Amazon no longer selling Versus XIII?

So good

Looks amazing. I really hope we get more stuff close to that.

don't know why everybody is so excited about this. lately storytelling for final fantasy and kingdom hearts sucks. barley made it through kingdom hearts birth by sleep, piece of crap.

Basically everything in this trailer.

The fact that you can actually make Noctis that powerful (according to old interviews), how heavy on the exploration side the game is, the music, the characters, the story not being done by Toriyama, modern setting / dark story too, magitek / airships, the CG, the combat system... we don't even know how summons / ex arts will work yet -- if all of this stuff is still in the game.

Yeah, I think it's something like that. Like they really don't want to fight, but they have to - it'd make for an interesting battle. I just hope it remains in the game.

I hope so, too. I love stuff like this. I really hope if anything stays the same, it's the relationship between these two characters and their families.

Scenario writer for Versus is Nojima, so there's hope in that.

I expect the entire game to be near indistinguishable from CG. Nomura wanted a world on the scale of FFXII with the fidelity of FFXIII.

I highly doubt the game will look close to CG if they plan on making it open world, but that Luminous Engine looks like it can work wonders so I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible.

I don't know the name of the character opposite Noctis in that gif and I have been just calling her Kagari for years now. I think I'll just stick with that, even when the game releases.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII 2011 Trailer

Still such a great trailer after 2 1/2 years.

This is probably my favorite Versus related Gif I've seen. I get a kick out of it every time I see it.

Thanks to Verendus for all the information and take on what is going on with SE. Excited to see what they show off.

I'm curious how much time SE will have during the Sony Conference. I'd be surprised if there was any more than a trailer for Versus given all they have to get through.

I just read the last few pages that I missed due to work. Oh my god. I am having all sorts of feelings right now. Like dying and being happy, ;___; So much hype. Someone help me.

That's it! I probably heard that name a few years back. Versus to me is like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Except a story about how close we are getting to the pot comes out every 6 months to remind us that it exists.

Just knowing the premise of the story for Versus, there's so much damn potential to tell a good dramatic story. Interested to see where they take it.

I have some faith in Nojima. He's still writing for this one right Kagari?

I just read through this thread...I'm beyond hyped right now. Beyond hyped. It's finally happening, June 10th can't come fast enough!

Nojima also wrote Advent Children and Final Fantasy X-2. Guy isn't perfect.

To be fair, it's much harder to write for a forced sequel that was never originally planned. Given what Advent Children and X-2 were trying to accomplish, I actually thought his work was pretty serviceable. Obviously nowhere near the quality of the original games in both of the series, but it should be noted that he wrote those, as well.

I didn't even notice you guys were already talking about it, me so blind. But yeah, hopefully Nomura lets him do his thing. There is potential. Anything is better than another Watanabe mindfuck in the hands of toriyama.

I'm not sure I fully understand what Verendus is trying to say. Is he saying Versus is gone and something entirely different is being announced at Sony's presser, or that it still exists and has been renamed into something else?

I don't know if I can take Versus being destroyed after waiting this long, especially if Square tries another silly "sci fi setting with magic" take on FF again.

True. And come to think of it, he was the one to write the background mythology. Maybe this time we won't get a truly incompetent XIII game at least in terms of story telling? Nah, too much to hope for.

It's probably more of the latter. He's said that Versus XIII is no longer part of the title.

No one is but the combination of people working on this game is probably one of the best teams ever put together inside of Square Enix. And everything we've seen so far has been fantastic. I really don't think you have to worry about anything with this game. They have put a lot of thought and good concepts into this game (Nomura is good at presenting original concepts, Nojima is great at putting together a script and Takeshi Nozue is the CG director who's awesome at positioning and directing scenarios)

There is very little to worry about with a team of this pedigree.

Sci-fi with magic could have worked. XIII just screwed up the premise like it did most of the stuff it tried to do.

And nobody is perfect, even the best have off-times when it comes to games movies music etc.

But his body of work is largely pretty strong. There is reason to have hope here. Of course no one is expecting Shakespeare (see what I did there?) but it has potential to be a really solid story that is told well. Throw in Nomura to assure the combat is hectic and fun, and everyone else. This is the A team. Only thing we're missing is some Matsuno perfection ;_;

edit: PS if anyone knows what Matsuno is working on now, do tell. I haven't heard anything in forever after his 3DS thing.

