America's Army 3 now available on Steam (free) (now playable)

The developers are pretty dumb IMO

Working on the game obviously wasn't fun, and since the game is free, the compensation isn't going to be that great either.

They should have just quit.

Wait, people here think the Army is trying to be sneaky or coy with this? Where have you been? Seems like I played the first AA like 5-6 years ago. And they weren't being shy about what it was back then either.

That said, downloading. I seem to remember liking the first one.

Dear lord, this game runs terrible. My E6600 @ 3.0GHz and GTX 275 combo can't quite maintain a 60fps in the obstacle course. :lol

I'm running at 1680*1050, maxed, of course. Game looks quite bad as well.

If it had Anti Aliasing it wouldn't be that bad, those jaggies can get out of control sometimes.

Well if it had AA and ran at 60fps, then it would look pretty good.

Anyways...39/40 targets is a fail? WTF?

Give it a while to register your completion, took 30 minutes for me to unlock the next training after I completed the first.

Switching to the steam version cause that other loader keeps trying to reinstall directx and punkbuster ever launch.

Is AA not DX10 only? Just a guess. BTW, don't try to force AA, or you get no HUD. Made combat life saving training hair rippingly frustrating before I figured it out.

Still not managed to have a game, training works flawlessly for me now though. I would have thought the load of the auth server would have been manageable by now.

The only thing tougher than finding a server that isn't like 29/26 players full, is getting to be the one marksman on your team after you find a server that you can actually join (after waiting 6 minutes for the match to end).

Once I waited long enough, finally the marksman spot opened up, and...the server disabled fireteam C completely, so no one could have any marksman slot. I'm NEVER going to get to snipe. :(

Oh, and like 1 out of 50 servers running actually uses PunkBuster, so I don't have problems using it on Windows 7. At least the lack of AA doesn't make my video card heat up too much!

Some gameplay impressions:

-Bullets ricochet off some surfaces. Very cool to see, not sure if they can still injure you or not.
-There is bullet crack, and the sound design in general is very, very good.
-Guns can jam (rarely).
-You can heal injured teammates. If they're incapacitated, you need to match the treatment to their condition (one of four options) and they can be revived if you get it right. Injuries like gun shot wounds can be treated to preserve remaining HP and keep the person from bleeding out. Too many wounds and a person may only be stabilized, not revived. Injuries are locational and can affect your movement speed.
-You can customize your gear to some extent. Overall weight affects movement speed, and you can choose a light, standard, or heavy loadout (number of clips and grenades). Completing unlockable advanced training modules allows you to, for example, choose an ACOG scope as a marksman or an M4 (with full auto functionality) as rifleman. Space for a lot more to be added later, just the first tier of unlocks is currently available. Also several more spots on the gun rails for more upgrades, not available yet.
-Grenades are very powerful and can injure you from pretty far away if you're standing up, they're cookable, and you can throw them overhand or underhand. No problems with grenade spam so far, tough to aim and dangerous for all involved. Note: there's an achievement for diving on a grenade to sacrifice yourself and save the lives of your teammates.
-One marksman per team, and the marksman is the only class at the moment with the ability to use a scope (4x ACOG unlocked by advanced training module). You can choose between iron sights and red dot for all the guns.
-Teamwork is inherently beneficial since everyone can revive/heal, and you get negative points for killing a neutralized opponent (making it more likely to be revivable by a teammate later).
-You can slide into cover or jump into prone from a sprint, and the leaning is done realistically (so leaning while prone turns you). Also combat rolls and vaulting over obstacles/cover.
-You have crosshairs while firing normally, but they're only for close quarters (<20 feet or so). Iron sights or red dot sight are necessary for most engagements.
-You have a hold breath button to steady your aim, and this plays a big part in the shooting.

I really dig the core gameplay mechanics. The guns feel great, the matches play out very interestingly most times, and lots of folks were using voice comm (which is very high quality). If they can iron out the damn server problems I could see myself playing this for a long, long time.
You really missed out when this game was first released if you are just now playing it. I couldn't justify buying raven shield because AA was just better.

Right i can load the game up now.

However, everytime i go to try the next training after basic rifleman, game just hangs and computer locks up.

Can't even get into the server browser, either, and my system is pretty up to date.

Expert marksman is a PAIN to get. 100% accuracy won't get it for you, either. I've gotten 1085 and 1090 scores, but I keep missing one or two targets randomly...

Shitty Unreal Engine 3.

Of course, that didn't stop AA in Mirror's Edge.

Can't you trick the game into enabling it by renaming the .exe to Bioshock.exe or UT3.exe and forcing it in the corresponding title in your drivers?

Works with most other UE3 games. What's with the UE3 hate anyway? Its a great engine on the PC, with loads of customisation available to the end user as well.

Every time I load this up something different happens. Sometimes it freezes when I select a server and hit join. Sometimes it cycles through the different loading screens for minutes on end without ever getting into the game. Sometimes the training would render the map but not the character models and just freeze on the first frame.

