Randy Pitchford Talks Aliens: Colonial Marines Release Date, Prometheus Possibilities
PSB: Would you describe the FPS feel as grittier and more realistic, or focused on arcadier accessibility?

RP: I would say that the player’s experience for Aliens: Colonial Marines will tend closer to the gritty realism side. I say that because sometimes the gameplay footage we use for marketing will tend to focus more on the action — which is definitely in there — but you can’t really feel difficulty and challenge as well when you’re trying to promote and market the game using promotional footage.

Aliens: Colonial Marines for PS3

PSB: How are you approaching the control scheme? Does the game feature aim down the sight and a two-weapon limit? Are there any equipment slots or ways to customize your character?

RP: Looking down the sights properly is a big deal. Gearbox is really proud of its heritage in the evolution of down-the-sights views having really pushed that feature forward in the first Brothers in Arms game. Since then, every shooter we’ve created has featured direct down the sights views with ballistic weapons — including Borderlands. There are still some things we’re bouncing around between with respect to how we’re managing weapon slots and equipment with ACM, so I’ll reserve making a commitment on that right now.

Peer review and testing with customers is really important to us in the tuning process. If any of your readers are in Dallas, TX and want to be part of our user testing program, they should check out our website for more information.

Aliens: Colonial Marines - Tension Shot

PSB: Displaying the aliens themselves is a tricky balance between showing too much and showing too little. What’s your philosophy when it comes to showing them in the game?

RP: It’s been fun for us to dream up the presentations, but we’re not approaching it like no one knows what a xenomorph looks like. We do have some awesome new variants to reveal for the first time, so we try to get value out of those moments for the experience when you’re playing the game.

PSB: Finally, how important is the multiplayer experience to Aliens: Colonial Marines? Can you give us any hint as to the way it will play?

RP: Multiplayer is a big deal for us. It’s getting a huge amount of attention. I think we’ll be looking for some opportunities very soon to get some people outside of our studios, including some journalists, to have a chance to preview the multiplayer game and play a bit of it. We’re really looking forward to testing it against other eyes and getting some feedback from that, so it shouldn’t be too long before we make that happen.

This had better be good. I'm cautiously optimistic.
This. I'm really hoping it's not the "run to x, preordained event and player movement, run to y, preordained event and movement, run to z" etc. Which is exactly what it looks like. I'm all for the atmosphere and the graphics, but I don't want to play a movie, I want to play a game with dynamic set pieces and areas of combat independence. Maybe I'm asking too much?

Looks too much like monster closet jump scares so far with the definition of on rails.

Looks great, as long as all the cool scenes shown aren't fully scripted but just the enemy AI dealing with your squad how it sees fit.

I still don't understand how this game can take place on the colony. Didn't that place go nuclear at the end of Aliens?

Need to see real gameplay before making a judgement.

I want this to be good, great even. But I doubt it will be. I've said it already in a couple past threads for this game, but it'll disappoint majorly. The most recent AVP also looked somewhat decent from trailers, and that game was as generic as it gets.

And lol at prometheus possibilities. If this game flops, or doesn't do anywhere as well as they'd hoped, which I'm sure will happen, they won't be touching anything related to Aliens for a while, or ever again.

Is the recent AvP game worth $20 for a good Aliens FPS experience before this game comes out?
YES. The Marines segment is pretty much all fan service, playing an Aliens scenario. There are grievances in the script and certain choices though. The Predator missions surprised me the most because they felt like Metal Gear Solid on antigravity.

And the kills are OH SO SATISFYING.

Just don't expect anything like an active multiplayer scene, which is a huge shame.

It's basically Fan Fiction trying to replicate Aliens instead of trying to be anything original it seems.

Could still be fun, but everything shown so far looks like the game was made by fans... which is never a good sign when you want something original.
But if they manage to get a good atmospheric game going, then I'm not going to complain.

Gearbox should have rather done left4dead-type co-op game, where you move a group of marines in dark areas. In the same way like left4dead, there would events, in which you prepare for massive alien attack, by placing gun turrets and taking good positions. But thats going to be wishful thinking, and looking at the video footage, the game is going to be simplified overscripted shooting festifal, made for the masses. Even l4d-series have been selling really well, it seems that Gearbox has no courage to try something new or similiar.

Far from being an AVP from the times, when they were only a couple of seconds or sudden death. In addition to the facehuggers in particular which were very frightening.

that gameplay is from the developer commentary a few months ago.

Correct. This is *not* new gameplay. Anyways, I've been waiting for this one a long time as well. Hopefully Gearbox can pull this off and give us a great follow-up to ALIENS.

So they lack courage because they dont copy the game you want ? How many hours did take you to complete btw?
So courageous

For them breaking my heart and delaying the game they sure are pumping out a lot of promo stuff recently. Maybe they are trying to make up for that.

Was excited for this, but it just looks more and more like generic FPS in Alien environment rather then the game I want.

Not really. The problem with L4D type game is that it gets old really fast. (I played L4D2 for about 10 hrs and realized it is basically the same shit over and over again and quit it for good).

The dev walkthrough really scared me away from this game. The new trailer mainly being all that junk that happened in the walkthrough doesn't make me too optimistic.

Would love to be wrong and have this game turn out awesome...

I remember reading in an early preview that there actually will be moments like that where you'll be forced to seal or not seal doors and basically set up the room for an incoming assault. Who knows if that's still in there though.
