American Idol Season 8 discussion thread

According to this FOX affiliate, out of the 100 million votes, 38 million came from Kris' hometown state of Arkansas @_@

AT&T says about 38 million American Idol votes came from Arkansas last night. Chances are, most of those came from Kris' home town of Conway. Hundreds turned out to watch Idol finale and the town seemed to erupt in cheers when Ryan Seacrest announced that Kris was the winner.

I kinda find that hard to believe....

ETA: Or maybe Kris DID win by a landslide. I'd be seriously shocked if he did.

I don't really watch AI but I saw it tonight with my family. Kris winning was kinda obvious. Singing these little lovely pop songs and country songs while the other guy was playing songs I think many of the younger voters don't care about.Queen, really? Most kids today have a queen phase in HS than move on. If this is how the two were portrayed all along than of course Kris won.
Popular music won tonight. 'shrug'
Some truth to the fact that Kris is more easily digestable. Unfortunately, thousands of artists are easily digestable.

I predicted this result last week when gokey got the boot (ironically i think adam wins if kris went home last week). The producers and media spent the greater portion of the season framing this ADAM VS. DANNY inevitable showdown and purposefully polarized the distinct fan groups. Well they succeeded and by doing so got neither of their choices :lol . Also, its REALLY bad to be a dominating front runner from even before finals started. Everyone wants Goliath to go down.

America is stupid but oh well.

That said, I'm really happy for kris. He (and adam) seems like the nicest guy and he does have some talent within a niche that has a bunch of other similar talent. Honestly after watching his duet with Urban he might want to try country...he blew Urban off the state IMO. Adam also seemed pretty damn happy for kris which is nice to see.

Adam had to sing down to Kris' level with Queen (he could have just blown him off the stage like Blige did to Yamin :lol) and actually managed to harmonize perfectly with Kris there near the end. I wasn't sure that was possible with their distinct voices!

Good luck to both going forward. I'll buy whatever adam puts out there and go see him in concert as long as it isn't some death metal thing and I'll probably pick up some Allen tunes for easy listening as well. And while people throw around "broadway" and "theatrical" as pejoratives (wtf?) I hope adam at some point does do broadway. I'd be first in line to buy a ticket for that. No reason he couldn't do both.

This.

If true then fuck that. Give him the Arkansas Idol trophy?

Normalize votes by state population imo

I am kind of curious what effect the no cost texting would have. Seems like there would have to be massive safeguards in place to prevent some sorts of abuse. Isn't it possible to set up text bots or whatnot?

Now I'm hearing that Kris DID win by a fucking lot....and Ryan noticeably failed to mention whether or not the vote was close (because they like to play up that shit)

Alabama came out strong for Ruben & Bo, and now Arkansas pwned them all with their homeboy.

How the fuck did the phone lines not explode?? I saw people saying they could not get through to vote last night, so how did 38 mil happen there?

LOL

further proof that this was a coalition of southern america wanting their home-boy to win then that gay broadway weirdo

Adam was interesting even if you don't like him and will get far more sales because of it.. he made the show interesting and deserved to win... people laughing cause they "told us so" (MIMIC) seem pretty childish...

in the end I could give a fuck, Adam will probably be successful, won't really matter to me, I don't listen to American Idol music...

I am just really bored honestly... (where the fuck is my breaking bad next episode!)

Faces filled with egg make me laugh...especially considering prior to the final 4.

Come on. 38 million votes out of 100 million from some tiny state? Thats either bad information or something is fucked up with the process.

I was kidding about normalizing by state population btw. But if 38 million did come from arkansas then they need to reassess their voting system.

My opinion is that the gay issue didn't affect Adam in the way that everyone thinks here.

Read the news about text message overages. What age range sends the most text messages? 13-16 year old girls. What is the hottest thing ever to these girls? Cute guys who sing mellow and play guitar over their knee. These young girls are more likely to send 39432490324 text message votes than the older viewers who seemed to favor Adam (for the most part). I had seem many of the older crowd compare him to Elvis. The young girls didn't necessarily go gaga over Adam because the gay glam rocker doesn't get them wet.

Kris is generic garbage. If he is to have a place in the music industry, it should be behind the scenes helping other artists with arrangements. He created some great arrangements, but his voice severely lacked. Adam is exciting.

Adam WILL be an icon. It's a shame he got screwed, but hey, Michael Jordan didn't make his high school basketball team.

You know, I bet there is some truth to this and could have been a deciding factor, but I doubt it's that extreme. I only voted once. I thought of voting more to counterbalance the same exact usage stated above, but went against it. Once is enough for me. I showed my support. It's more than I would have originally given, and I'm only one person. I'm not going to pretend that my voice matters more than anybody else's.

The gay issue could have had a bit to do with it too. I didn't think so initially because I never blog about the show or read other people's entries. Let alone articles off news sites, but looking back now... wow. I thought America was done with hate mongering. The photos that leaked out over the net, articles and editorials treating this as if it was an issue... some people are just vindictive by nature. Happens when you confuse humanity with religion. I don't think it's a gay issue per say. More a feminine issue. America loves to stereotype, and often is a key part in their decision making. Remember Ricky Brady from earlier in the season? I still can't figure out why he never cracked the Top 13, but, if true, this would explain it.

What we need is a gay contestant that doesn't live up to the stereotype with word only getting out once the finale is over. Now that would be delicious. Maybe someone from GAF should try out. :lol I'm sure we have plenty of talented singers, and GAF would not disappoint. You would have our full... dammit, I forgot the word. Whatevs, you'd have that and more. Oh wait, just remembered the word. SUPPORT! Yep, you'll have that... and stuff. Yeah...

