All PS3's will ship with a HDD... "confirmed"? (not actually confirmed)

yes.
I'm going by what I hear, and I haven't heard a single word about 'standard HDD' with anything PS3 related.

It's almost like he had to one up MS on every single point. Let's see what they deliver , as they say "Day One".

If the PS3's HDD is upgradeable, then dev's will have to deal with the possibility of it not being present. Therefore, this conversation is just fanboy rhetoric and hyperbole. NEXT THREAD

:lol

There are lots of detachable parts on a console. Controllers, mem cards, cords, etc... It's not the devs problem if people take off their HDD that comes with the system (allegedly) for whatever reason. It's not science people.

But what if Sony takes it off before it hits retail and makes it optional? That is the point. He wants people to program as if it is standard, but he was ambiguous in his statements and left the door open for it NOT being standard.

That is some real wishy washy leadership right there.

"Ok. There might be a shark in the tank. There might not. I just want you to swim across the tank assuming that it is there."

Yeah, that's pretty weak 'confirmation'. More selective bolding ahoy!

It's not that there is a version that has HDD or that doesn't, we'd like you to develop software with the assumption that all PS3 have HDD, this is my request. Later, we'll deliver you various information when we announce the price and the SKU, but considering what the market is demanding, we think it's important that I tell you today that, for starters, HDD is the premise. I want you to understand it. Anyway, this HDD is standard SATA 2.5'' drive that is used in PC, so anyone who can use PC can connect it by themselves, or, we may put it in all PS3, I think it all depends on the market. But as a platform, I'd like to repeat, it's all right that you think it has HDD. In an environment always connected to the network it's unthinkable that it doesn't have HDD, so I assume you can feel secure to develop software.
Sounds like he's saying, "The HDD is really important to the ways the PS3 can be used, so please please develop for it. We'll tell you whether it's included or not...later on."

Well, clearly then it's a fuckup on Sony's part. If we're going by what was said recently, I don't think it will be an issue.

"NOT MY PROBLEM"

Not trying to damage control, because I actually do hope that PS3 has a HDD standard (it'd be insane not to)... but I think Sony was vague about this one bullet point for good reason -- price point. Nobody knows 100% what the final business model will be, not even Sony at this point (although they probably have a very good idea).

And to think, we only have two more months of threads like this one until we get to E3, and then MAYBE some of these questions will be answered! :D

One thing's for sure:

Somebody in Redmond is hoping and praying that Sony does make their HDD standard.

Come to think of it, at least two people in Redmond. :lol

Even less, the Sony E3 conference could be on May 9th :D :D

Guys if it was standard do you think maybe they would of let us good ol' developers know so we could design our games around it?
Like they'd actually trust us with important tactical information, like the final specs of the machine. Puhlease. :lol

WRM, I think it was GDC last year, where rumours abounded that 360 teams had been told NOT to assume a hard drive. How did that one turn out again?

8 months away from launch I think it's reasonable that the specs haven't been finalized.

Apparently standard HDD is the dierection Sony is leaning. Which is not surprising since the BR spec calls for the presence of a HDD.

Yeah! We're on a limited schedule here people! More inanage aruging must ensue, and at a faster rate!

BluRay spec requires a HDD? Does that mean all the BluRay stand alone players are coming with a hard drive built in?

I don't give a damn whether or not it comes with the machine or not as long as developers are encouraged to actively use it for content, unlike the Xbox 360. I believe/hope that despite its vagueness, Ken's speech seemed to indicate as much.

I doubt any SCEE rep could be confirming anything of the sort when Kutaragi himself said two days ago that Sony was not yet sure if it would be included in every box or not. Someone is getting their wires crossed somewhere along the line.

so devs can use it for games/optimaztion/see saints row
that saint's row stuff is horse shit. volition knew months before that the HDD wasn't going to be there. It isn't like that feature was up and running and MS pulled the carpet from under them.

That is like saying 'the game would have ran better with with more RAM'. Sure developers could do some different things if the hardware was different, but don't blame MS. The developer knew long in advance, and if they really wanted to do it, then they could have done it.

Every Ps3 will be a TARD PACK!

why include the HD when they know they are just trying to get people to buy it for blu ray movie viewing. An added gamer pack (the hd) will be seperate. The whole idea is to get the ps3 into as many homes as possible quickly.....hd will be seperate.

Archive this along with my info on the ps3 not shipping till xmas holiday time way back before the x360 was even launched.

I dont intend on eating any crow either on this.

Every PS2 is also a tard pack with the memorycard lacking. I also see the HDD being sold seperately.

I bought a memory card for my PS2 at launch. Then later I bought an ethernet adapter. Then a headset. Then a component video cable. Then a hard drive (HDLoader). Damn thing cost me more than my launch Premium 360. So, yeah, it was a 'tard pack, it just took me a few years to realize it. Even without the hard drive that basic PS2 that I needed to save games, play online and use my HDTV cost over $400. 360 isn't expensive when you look at what you get, despite what some have claimed. Likewise, for what you get, PS3 will be a great deal despite the high price.

What f*cking demand curve is Sony looking at in the United States? Because when I float the idea of a $425 PS3 to people, they think its ridiculous and I feel the same. I'm sorry, but I could get a nice new PC for that price (at least, comparative to the 5 year old comp I am using now)! There better be some kind of whopper of a game that only appears on PS3!

Why are you telling them about that specific price for the system?

$425 would only be $25 dollars more expensive than the Premium 360...demand has been pretty good for that.

Sorry for double post. Isn't this the least that PS3 is going to cost? (as per Sony's conference)

No that was just a rumor. Kutaragi didn't mention anything about the price of the PS3 during that conference.

Ah okay. Well it still seems as though the system will be expensive either way with these components. Wait til' E3/2nd Sony Conference/September/2007 I guess.

One of the Japanese articles that was released online after the talk seemed to mention that it was confirmed, but I think everyone was just confused by the wording of things. Ken apparently could've been a lot clearer about things, and when you use noncommittal language like that even the press has trouble figuring out what you're saying. :lol

I'll believe what the PS3 will bring once I see it in stores. Until then, it's just noise.

copying Xbox Live with absolutely no original features to set it apart FTL

Yep. They want wiggle room so they can possibly pull the same shit MS did.

People wanted them to have an online plan that could compete with XBL, they're apparently doing just that and its a bad thing? Am I missing something here?

compete =! copying

I'll be a day one customer either way, but let's not be blind to the fact that Sony is being praised for everything the 360 was scolded for...*cough*microtransactionsandworldwidelaunch*cough*

I don't think anyones praised Sony for the microtransations. They have praised them for not pretending that the current online plan they had would work next gen. If you check older threads you'll see many people thought their PS3 online plan would be similar to the PS2's. This showed that its going to be alot more than that.

As far as the worldwide launch goes, MS was initially praised for that and when people saw how bad it went they were bashed. If Sony can't pull off the launch the way they have planned out then they'll people will get angry about that also.