And every server is 12/10 or 22/20, what does this even mean?

EDIT: I finally got into a game but EVERYONE WAS IN SPECTATOR and couldn't join a team. Wtf.

All of them seem to be doing this now. I almost creamed when I thought I was finally going to play.

Bloody game, why am I still trying.

Excellent. Will break out the SAW in those underground concrete hallways in Ranch next time :D

I was devastating the other team with the SAW on the Bridge. Devastating. So many negative points for clapping people I already neutralized though :lol

I may just delete this game when I reinstall windows 7, but I should in all fairness mention the sound design like Evillore (or someone else) already said.

The voicechat actually sounds really good. It even seems to work after the round ends, when the menu is up, and so on. I don't think I ever really had trouble understanding someone using it either. I think there's probably a way to mute people too, but I didn't have to use it.

As for the other sounds, I feel like they did quite a good job, except possibly for actual shot sounds. The regular machine/submachine guns just make little "chunk" sounds when they fire. I actually like it since I don't like loud noises, but it doesn't feel very powerful.

Other weapons are probably good though (it's weird that the army apparently hasn't invented pistols yet). In particular, I LOVE how they did the grenade launcher, where if you launch a grenade far enough away, you can literally see the explosion and then hear the sound like half a second later because of the distance. When people talk in the training or ingame, the sound has a decent directional quality, even on my cheap headphones. You can tell that there are people upstairs on the other team, or guys around the corner, or whatever. You can get a "feel" for "oh, there's heavy weapon fire near the bridge, let's head around in that direction".

There's also decent ambient sound, like occasional crows on the ranch, and so on.

Most soldiers don't get one. They were in AA2 for snipers though, so we may see them again when they bring snipers into this version.

Well, snipers are in there in a way, with the SDM. What was more annoying was that the server I was on kept giving me only ONE rifle grenade when I was grenadier, even if I picked the heavy loadout.

Also, is there any way to trigger that overlay that shows how many grenades/clips etc. you have left? I'm assuming there's no way of showing bullets left in your clip, but seeing that overlay would be nice occasionally. It always vanishes shortly after appearing.

Yeah I'm not sure. Might be a realism thing, but I know on the MOUT course I got in the habit of reloading my mag during downtime. It's cool too that the last shot sounds different, as you would expect.

I have not once ever loaded up one of the training courses yet when I logged in just now it showed that 4 were complete. Awesome, maybe I can use grenades now :lol

Settings > Interface > change Equipment and Weapons from "Contextual" to "Always On".

Part of the difficulties we've all been seeing stems from the large number of training missions being run with everyone trying to save their results. This is putting a sizable strain on the Authentication servers. We have a plan to temporarily improve this situation.

Within the next couple of hours we'll be updating everyone's statistics to indicate all training levels have been passed. This will allow you to enter a server and enjoy the full range of Soldier weaponry and abilities.

However, for this to have the greatest effect, we need your help...

Please do not engage in any training missions. Doing so will defeat the purpose of what we are trying to accomplish in the short term, which is to get everyone playing. If this initiative is successful, you'll be able to enjoy multiplayer gaming while we can work at long term solutions.

Once again, please, DO NOT engage in any training missions, but feel free to join a multiplayer server.

Also, please note that if you are kicked from a server, it’s probably due to the server being full. With so many players trying to join at the same time, the number of players in a server may not be accurate. Just try joining another server.

I finally got into a server again - apparently I can't use grenades still, even though the training shows as passed. That particular one originally said I had failed, but like 10 hours later it acknowledged it. Probably have to do it again, but now I can't get into any training again (and it seems I shouldn't be trying).

I tried AA when it first came out, but had some problem completing the training (heh...) and couldn't get online, so I uninstalled and it had been completely off my radar since then.

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I got 99% headshot with the acog training and the game freezes right as im about to check my score........
Opps i shouldnt have been training.

I'm probably the biggest AA head around these parts but RavenShield shat on it from a great height.

Not how I remembered it. Scores for both games were very close and there were a lot of rainbow six fans that were upset because RS wasn't as hardcore as the previous rainbow games.

Bah, yesterday AA didn't save my training results and if I tried loading a mp game, it kicked me back at the menu when it was almost finished.

Now my training results have been modified, but everytime I try to start a training or mp game, nothing happens. The game just locks and I can't do anything.

Just a heads up.

AA3 doesn't seem to want to start up for me in steam. Whenever I double click it in steam it says "preparing to launch game" and then quickly disappears without launching anything.

Using the SAW can be extremely satisfying. Man. Was playing some Impact and suppressive fire allowed teammates to advance, nade, and/or pick off enemies several times, and against open targets I was a force to be reckoned with.

Turn corner, see guy with SAW in front of you, reenact unlucky guy from Robocop.
