The dilemma the OP posted is a little bit different i think. If the dog is so starved that he eats shit umm.. right out of the tap, there could be a health issue. i would recommend checking with the vet.

Ifaik even cheap food has to adhere to standards that take into account the minimum and maximum amount of nutrients that is needed to sustain a pet. Cheap food may not have the amount of luxury ingredients that more expensive food has, but it should by no means be bad for your pet. A certain balance of ingredients could, however, be a cause of coprophagia.

I was told once that if a dog's shit is being eaten (by anyone), it's because the dog is eating too fast, and the only remedy is to feed it more often but in smaller amounts. That way, the food is better digested.

Having four dogs who all eat the same, this may be too much of a pain. But the shitter might just be chowing down so fast his food comes out whole. And the shiteater is like "hey, free seconds."
