Akiba's Beat - Review Thread

To be fair, I'm not sure Ghostlight were ever really amazing. It was nice as a UK gamer to be able to get certain games that weren't released over here (and I'm glad they stuck Persona 3 Portable and Trails in the Sky on PSN so I could get them on my Vita) but otherwise, ehh.

Their new direction is funny though. It's like they're just buying whatever they can get the cheapest licence for. I love Lost Dimension mind, easily the best game they've managed to grab.
Well, they're also working on the PC version of Tokyo Xanadu.

Well, I'm glad to tell you they have many more games coming soon (mainly on PC of course), but that just shows how badly they need to update the website or increase their social media presence in general. People know more about their line-up thanks to Twitter and Facebook than any of their own websites.

Marvelous Europe does a much better job on social media at promoting their games - including their back catalogue. At times an onlooker would be hard pressed to believe both companies are subsidiaries of Marvelous.

It's because Marvelous Europe clearly has a social media specialist of their own, which helps since they have less than half XSEED's followers on Twitter. XSEED squanders the potential of their follower base, meanwhile, and I've had to remind them how this will continue to bite them in the ass.

What a frustrating company. XSEED does great localizations and has pretty good support, but their old problems might be too rooted to fix quick enough, if they're fixed anyway.

Yup, exactly that. Marvelous Europe have always ensured they had a community manager on hand (iirc the last one got promoted to production) and they are at least doing a good job at building up a brand around all their games - regardless of origin (Marvelous Japan or licensed for publishing elsewhere).

Akiba's Beat is a bad game, not surprising it flopped. I only bothered finishing it because I had nothing else to do and didn't feel like playing any of the games in my backlog.

This is why I've always respected Working Designs/Gaijinworks' mentality. Vic never localizes a game automatically or because of a publisher. He's passed on games that he thought were flat out inferior to the predecessor(Dragon Force 2) or just not worth playing, and it's kept his business afloat(excluding the Growlanser Generations debacle, thanks Sony). Sure, they rarely release games, but when they do, you know it'll be one worth your time.

All I know is that XSEED has pretty much lost me as a customer as things stand. I have no idea what they're releasing other than that Cold Steel port, which I'm not buying because I already have it. I mean, I get it, business is business, and they're focus is shifting to PC ports, but I find it sad personally as they were one of my favourite localizers. As Kresnik mentioned, I am happy the missed out on Ys8 and Tokyo Zanadu as I no longer trust that they wouldn't skip the vita versions. Such a weird thought as these had XSEED stamped on them. but that's just what the current situation is.

I really hope that that XSEED finds a nice equilibrium with PC ports and console localization efforts.
