I think it went something like this:
Raimi was cockblocked during the production of SM3
Everyone behaved like a little bitch
Raimi didn't want to to SM4 anymore
Tobey didn't want to to SM4 without Raimi
Sony needs to produce Spider-Man movies in a certain time frame, or they'll lose the license
New cast -> reboot

Both Tobey and Raimi were ready to do Spider-Man 4. Ready to go even had a release date. Then a few weeks later it was canned then the reboot was announced.

Even if the movie rocks, it's a waste of time. We'll have to wait years to see something we didn't already in Raimi's trilogy?

Lame.

I thought that looked terrible. It seemed too dark and the lead actor is fashioned to look like a twilight reject. The CG during mirrors edge sequence looked worse than a video game.

Why was it canceled? Too expensive?

They never really said, but read between the lines: Raimi had had enough.

Yeah, that's basically the case. I remember when Sony announced that they finally signed Raimi and Maguire for 4, then just a few weeks later it fell apart.

Basically Raimi and the studio went in different directions, starting with 3.

Now if the license had reverted back to Marvel, that would've been badass...

Trailer looks cool.

It just hit me, but I think John Hamm would make a pretty awesome Norman Osborn in a sequel. His Lex Luthor was pretty amusing in that bailout video.

If it had, we would have Spider-Man in The Avengers.

In an uncharacteristic move Sony didn't want to spend a fortune and give Maguire $40m (or whatever) for the two films. But if I remember correctly Maguire had clauses put into his contract that they would shoot in the fourth film in LA and that he had a work day of like 9-5 so he could go home to his son.

Shooting in LA meant not tax rebates. And Sony already had a script for Spiderman 5 (aka the reboot) that they liked.

All in all no one really wanted to make the fourth film.

Hoping that for a sequel. Goblin for trilogy close.
Agreed. Although I haven't been able to shake my desire to see Mysterio appear in a live action movie.

Venom/Mysterio sequel, Carnage/Goblin after? Sounds good to me.

And I wouldn't even care if they treated Carnage like a third-class citizen for the movie like Raimi did Venom. I just want to see him make an appearance.

I thought the Batman reboot was great since the story was different, and the subsequent films were much better than the original series.

Is this also true of new Spiderman - are we going to hear some different story behind Spiderman or is it going to be the same plot with different cast and director?

It is made clear in the teaser they are changing the story.

The Peter's parents stuff is shit. Let me guess, they designed the lab and technology that caused the spider to give him his powers. And his dad becomes Green Goblin.

Brush up on your spider man

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #5, 1968

The Finisher was a longtime employee of the Red Skull, and was there when the Skull found out that Richard Parker, who he thought was his own spy, was actually an American double-agent! After finding this out, the Skull ordered Parker's murder in a plane crash, and set him up so that it appeared as if he was a spy in the employ of foreign agents. The news went out that Richard and Mary Parker were traitors, but Spider-Man has just learned that they were actually heroes! And with his last words, the Finisher dies.

1 more time

...I doubt that. I think Marvel might have attempted to hold off on making a Spidey film for as long as possible, until Avengers was done. Either way, they wouldn't have put Spider-Man in the Avengers, they haven't even got all the proper Avengers in that film yet. (Vision :( )

Besides, who wants an Avengers line-up with Spider-Man but no Wolverine? :P

To be fair it has a new villain and a new cast... and a different style, so I think that even if it is another origin story, it won't be like some replica of Raimi's film.

Looks fucking rad.

I find it strange that this movie is even being made. I mean when did Spider-Man 3 come out, 2007?
It will be 5 years, same as Hulk-Incredible Hulk.

As long as it features a song by Nickelback we're golden.

Looks interesting, still think the dude seems a bit skinny for Spidey. I still hate those damn silver boots, wtf is that about?!

How do you even write a movie with Venom and Mysterio as the antagonists? Or Carnage and the Green Goblin? Hollywood should worry about that before they shit out another Spiderman 3. They really don't need team-ups that don't make sense.

I mean, Venom and Sandman (and Harry Goblin)? Two Face and Riddler? Ivy, Bane, and Mr. Freeze?

If you're going to have multiple super-villains, how about they share zero screen time (Batman Begins), or minimal screen time (The Dark Knight), because they obviously have different motivations? Or actually choose villains with similar motivations, like Kraven/Chameleon, or Green Goblin/The Jackal.

Too right. Hey, how about Kraven/Lizard? People were only asking for it for like 5 years before Spider-Man 4 got canned, and it makes way too much sense.

Sucks that Kraven isn't here in this reboot, but I also feel that he's a villain that makes more sense in a universe where Spider-Man has become established, so I'll let them off.

I'll admit I actually didn't have a screenplay prepared to back my post up. However I don't think it would be too difficult for any professional writer to pull off if needed.

Theres a big difference here though. Nobody gave a shit about either Hulk, whereas Spidey is the highest grossing superhero franchise* and was loved by many.

*for another year until Batman takes the crown

Looks good to me. I still have Spidey 3 images stuck in my head that need to be erased and this helps.

I find that hard to believe. Three Spider-Man movies have beaten six Batman movies? What Spider-Man movies am I missing?

The three earlier Batman movies didn't even do 300 million combined?

Hmm, I guess they are going for a different take, which I understandable considering this is an entirely new team.

Andrew Garfield seems like a nice fit and that first person view reminded me of Mirrorss Edge.

Solo said:
No, because Raimi wouldn't agree to the absolutely ludicrous schedule Sony had set out. That, and because Sony was forcing shit again. But mostly the schedule.

I think it was that plus the other reasons people posted. Tobey insisting on working only in LA and 9-5. Sony wanting to dictate the direction. Raimi had other ideas. It just felt like they all were posturing because they really didn't want to continue making the movie. Maybe it ran its course.

I always assumed making action movies or superhero movies would be amazing fun but most actors or directors seem to run out of gas or passion after 3 or so movies.

He is counting the 2 Nolan Batman movies. Disregarding the crappy movies that came before it.

Maybe we should disregard Spider-Man 3 since it's pure shit based on that logic? The original Batman movie isn't crappy btw but whatever.
