Bought Madness Returns at a midnight opening for Duke, and I'm currently playing the original Alice on my PS3 that I downloaded in game with the voucher. Was about a gig to download.

Why are there so many discrepancies about the orginal Alice DLC? One person said it was only playable in the menu from the disk, another said it's only a PC download now someone is saying it's a download.

It's a download, but you need the disc in order to play it.
Which is why I said it's pretty similar to Extraction/Dead Space 2 were you had to install it (the download/file was in the disc), but still needed the disc to play it.
For some reason jaekwon didn't got a voucher-code, but got a code for the PC version by registering the game on ea.com

I'm guessing the PS3/360 versions require the disc (like Dead Space 2), but the PC version may not have the same requirement...perhaps because there is no risk of someone buying it pre-owned, so there's no need to provide an incentive to buy it new or stop people from trading it in. Just a guess.
Also, the Alice page at EA.com says if you download it from Origin (the EA store) by June 17 you will get Alice: The Complete Collection, which comes with the original Alice.

Does the original Alice still include the opening cinematic with the house burning down and her toy rabbit falling (complete with character voice-overs telling Alice to wake up)?
Do the characters have actual speech in the gameplay, for example the Cheshire Cat and Alice herself?
I love the original game, it just isn't much fun to play on my PC today as there are no widescreen resolutions, so I'm hoping for it to work out well on the 360/PS3 (still trying to find out which is the best version to get).
The opening cinematic was there, yes. The character voices seem all there too; I haven't noticed a time yet that a character spoke and the voice was not spoken as well as text. The game runs well, I played for 2 hours and I only had one minor framerate chug. Though, not having played the PC original, the game seems clunky and archaic to me, especially the way Alice moves and jumps.
i was hoping this would work. using your serial number to register the game on ea.com ties the game to origin just the same as buying a steamworks game. no reason not to reward those of us who want a copy on our shelf.
has anyone downloaded the version from origin yet to confirm if it's just the original game same as ever or if they've added some widescreen resolutions?
Sure there are. It's a Quake 3 engine game so you can set the resolution to be whatever you want.
Find the "config.cfg" file somewhere in the game's directory. Change (or add if it's not there) the following:
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customwidth "<your res here>"
seta r_customheight "<your res here>"
Save and launch.
This is the common solution for pretty much all Quake 3 engine games (though the config file is sometimes called something different, for example I think Call of Duty is CoDSP.cfg). IIRC it's exactly the same for Tech 4 games but I think Doom 3 itself is the only Tech 4 game that doesn't have widescreen resolutions listed in the menu.

You can't change the FOV in the ini for Alice, you have to do it in the console (the command is just FOV <insert FOV here>, you can bind it to a key if you want). I've never bothered with it in this game, vert- isn't bad enough in Alice to make it worth the hassle. Does anyone know if the FOV is adjusted in the console port?
