Just picked up a wifi Kindle3 yesterday, as a reward for going in to deal with blown AC at our datacenter on a day off. Having fun so far, will try and jailbreak it, so I can load up some custom screensavers.

(And no, I couldn't hold out for a color e-reader. I really wanted to, but this was so damn cheap!)

Most novels aren't in colour anyway, so you win.

It's rubber? That's weird. I could have sworn it was some sort of aluminum.

It's injection moulded plastic with a rubberised finish to improve grip. No aluminium.

I finally got a Kindle, only to discover that the back of it isn't made out of plastic, but out of some sort of greasy metal. Similar to the kind of metal that a laptop that I briefly had was made out of. I know this metal doesn't bother normal people, but I just can't stand the way it feels. I guess I'm crazy, but I'll have to take it back and settle for a nook. Really wish it was made out of plastic.

The Nooks use that same type of material.

Storm of swords doesn't have it either :(

Actually, I think it does. Sync first and then go to menu while in the book and there are pages.

I didn't know they were hiding the page number in the menu.

well... our kindle got a smashed screen (our fault). Called customer service and they're sending us a new (refurbished?) one FOR FREE (shipping overnight) and all we have to do is send the other one back (with return no charge envelope enclosed) in 30 days. Amazing customer service!!!!

Oh wow, pretty cool. Thanks! I can't seem to find an option that puts it on screen at all times.

That is great, but not terribly unexpected. Amazon want to make money by selling you books, which you are less inclined to do with a smashed screen.

I am still showing the weird location instead of the page number since doing the update when I press the menu button. What am I missing?

The feature needs to be supported in individual books, and isn't widely available yet.

To be fair, Amazon has pretty fucking amazing customer service in general.

Right now I'm living in China, I just got a small amount of money that I want to spend in a e-reader. I'm almost sold with the kindle, but I have 2 questions:
- I have a HUGE collection of pdfs from this semester study courses, how is the quality to read a lot with this type of files. Since is much easier than carry all the notes.
- If I want to write, beside the app that let you write small notes, there is anyway to do it?

I was also reading the Nook Color thread, and it seems a nice mix, but here it's sold for over 300 USD.

Any advice? Thanks :D

Reading lecture pdfs ist ok if you change to landscape mode and they're not too heavy on graphics and the font is big enough for you to read without zooming (kinda hard to explain).
Writing notes is a chore for me so I rather take notes on paper while I read off the screen.
You could always upload parts of your lecture notes and I'd try to read them in different modes & write comments while taking pictures or videos.

But overall: kindle is not ideal for pdfs - I'd consider getting an ipad knockoff based on Androi (since you're already in China..)

Thanks, I will look into that, but I'm a little concern about the battery life and the quality of this copies.

Never the less, thanks for the info.

Yea reading pdf's on kindle is not ideal. The kindle will not format the text for easy reading, you'll have to do a lot of zooming in which is clunky and annoying. If the pdf is just text without images you can convert to mobi with calibre, the kindle will then format the text for easy reading. But if the pdf has a lot of images then converting to mobi will not help.

Well, I've already broken the screen to my Kindle. Has this happened to anyone else and if so is it cheaper to get it repaired by Amazon or from somewhere else?

If you want to just read books you buy, get a Kindle.

If you want to read books you buy and drm and non drm epubs (library, etc), get a nook.

If you want to read books you buy, library checkout, surf web, comics, email, get a nook color.

Kindle is a great deal, great e-ink screen - if I had to pick a dedicated and only read books I bought, I'd get this and the lighted cover. Sick battery life, it along with nook work great in direct sunlight.

Nook color is a bastard child - but I live it, at least in rooted form. I get Kindle books (kindle app), great browsing, email, games, comics. Still works great in bright light - but the glossiness of the screen is its undoing in direct sun. Biggest con is price and battery life (compared with eink).

Kindle is the best straight book replacement device. After all pros and cons weighted, I went Nook Color rooted. Pros are worth it, and no issue at all with the screen. I've read a number of books no eyestrain---even Storm of Swords.

That's been available for a couple of weeks now. So funny to hear people say page numbers don't work on ereaders. Strange, they were working on my three year old Sony. Glad to see Amazon caught up.

SO I went around a few markets but didn't find a Kindle : S

Only a bunch a fake iPads, any one knows a good copy ._.u

Sometimes China drives me crazy.

So I'm pretty certain I'm picking up a kindle. I have a couple kindle books already which I read on my DroidX but I really like the e-ink technology and want a dedicated e-reader. My phone just has too many distractions in it and I never really sit down a read on it.

