Amazing SNES tracks redone Genesis style

to think, if axelay would of been on Genesis, chances are it would of still had a great soundtrack and actually been a good shmup!

super metroid sounds incredible. btw. reminds me of terminator.

holy shit maridia sounds tits-magical on this. fuck dude.

i've always preferred the sound of the genesis, this dude is awesome. plus, his youtube handle is one piece related!

Genesis sound gives me a headache for whatever reason. It is probably why I never finished a Genesis game other than Gunstar Heroes.

WHY? SNES had more channels, its better. Just leave well enough alone

I don't think it's that the genesis stuff is better, it's just got it's own unique sound. I kind of like the crunchy, electronic nature of genesis sound. But purely asthetically the snes was better.

you're an awful poster, you know that?

If I didn't it's not like your post would change my mind.

That DKC2 remix is especially garbage and an insult to Wise.

How is making a bunch of good music sound worse threadworthy?

Okay, I'm only joking (sort of), some of these arrangements are pretty decent, for the Genesis anyway. Unfortunately, all it does is highlight how much better the SNES was at the whole music thing :/

Super Metroid sounds alright, some places are kinda cool.

DKC2 is pretty bad. Jeez, that song was designed for a more symphonic sound, not chiptunes, and it really shows. The original had really deep drums and horns, and the sound of water and debris sloshing about in a sunken ship in the background, something which is totally lost in the conversion.

Yeah. I think I might like the MMX Genesis takes more than the originals. Does not work for DKC2 at all, though.

I don't even concede this much anymore. I used to just defer to SNES heads when it came to these arguments in the past, but the more I actually catch up on its library the more I realize its audio selection is generally overrated as fuck, even if it is the more capable machine. Weak drums, horns, and guitar all around.

I've really only heard a select few games that made the thing shine, FF6 probably being my favorite so far.

I actually think the melody (what's there of it, anyway) sounds better but the percussion sounds worse, which was the opposite of what I expected.

Let me just say this: I bought (back in the 90's) the FF6 soundtrack over buying the game (not to slight the game, I'd just rented the shit out of it). I LOVE the SNES soundchip and the amazing soundtracks on it. I also love the Genesis and while yeah, the quality wasn't as high and the sometimes a track or two could grind on your ears there's a soul to the Genesis sound chip that made it unique and still interesting imo. Working against the technological limitations or expectations of the time is what makes NES, SNES and Genesis soundtracks so awesome to listen to.

Awesome. Loved the sound from the Genesis, made it so unique. SNES had a great sound chip of course, but it was the beginning of diminishing results in sound hardware. Everything using sampled sounds after that made hardware less unique and less exciting. I mean you could hear a random song you never heard before from the Genesis, C64, or NES and know exactly what system it came from. Most of my favorite SNES music was the stuff that sounded more syth like and less realistic orchestra.

what i really want to hear is the entire SoR2 soundtrack on the SNES chip.

No, you don't. Technical differences aside, Genesis did some music genres better than the SNES could. SoR would be a pretty good example of that.

I'd still like to see it done just because I dig this sort of thing, but all I can find are lousy Mario Paint renditions.

if thunder spirits is any indication, those are probably pretty close to what it would sound like.

The differences between the Genesis and SNES sound chips were not just a matter of specs with one being better than the other- they used different kinds of synthesis, SNES used samples and Genesis used FM. Samples are better at replicating acoustic/symphonic instruments, but only the most basic processing could be performed on them by SNES-level hardware. With FM, the sounds are algorithmically generated in real time, from numerical parameters. Changes to any of these parameters could be programmed by the composer to change anytime, giving a lot of potential for that tweaky, evolving feel common in electronic music. The Genesis sound tech is even based on the hugely popular Yamaha professional FM synths that are used in all kinds of music.

Maridia was remixed? Where?

Holy smokes is the title theme of Super Metroid creepy and grim on the genesis.

For a basic comparison it ain't bad, but honestly you'd need a musical prodigy like Koshiro or Uematsu composing the tracks to set a better argument.

Huh, never knew all that... cool. Explains a lot.

I dunno, SNES had DKC... but pretty much most of the library from 1991 - 1994 had a depressing MIDI vibe to it.
