American Idol Season 8 discussion thread

People may believe that this year, American Idol is the "ZOMG Adam Lambert Show" but that definitely isn't seen in the ratings:

Last night: 23.1 million (8.3/24).

Compare that with the final 2 performance of the past seasons:

* Season 5 - 32 million viewers - 12.3 rating/24 share <---my favorite season
* Season 6 - 25.3 million viewers - 9.7 rating/27 share
* Season 7 - 27.1 million viewers - 10.1 rating/28 share

With Adam practically "sealing the deal" on his future Idol crown by singing his last 3 songs (a formality, really), I was expecting last night's show to rival the Super Bowl @_@

But season 5 to 7 was 2 hours. Last time it was anywhere close to super bowl numbers was from season 2 to 5

In previous years I've only seen bits and pieces of AI, but this season I managed to sit through a few episodes, and I don't think Kris has a chance. Adam is the only contestant I've seen on the show that has absolutely grabbed my attention, both in vocal and stage performance.

Doesn't matter. Adam is God. They could have had a 10-minute long finale of Adam just sleeping and it should have had like 50 million people watching.
 
I really want to see some sales receipts from a few of the Adam supporters here the day his album releases. :lol


No one is going to buy this guys music. He's going to be such a huge flop.

Adam sells way way way more iTunes downloads of his songs than any of the other contestants.

Yes. But I am a bit biased towards him anyways via some personal connections.

I am just saying you can't throw out that claim of nobody will buy his music when he's already selling more music than any of the other contestants.

Yarp...this isn't a question really at this point. His itunes sales just dominate everyone elses by vast margins.

So, yes, people are putting their money where there votes are. Unlike the people voting for kris who don't care about his music but don't like adam (theatrical code word for 'gay'?).
 
Means nothing. Blake Lewis routinely beat Jordin (the eventual winner) in the sales of their iTunes performance tracks.

THEY'RE IN AN IDOL BUBBLE. Once they're out, it's a different ballgame, and I don't see Adam being as successful as people are predicting him to be. This happens every season. The "cool" contestant is supposed to sell a shit load of albums after Idol. And then, it never happens.

Season 1 cool contestant: Tamyra Gray
Season 2 cool contestant: *Ruben & Clay*
Season 3 cool contestant: LaToya London, Jennifer Hudson (went on to do other things)
Season 4 cool contestant: Bo Bice, Constantine
Season 5 cool contestant: Chris Daughtry (actually happened)
Season 6 cool contestant: Blake Lewis
Season 7 cool contestant: Michael Johns, Jason Castro, Brooke White
Season 8 cool contestant: Adam

The sales are hidden, and the tracks don't feed into the top 100 listing. There was a leak of sorts with the popularity bars being turned on for a day a few weeks ago, which gives the relative sales of each track, and the top was pretty much all Adam.

Also, the Ratings/Comments are a less solid measure of sales, but the numbers there overwhelmingly skew towards Adam. Numbers comparable to items in the Top Songs column.

I agree with MIMIC about the Idol Bubble, though. It is fair game once it's all over. I just think that with the right handling, Adam could become a huge fucking star. (Also gotta root for fellow San Diego theater alum :D )

Not to mention stuff like the fact that Adam's mad world actually pushed the Jules version into the top 10. One can only imagine more people downloaded adam's version.

People are buying his stuff. Mimic's list - I don't think itunes downloads started before last season so it isn't possible to know sales figures. Just because people think someone is "cool" doesn't mean they are downloading their crap (ref K. Allen and D. Karoke).

No. As previously stated the demonstrated download volume would indicate top 10 for significant periods of time for various performances.

fwiw, i think kris' sunshine should rank quite highly once its all said and done.
 
I'm ok with a Kris win. He does his narrow niche really well and he probably needs the AI win to help him establish himself within that narrow niche. /golf clap for him if he wins :D

Adam has higher heights to aspire to (and he might very well fail but the potential is there).
 
The "competition" portion of this show has been over for a long time now. It was over when everyone, including the judges pretty much crowned Adam the winner midway through the season. At this point, he has to win or its going to be a complete and utter embarrassment for both AI and Adam. This show has royally screwed him over and he doesn't even know it yet. They've set him up so unbelievably high that there is no way in hell that he'll meet expectations.

No, last years cool contestant was without a doubt David Cook and he won as he should have. The rest fit except Constatine, he was a joke contestant, one of those Dial the worst guys.

The amount of backpedaling going on right now is hilarious. I just saw some interviews with the judges backstage they are all like "oh I think they both deserve to win. Kris is a very worthy winner if he wins." They know its a huge possibility that Kris is going to win so they are trying to make it seem he is worthy (which I guess a bunch of you think so but whatever). Just last week I bet all of them felt Danny deserved to be in the finale and not Kris.

I'll be buying his music. I've gotten to the point where I think anyone who doesn't like Adam is a complete douche, plain and simple.

You guys just bring up some stupid ass points, over and over, when I know the kid is going to break records, and will become a legend, case closed. Mark my words.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't break Daughtry numbers with his debut.
 
IT'S ALMOST TIME! I can't believe they're going to make us sit through 2 hours of celebrity performances before telling us who won this thing. Ugh.
 
Someone else will write Adam's songs, and his success or failure will depend on that, NOT on his talent as a vocalist. His destiny was never in his hands to begin with in this competition. Welcome to the Grand Puppet Theatre that is American Idol, folks.
 
Who is the label signing the winner this time?

If its Jive then there's a chance the album might not suck. Barry Weiss always puts big money on album's productions. The Jordin Sparks record had some kickass electro-pop.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that Adam will want to have direct participation on the production of the album.
 
Allison deserved a longer solo on that song and wow at Jasmine. She might've gone further had there not be a double elimination.

Yeah, Alexis sounded really good. And she looks exactly like a girl I know, so I was always kinda rooting for her.