It was a toss up between nook and kindle (I like the idea of the touch screen near the bottom) but all the pros of the kindle won in the end.

The one thing that's annoying me isn't really related to the kindle itself, it's the "new book" pricing of kindle books. In some cases the kindle book is priced HIGHER than the hardcover! Drives me a little nuts.

Either way I'll be grabbing a few "paperback" books on kindle first and see if the format really works with me then I'll probably suck it up and get some newer books at the price premium.

Are there any plans to release these in stores in Canada? I'd rather not deal with ordering from the states/putting a deposit in for customs.

How does it work anyway, since changing text size would throw off standardized page numbers, among other things?

Worth it for the convenience. You can buy a book from the comfort of your house, and you don't have piles of books laying around and getting dusty.

Sometimes page numbers last for more than one ebook page.

While that's true, it still is just wrong in my opinion for a digital copy of something to cost more than a physical one. It's saving the publisher money and costing the customer more?

Luckily I haven't encountered this yet since I am new to reading and all of the books I'm choosing have been around for a while.

I've been on the fence about a Kindle for so long. The real dealbreaker that's holding me back is not even that I love paper books, but that the library of stuff available for Kindle purchase in Australia is so different to the States. We have so little to choose from here. Anyone know if that's improved recently?

Okay, jumped into Kindle game.

Should be here Thursday or Friday.

If I start "buying" free Kindle books from Amazon, do they get queued up until I sign in or am I wasting time? lol

So much awesome stuff for FREE! :O

FREEEE!

They'll get added to your account. Once you've got your machine set up (or want to use the PC reader in the meantime or whatever) there should be an Archive section that lists the available downloads in your account.

Thanks.

Hot damn.

There's so much awesome free stuff! D:

Also snagged the Solomon Kane and Conan collections and a Red Sonja story.

Should go well with the FREE Burroughs first five Mars stories. :q

I've only just discovered Instapaper's wireless delivery service. You can have it deliver articles formatted like Kindle magazines and newspapers. So awesome and easy to read.

So I've been on the fence on getting a Kindle for months. Have there been any rumors/speculation about an improved model coming out soon? I don't want to buy one and have a better one come out the next month.

There were some rumors a few months ago of a Kindle-branded tablet that would be more an alternative like the Nook Color rather than a replacement proper, but nothing has come of them yet. Past that, I don't think so. Between Kindle 1 and 2 was 15 months. Between 2 and 3 was 17 months. It's been not quite 7 months since the release of Kindle 3. Based solely on that a betting man might look to the end of this year or the beginning of next for a 4th generation.

I'm sorry to say this but ereader and tablets will converge into one device, it is inevitable.

Android functionality is a must or else the product is a waste, consider that people like me are not tired by lcd, crt, or any type of screen, epaper is unecessary, though it is welcome.

E-ink isn't going away if that's what you're implying. Far too many benefits.

Ereaders and tablets have *already* converged (iPad). The bottom line is there is no substitute for the eink screen.

My house has both a kindle and an iPad, and it's clear which is for reading books.

Right, there are many tablets already and all of them support e-reading. But e-ink is here to stay simply because its so much better for just reading its not a fair comparison.

Agreed, that is why I picked up a Kindle rather than go with something that doesn't have e-ink. My eyes can't handle reading off a screen for more than ten minutes, and it seems many people feel that way.

I've been finally reading through my first book on the Kindle which I got for Christmas. Skeptical at first, but now I am in love with it. E-ink is amazing.

My only complaint is the Emily Dickenson screensaver. It always pops up after a reading session late into the night. I swear, it's looking at me.

I just got an iPad 2 and don't have a need for my 3rd gen wi-fi only Kindle... What's the best option for selling it? eBay? I tried Craigslist but noone's buying.

The only thing on the horizon that would cause the "true" merging of tablets and e-reader is a hybrid screen like pixel qi. Hell knows if this will ever make it into a tablet anytime soon.

I love my kindle. But Qi has a screen that is extreme contrast lcd/oled tech. If the back light is completely off you can still see text, pictures and video. It might be the best route.

People have been reading books on portable devices since the early PDA days. The point of e-ink is that it's easy on the eyes and is still readable under direct sunlight. The battery also lasts longer.

Unnecessary? I've shown the Kindle screen to various people who hate staring at an LCD all day long and they almost hugged me for showing them how easy it is to read on an e-ink device. They're not going away anytime soon.
