Amazon customers angry over New 3DS XL scalpers

Wrong. Scalpers provide utility. Imagine if everyone who bought a LE was a collector. The prices in the secondary market would be sky high because few would want to sell. When the scalpers have the items to sell, prices are higher than msrp but they are held down compared to what they would be. Why do you think the prices of rare items usually go up over time? As long as the demand is still there, the available resell supply diminishes once there are no scalpers.

I'll remember that next time a gig for a band I want to see sells out instantly and viagogo is instantly flooded with tickets at 4x the face value. That'll make me feel much better.

I don't know why people think the MM 3DS XL is sold out. Nintendo says that there will be units for sale on Feb 13 at your local stores and nintendo.com. People seem to be getting all worked up for nothing.

He is right though, if Nintendo produced enough then there wouldn't be this problem.

I have yet to see any hard data that scalpers are the reason that the MM N3DS sold out so quickly. Even if there weren't any scalpers these people probably still wouldn't've been able to buy one and they'd be just as upset as they are now.

I am not sure of that. It is the prices on ebay and amazon market place which drives the knife in and twist.

It's really interesting, I was able to pick up a ALBW 3DS XL no problem for $150 in December, check even the Smash XL you could still find in stores recently. Now, LE really means limited

It's one thing for a scalper to go out and buy 10 copies of this 3DS XL...

It's another for the company to MAKE 10 copies and not even give people a chance to order it.

I'm sorry but the fault lies in Nintendo's arcane ways of creating artificial demand.

Damn, I really wanted the LoZ MM special edition, but I think the pre-orders came and went while I was at work and unable to grab a moment to check my phone. Oh well, instead of buying a plain one, I think I'm just going to wait it out with my current 3DS XL, at least until Xenoblade comes out. If you're upset about the situation, I would suggest you do the same. Don't give them your money until they rectify the situation or make it worthwhile. Maybe a dent in sales will get Nintendo's attention.

Well the whole MM situation is shit as it's making it super hard to do trade-ins. Not that it matters at this point.

scalpers are people too.

It is pretty scummy.
There really should be a limit, allowing for people who might legitimately be picking up one for themselves and also friends or family, as well.

Maybe 2-3 per household, or something.

Scalpers exist because companies make stupid business decisions where they don't make enough of the stuff that people want to buy.

You should be angry at Nintendo, not scalpers. Scalpers are just the effect, not the cause.

Anyone want to buy my preorder? 616$ + free shipping and free charger.

I'm not serious here.

unless someone actually wants to give me that much money.

Like the dumb decision to release a super limited run of Gamecube adapters. That's not even a damn collectors item FFS.

Scalpers are generally cunts, so I don't entirely disagree, but if you're dumb enough to pay whatever absurdly inflated price they charge, that's on you and you alone.

If they were scalping grain during a famine, or water during a terrorist poison scare, yeah they'd be cunts. But a stupid plastic handheld that will be landfill in a few years? Naw, it's just business.

Limited Editions are Limited.

Scalpers are good at what they do, get to said limited editions and sell them for high price because of said limited-ness.

Are you guys new to the world?

The flipside is that you make too much of said limited thing and it just sits there on the shelf ala some Games recently (Skyrim).

and regardless...Amazon doesn't directly sell Nintendo Consoles sooooooo

Have any "Limited" 3DS models ever actually been that limited before? I know the Zelda ones were BF specials before, but they weren't super limited quantities or anything. More limited time. I wouldn't be surprised if there is more stock on shelves the day it launches.

There actually was a limit on these. Best Buy and Gamestop only allowed 1 unit per household.

I failed getting a Majora 3DS and the Majora LE because of these shits.

And it's not like I was 'way too late' or something like that, it was within the first ten minutes for both cases. I was entering my address+credit card info and got blocked there because both went out of stock.

So yeah, call me salty, I sure am. Fuck these pieces of shit, no matter if that business or not.

Not really. Sure scalpers will always exist, but there is a massive problem right now where 90% of the stock goes to Scalpers. There should be something that says "No, we will cancel your order because you ordered 20 on the same IP and account.". You want 20 of the same item? Go buy them from the Publisher.

Scalping IS illegal in most places. They are not stores, and they dont pay the taxes on reselling the stuff.

What if Nintendo sold each unit on a bidding site? It should eliminate scalpers by cutting them out, but then only the richest collectors would have them. I don't know if that's a bad thing considering it is limited intentionally to be rare.

They could also give a right of first refusal to their biggest customers, if they have that level of record keeping

Our as many have said, build to meet demand, then end it forever, a limited time edition rather than a limited edition.

Did they not announce it in the wee hours on the West Coast... practically screwing over a lot of people?

Screwing over people from...what...pre-ordering from GameStop?

Wouldn't a person who really wanted it immediately check other retailers and then discover that GameStop was the only place that it was sold out because the others had not even opened pre-orders yet?

I could pre-order it in time, but NoA clearly hates their fans. Other than the Pikachu XL, I don't remember any special edition selling out so fast. And this isn't the first recently, GC adapter, Amiibos, Majora LE (and the Wind Waker HD one sold out within a day too), list goes on...

If they're worried about retailer stocking their items, they could sell it through their website or something.

Literal human scum, IMO. Just because it's legal doesn't make it right.

Some reactions. They're scum because they bought a limited item that sold out in less than a day and want to resell it for a higher price.

This item would have sold out in less than a day regardless. Scalpers didn't know this would be a hot item because it sold out so quickly, and those that knew didn't make up a significant amount of orders. I'd argue that a good portion of the scalpers are simply people who preordered this item for themselves, then saw how limited it became and decided to sell it to make some money.

What scum.

Pikachu 3DS XL seemed pretty limited. The Animal Crossing 3DS XL may have been as well.

Well the gamecube adapters work only for a single game and that's Smash. It's useless outside of Smash.

And yet there's a markup of like 600%... showing again, that Nintendo (a company notorious for creating artificial demand), didn't make enough.

Even if that's true, it doesn't excuse charging that much money for it. No one would be mad about scalpers if they didn't jack up the price.

Scum may be a bit harsh, but greedy asshole seems about right.

There is.

That's the impression I get. Everybody know that the scalpers are game deep in video games currently because they know they can pretty easily corner the market and create false rarity.
Hell, some people have hundreds of Earthbound in box and they release it one at the time to raise the prices. There should be a way that when a presentation is done and the minute the product hit the amazon.ca shelves, that I have a chance to buy it.

I've always found scalping to be pretty lame, but I'm generally more upset by it when it involves not being able to get a product at all, and not just these Limited Edition scenarios. I say this not to antagonize people that really want a gold N3DS, but at the end of the day it's just a silly paint job. The regular models aren't sold out.

Now stuff like the GC adapter is annoying. Granted, Nintendo is to blame as well for not manufacturing enough. But I do find it egregious when people buy these things just because they can make a boat load at resale, particularly when the actual base product is in short supply and it's not just some marketing gimmick that's making the product special for collectors.