God, I'm already bored and shit. American Idol has now become all serious and crap. This has nothing to do with a singing competition, and almost takes the fun away completely. :(

How does the american idol voting work?
Are people allowed to vote more than once?
I find it hard to believe 38 million votes came from Arkansas.
Arkansas has a population of about 2.9 million.
That's like everyone in the state voting 10 times each.

No limit. With text messaging votes you can vote as fast as you can text four digits and you'll never get a busy signal. Would seem highly prone to abuse.

wait, Adam lost?

I've sat through some shitty decisions America, but this is the final fucking straw.

Some person admitted to voting--texting--80,000 times (after estimating how many she could get in a single minute) for 4 straight God damn fucking hours.

lol?

I mean, just buy a win if that actually works. Get 500 such...uh...industrious workers and pay them $20/hr for 4hrs. 40 million votes costs a mere $40k. Hrmmmm. Not bad for an AI victory?

Also, text botting when stuff is free seems like it wouldn't be difficult.

o_O *mind boggled*

Let us Pray...

Father, who art in Heaven, hollowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come... fuck this shit,
Skewer this bitch NOW so she/he grows up fat, stupid, and ugly,
and for the sake of all things holy,
please be sterile.

A-MEN!

That victory speech was all kinds of awkward.
It's because he didn't think he'd win. He has been surprised for weeks now that he has been safe. And who can blame him? The judges have been nonchalant about him for a while if not downright negative while they've been boosting Adam and Danny's egos for ages.

I can't believe that people actually think Adam could be a rocker. I guess about as much as Donny Osmond. =P My coworker lives for the 80's glam rock/hair bands and he cant stand the dude.

She could be as smart as pumpkin pie, I'd still be compelled to run her over with a Vespa.

Also, she wrote "No Boundaries".

End of story.
Between her and someone whose comments I've found myself fastforwarding thru every single goddamn season since 2....hmmm Kara pls, thx.

The show wouldn't be nearly as fun without watching Simon's visual responses to Paula, not to mention his audio commentary.

As irritating as Kara is, Randy is the worst judge. He is utterly useless. The only real descriptive word in his vocabulary is "pitchy" and it's either "THAT ROCKED THE HOUSE, DUDE" if he liked it or "it didn't do much for me" if he disliked it. I channel flick when he's onscreen.

Simon is basically the only reason to tune in and Paula supplies him with snark material with her hilarious tirades, so at least she has some use.

I own 2 Kris Allen songs and 1 Adam Lambert one.

Mad World
Heartless and Apologize (fuck the haters, the song rules).

...so I guess I'm a massive hypocrite in the sales department on this one :lol

wow, good job America, and I thought you getting good at voting. This is a talent show and Adam was robbed, geez.

You wanna know why I hate Adam so much? Because every time he's up on that stage he defeats the purpose of this whole competition. I mean the fucker emerged as winner day 1, and deservingly so tbh, but it's gotta be so frustrating for the others.

And the judges (fucking Paula) doesn't waste time idolizing him. I don't care if he's that good, just be a little professional and don't squeak like an out-of-breath 12 y/o every time he's on stage.

I never even saw him seem worried once on result shows. The guy is just too good for this competition, seriously.

Go fuck yourself to sleep you loser.

Yeah this list is like a super brief snapshot of top sales. Not sure how that works exactly. The glee club thing (#1) has been around for a day?

Prolly a bunch of people downloading allen stuff trying to figure out how the fuck he won. :lol

Have to call bullshit on someone claiming 80k texts in 4hrs. Come on...thats like a text every .18 seconds. I'm on 3g and it takes a second or two for a text to "go". Now I'm not sure what computers could do with some simple software. I'm pretty sure I can send text messages via several different messengers without my cellphone.

I'd like confirmation of 38 million from one state. All this philosophizing about kris and why he won can just be simplified to inbred regionalism if its true.

I heard on the radio that Simon does not like the decision, says Adam deserved to win. I think his sitting protest showed that on the show. Watch this cause him to not return next year.

Kris Allen ruins American Idol. :P

I can't even remember how it goes. I've blocked it out of my mind.

I just think it's funny that she gushes over Adam singing her song, and then completely dismisses Kris' version. Must suck for her that its his first single :lol

And get ready for hearing that song on the radio for the next month.

This. 100x times. People are looking for bogeymen in this decision when it was fucking easy to call. My wife said he'd win four episodes back based on his cute looks alone; that the young girls of the country, the Titanic ones (you know what I'm talking about), would virtually guarantee him a victory.

And regarding the Christian bashing in here: Quit stereotyping. It's sick and makes you just as bad as the people you're attempting to demonize. Were there some people who likely didn't vote for Adam due to his homosexuality? Yeah, probably. But Christians aren't the only people who dislike homosexuality. Hell, my entire family that watches this show like crazy - about 20 in total - all voted for Adam. And they're all die-hard Christians. They said him being homosexual had no bearing on his talent. So fuck off with the hate.

There are likely just as many people who wouldn't vote for Kris since he's from Arkansas as there are ones who really based their vote on the homosexuality thing.

Wow, David Cook's Permanent song shot up from nowhere to #7 on iTunes Top 100. He did a good job singing it last night, I clicked and bought it just now.

Edit: Just noticed that because of the deluge of Adam Lambert and Kris Allen songs released at the same time, Idol contestants hold almost a third of the Top 100. That's a pretty incredible feat.