I'm pretty sure he's saying Versus still exists, but it will just be renamed. As for your latter comment, sci-fi fantasy has worked very well in the Final Fantasy series in the past. The setting wasn't the problem with FFXIII.

Anyone remember this quote :]

Tetsuya Nomura said:
The stories from the past entries in the Final Fantasy series are not exactly as I would have done, but that's as it should be because I didn't direct them. My only concern in terms of Versus XIII is that FF always talks about human emotion and psychologies in a broad way, and I want to go deeper in terms of offering some crude reality in terms of human emotion or human [behavior]. The goal, when a player holds a controller and plays an RPG, is to make them believe in another world – to experience a dream in a fictional world. It will be different in Versus XIII because of the intrusion of the real world, and things that are really happening. There will be less fiction and more reality.

I'm just being cautious after all the screw ups in recent years. Nojima is very good. I'm just pointing out that even the best can make a few mistakes. Basically, I'm trying to temper my own hype here to offset what I see as inevitable disappointment. And if I'm wrong, the surprise will be all the more pleasant. Unfortunately, that's the way I operate in dealings with SE nowadays.

It will take a lot to mend my relationship with Square Enix. I will admit I am hyped, but I am not boarding a full speed hype train just yet. I will be pleasantly surprised if it ends up being really good but I am still reserved in my expectations.

It's funny to think that if they just released Versus in like 2010 or something, and it was a great game and all, it likely would not have garnered this much interest. The shittyness of Square Enix this generation plus the bits of the game we've gotten to see have created a hype situation that would be impossible to plan, but it certainly works out for them.

If they do show a brand new FF, I hope they focus the reveal on 'look there are large areas and dungeons to explore', riding chocobos, bustling towns and the likes. I don't want a 20 minute gameplay trailer, but a few seconds of each of the above would let me know Square Enix plans to return to form.

Anyone remember this quote :]

I also remember him saying that the characters in v13 are going to be more human-like. He even went on to point out that the characters in ff13 were too fake and stereotypical (or something along those lines). I have no idea where that interview that was from, but it was a while ago.

Shakespeare's stories are nothing special I have never felt any emotion to whatever I was forced to study at school. His poetic language is nice though.

Thanks for the responses, gang. I hope that's the case. If Versus has become XV like the rumors have been hinting, that'd be pretty awesome. I'd hate for Square to release it as a spinoff and watch the potential sales drop, since the game really seems to have the scope and ambition of a mainline entry.

As for the sci-fi thing...I really just haven't enjoyed the FF games as much since they started going more high-tech. VI and VII's tech levels were fine, since the worlds still had grit and creativity to them. I guess that's why I like Versus' take - a "modern" FF game has never really been attempted outside of some of the cities in VII.

It'd probably be more surprising if the game was failure to be honest. It'll have people who don't like it as is always the case with every title, but just looking at what little we have seen gives the impression for me at least that this could be something special and by Verendus' account, perhaps the start of SE returning a bit to how things used to be.

I'm rather curious who the teams for the next mainline titles will be. I don't see Toriyama doing another for a while, so maybe Tabata?

What he's talking about is character.

He wants more realistic characters in the sense that people can actually relate and see where the characters are coming from instead of Drunk Lightning punching everyone for no reason other than "she's angry and that's just her character".

He wants the story to delve deep into each characters psyche so people know when characters do something you understand why that character does and acts the way he does.

It's not a bad philosophy.

SE wouldn't DARE release a new big console FF where you couldn't control airships. They know people want that badly. The same way they'll never release another big FF without proper towns or tons of NPCs.

It's funny how I would now kill for what used to be an FF staple, to simply be in their next game at all. Why did it have to come to this?

Primarily because Square stopped listening to FF fans almost entirely and decided that they needed to "expand the viability" of the series by catering to an audience that then proceeded to wholeheartedly reject them.

By this point, they've just dug themselves so deep that almost ANYTHING is a step up. Anything except more Lightning.

I will never understand how the heck people can be hype for this. It's like being hype for the last guardian. Seems silly.

Oh well hope it turns out good though.

This was most obvious during the XIV betas where endless lists of fan input was simply ignored. They literally had a beta for show, and short of bug fixes did not change much at first.

On the other hand, I guess it was XIV's crash and burn that was their biggest wake-up call too. Most of the changes and improvements very much fit in closer to what fans wanted, they even specifically say so.

I would very much like to see a future in which Square Enix cares what fans have to say again, it's starting to happen, it will take E3 to convince me though.
