Amazon accidentally sent me two copies of the same game

I love Amazon, but I have been sitting with an extra package for 3 months. I havent used it, but they sent me some shipping labels that I should use in a UPS store. Thing is, I can't be bothered to go to a fricking UPS store. I feel bad.

It actually crossed your mind to screw over one of the last places that have decent customer service?

You're why the other places are assholes when it comes to this stuff.

Don't fuck this up for the rest of us you prick.

What stuff? Letting people keep accidental duplicate products? If you're talking about customer service in general, you need to specify more carefully how someone keeping the duplicate will make Amazon treat customers worse at a broad level.

Oh, I suppose you figure that they'll just absorb the loss and not in any way pass it on to us.

Even if a loss of this magnitude was passed along to everyone else it would cost a total of approximately zero, because the item is of such low value and mistakes like this are relatively rare.

The honest thing to do is to let Amazon know and return it if they want it, but let's not pretend that keeping the game will have any significant impact on costs to others or on their business.

It sounds like you're using the "but what if everyone did it?" rationale for why it shouldn't be done, but that doesn't make sense here because the only people who can do it are a tiny fraction of Amazon's customer base, dependent on how often Amazon makes an error like this. If this kind of mistake starts to hurt Amazon, they'll be more careful about shipping double items in the future. How does this hurt any other consumer? How would someone who kept the duplicate item be ruining Amazon's customer service for everyone? Does Amazon even notice when this happens? If they don't, then your concerns are unfounded.

I ordered Lego Harry Potter years 5-7 on Wednesday during a lightning deal. I check my mail and there are two individually packaged copies of the game. I was only charged once ($10 of gift card money) and the order ID's are the same on both invoices.. what should I do?

Really? You have to ask?

Lfmao, can't believe people are so morally upright that they would bother to waste their time trying to correct a piddly 2$ mistake by a giant, faceless corporation that screws over hundreds of people daily.
Who is Amazon screwing over, exactly? And last I heard, the game costed a little more than $2.

Use the website to setup a pickup?

People like to think that every single company who is of a considerable size is willing to screw them over.

And it's not like Amazon ridiculously price any of their products either.

It's only a game, doesn't cost that much and it's Amazon's fault anyway. These things happen, I'm sure the company has already provisioned for this.

I guess it doesn't really matter what you do, but personally I can't be bothered to talk to customer service. I'd probably just keep it on the shelf or give it to someone else.

This happened to me, like, 10 years ago with a copy of MGS2 :-) Gave the extra copy to my friend as a birthday present and never thought twice about it. I don't *think* that makes me a horrible person...

I have issues continually with one specific carrier, including last night. They regularly mark packages as delivered (including 4 last night - they even actually delivered 2 of the 6, but marked all as delivered at the same time!) Amazon almost always immediately sends me a free replacement and tells me to keep the original if it arrives.

I ordered Propellerhead Reason 6 last year ($400ish) and it was 3 days late being delivered. The tracking hadn't updated in 4 days. I contacted Amazon and they refunded me in full as they were out of stock. The software finally arrived 4 days later, and I contacted Amazon. They told me to just keep it at no charge for the inconvenience. I <3 Amazon.

Send them a mail, they will tell you what to do. In some cases you can keep the game cause sending it back is almost as expensive.

But it really doesn't speak for you that you have to ask first.

So actually legally, Amazon isn't allowed to ask for their $10 game back or they face a huge fine. The OP can send the game back on his own dime and will but he's under no obligation to do so whatsoever. In addition, knowing how Amazon's returns work, whoever scans the return at their facility would probably end up triggering the OP to be refunded.

That's nice and all but if you aren't an asshole it's pretty obvious what you have to do.

Whether something is technically legal if you take a law out of context doesn't change that it's morally wrong to keep something that's not yours.
"Moreover, customers who receive unordered merchandise are legally entitled to treat the merchandise as a gift."

How is this "taking the law out of context?" Where am I twisting things? They spell it out for you. It's not rocket science, it's basic reading comprehension.

The "non-asshole" thing to do is to guilt-trip someone that did nothing wrong. Gotcha.

Amazon made an honest mistake in the OP's favor, big deal, it happens sometimes. As far as Amazon's systems are concerned, one item was received. So if an attempt was made to return one copy, Amazon would end up refunding one item on top of paying return postage. So now Amazon is out that $10 plus postage to and from the receiver. By trying to do the right thing, it would end up costing Amazon more money.

He asked what he should do, we told him to contact amazon. If anything people are giving him shit for being unable to decide himself.
No, people are calling him a thief and an asshole. He clearly has a guilty conscience; hence the moral question/thread. I'd recommend finding a kid who would really appreciate it. I'm sure it would make someone's Christmas.

Sorry to bump the thread but I just got home from work and still had it open on my screen...

Didn't know there were so many scumbags on gaf. Holy crap.

Tell them OP. 90% chance of them telling you to keep it, Amazon is generally good to their customers.

Aren't you the perfect little boyscout.

He did order it, it just happens to have been sent twice. Sure you could be all literal and say the first one is the only official order, but I think we all have the ability to determine that this wasn't a random posting to him. And that's why we all said to contact amazon first. If he just sent it back then yes, it might be processed as a refund, but if they really wanted it back I'm sure a note would be made that it wasn't a return in their system. If they even wanted it back in the first place, but by not even attempting to contact them then yeah, you're an ass.

I have a confession I got 2 extra memory cards from amazon and didn't report it. To be honest I don't feel that bad about it due to them making a mistake at one order and being corporate assholes themselves. If I made them send an extra shipment due to not getting mine on time I would likely return it. Yes it is not the right attitude if you apply universal ethics into it, but in terms of who is suffering nobody is suffering extra from this.

If it were me I'd pinch and squeeze my flaccid dick until I could fit the head through the little hole in the middle of the disk. Then I'd paint the front of the disk to look like a flower and I'd show the world what a artist I am and how beautiful life is.

Do unto others...

I'll smoke someone up but I ain't stealing from them

Ya feel me?
Not really. They sent it out by mistake, he didn't take it off the shelf. There was no intent on the part of the OP to steal. They fucked up, he keeps it and they're none the wiser. They're not asking for it back.

When I was a kid there was a vending machine with trading cards in it at my local ice rink. One way or another I discovered that if you put a nickel and hit refund sometimes two would come out. I sat there for hours stealing money from the machine. No one knew what I was doing and probably thought I was weird.

I probably stole over $100 over year or so I did it. 12 year old me couldn't keep it a secret and I told all my teammates. They were like animals and a mob formed after I demonstrated. I glad kids are stupid so I don't have to feel that bad about it now.

I got a PS2 and 5 games free a month or two after it launched from Sears :)

My Sears credit card was maxed (first CC I owned, $500 limit) was looking at the console and told the kid I couldnt afford it. He said "lets check your limit".
Swiped my card, punched in some numbers, said "your good, pick what you want and I'll make it work"

Started grabbing everything I could, teen at the counter scanned my card, punched in some numbers and handed me a reciept.

Never got charged.

I once ordered a DVD of cartoons and was erroneously sent a "Learn Polish" DVD/book set along with it. I didn't return it, and I didn't bother to learn Polish. The Fire awaits.

pay shipping back?... amazon?... ha!

i always contact them for returns, tell them i dont want to pay shipping to send it back and theyre like, "no prob, bob."

always worth a try.
