It's a rather large image but here is one of the classics in North American art:
Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) 1875
by Thomas Eakins

Image is 4537 x 5627

I got to see this in person at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and it was awe inspiring.

Saw this picture last week and as a german with parents that fled from eastern germany i really like it.
It shows a women fleeing from east to west berlin.
Border guards from east germany try to reach her but the west german border guards protect her.

My guess would be middle east, maybe syria civil war?
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Still pretty incongruous. Camo-wearing fighters and then you have this guy in a nice suit, shades on, causally holding an AK in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Idk, reminds me of a character out of a crime thriller

Males from the Selk'nam people (indigenous to Patagonia, in southern Chile and Argentina) dressed up as ancient spirits during a ritual, an initation rite into adulthood.

Sadly, the Selk'nam were victims of a horrifying genocide during the 19th Century by european settlers who hunted them like wild animals (or worse), spurred by various cattle companies who paid them (while the chilean government did nothing to protect the Selk'nam). Today, the Selk'nam are almost extinct - descendents are usually mestizos (selk'nam and european blood) and few in numbers. No one alive (except maybe 2 people with dubious claims) is able to speak the Selk'nam language.

A horrible tragedy that has been all but forgotten, even in our own country.

Not exactly "historical" but I saw this photoseries on my feed one day and it stopped me in my tracks. It's called "before they pass away".

This photographer travelled the world photographing secluded tribes. I thought it was such an incredible project.

I just checked this out and the most striking one to me is the Asaro Mudmen.

Josef Goebbels when he realizes the cameraman is a jew.

Heinrich Himmlers looking a prisioner at the Dachau Concentration camp. Just look at his expression. He was one fucked up hateful evil bastard. I think this guy was even more extremist than Hitler.

I've always thought Raising a flag over the Reichstag is an incredible picture. The picture shows a Russian soldier hoisting the flag of the Soviet Union over the bombed-out German capital of Berlin. It's so sinister looking, but you can tell how glorious it must have been for the Soviet troops and citizens when they saw it. It symbolized the (near) end of an absolutely horrific war that Germany waged against the Soviet Union. The reason I find it especially sinister is because we know what's happening in the background of Berlin (and the other parts of Germany that the Red army captured) at that time, which is that tons of civilians were killed and up to 2 million women were raped. It was the ultimate payback for what the German army did to the Soviet population, and I feel like this picture perfectly captures the immensely dramatic and tragic climax to an immensely dramatic and tragic war.

This is a photo taken by a British war photographer in 1917 of the trench warfare in World War I. From the comments on reddit, I learned that those streaks of light are not artillery (which I had previously thought), but are from huge flares that the armies would shoot into the night sky so they could see enemy troop movements. Awesome picture of an absolutely dreadful time and place in history.

Once I found out the photo was staged (they had already hoisted the flag the previous day iirc) it disappointed me.
