Playing Pictionary at the moment with some friends.

They are playing a rule where you can draw a word that sounds the same as the target word. The example here is drawing a Fairy for the word "Ferry". Is this bullshit? I called bullshit but the other teams are okay with it. I'm struggling to continue here with a rule like this. It simplifies the game way too much. Fairy and ferry aren't even the same; they use two different vowels!

I'm contemplating calling quits after this first game. I don't wanna lose an All Play round because of this bullshit.

I've never played. Is the goal just to get your partner to blurt out a word? If so then you can't tell the difference between the two so essentially they blurted out the correct word.

Similarly, I have some new friends who are "hardcore" Catan fans - like, they love to play it half the times we hang out at least. But they either ignore or don't know about half of the rules that are critical to the game. It's kind of funny.

6 cards = safe, instead of 7 (totally changes the flow of the game)
No trading (wtf)
No resources picked up on your second settlement being placed

And many more small ones.

Tons of people have weird little additions and subtractions to every game under the sun like this. I don't think I've played a game of Monopoly exactly correctly in my life.

So yes, you are being a bit of one given the casual setting.

I can see being a stickler like if you've got like a dedicated board game hobby night and everyone's super into board games.

It's OK though, Catan is absolutely based on RNG and basically requires no skill to win, so even with those silly rules it's still the same thing!

Funny you bring this up, I just played this a week ago with my family and saw this exact strategy in the rulebook. There was also a little section that says how you should set some ground rules between players meaning you can always change it if everyone agrees with you...but I guess they don't lol

Sometimes rules, challenge and the "idea of the game" lose to just having fun. If most people choose to just have fun then anyone objecting would be a buzzkill.

It's pictionary for fucks sake. Just have fun as a group of friends.

Seriously, just play with it. It's supposed to be game, and finding homophones sounds like it's actually pretty creative and more fun than sticking to stuffy rules.

Actually, you're allowed to draw things that sound like the word you're looking for, but you're *not* allowed to draw an ear to indicate that's what you're doing.

So the outcome of the game depends completely on the dice rolls instead of just almost completely, sounds like great fun.
The only house rule we have is that the resource cards are open. Makes those monopoly cards a bitch.

I think drawing a fairy for ferry is relatively creative. It isn't your friends fault that words sounds similar. We can't all be van Gogh, so if they've found a creative way to cut corners I don't see why that's bad. I don't think it's against the rules either.

Can they just blurt out the answer? Or do you make them write it out and spell everything correctly?
