad rep. The S&T Tavor gets sneering comments but reviews say it's a good entry level gun. The only FAMAS is a TM one. People will criticise them for being such early airsoft guns but they're fine for skirmishing.

"Look at the pussy with the full protection".

Ignore them. Going without mask crosses over from brave to dumb unless you're a dedicated sniper. You may also run into people who shout orders at you even when your current position is far better for you, or want you to give them the objective for no reason other than they can get the glory. Ignore them. It's very easy to puncture big egos as everyone secretly fears what they're doing is glorified dress-up.

Well, this is certainly helpful. Thank you, sir.
I guess I'll go with the S & T Tavor if I can find it, or a G36C othwise. Which brand would you recommend for the latter?

As for the FAMAS, I found one by Marui. Is Marui a garbage brand in general?

Edit: Just found out TM is Tokyo Marui, so scratch that question.
Is there some kind of airsoft FAQ or wiki?

Another problem I just ran into is that one of two (?) local airsoft clubs (in fact, the one that has the better designed homepage and seems more appealing and active in general) cosplays as Russian paramilitary, and thus owning a AK47 is mandatory. Fucking ridiculous if you ask me, especially since using it all the time is actually not mandatory.
The AK47 is an iconic gun and I appreciate the design, but I have no intention of buying an airsoft version of it, ever.

:lol

Yeah, I'll be very careful as to what kind of club I'm going to join.

The JG G36C is actually pretty good for its price point. Only upgrade suggestion I would say would be a better hop up bucking.

My only thing with S & T is their Tavor gas a polycarbonate gearbox. I've never used a gun with one, but I would be concerned about durability.

We've run a paintball field and a store for a few years, opened up the fields to airsofters and started putting together events this summer. As a player I really miss the oomph of a paintball hit, but as an event planner it's a hell of a lot more interesting to put together events, due to the many functional classes. It's growing like mad around here too, which is cool.

Also made a video promoting one of the events, featuring the local team (I'm the dude running through the trench firing an UMP at 1:35 and tossing grenades later on)

Man this brings back memories. I used to do this for a while when I was a teenager but after people started graduating to full auto gas/battery powered weapons I just couldn't put up the cash to compete. It was fun as hell running team deathmatch in the local woods/abandoned buildings.

AEG come in all prices now, so just hop back on!

I just ordered a Polar Star PR-15. I'll update with pics and how it performs. I hope this is the last gun I will ever have to buy.

i am curious on what a decent gun would be for a starter to airsoft. I have been paintballing for years now and never really got into airsoft until a few months ago.

I would recommend a polymer M4. Such as G&G or KWA's. if you do want to go metal bodied, Echo-1, Airsoft GI's G4 line is good. I only say M4 because of all the accessories available for them if you want trick out your AEG. That being said, I love seeing all the wonkier weapons out there.

Wish we had this in Australia..
Damn restricted, low slow tech, backwards rules country.

Yeah, Australia is a mofo with the gun laws. Although it is my understanding that you can get an airsoft gun if you either fill out a lot of paperwork, or get one that shoots at a extremely low velocity.

Running the Polarstar for the first time today. The cold should be interesting.

So both my G36 and Tavor are gone (Tavor was the better gun if anyone was interested). Got an MP5K

and a SIG 556 DMR

I might have gone overboard on the 556. Thing's essentially a PSG-1 with a Sig as the base instead of a G3.

Yeah, but STANAG mags. That is why I would prefer it. Does it have full auto option?
