Amount you spend on a car?

None, I like not having a payment.

When my civic broke I bought a 1.5k 97 VW Golf and now I'm about 3k from purchasing a recent Prius or an 06 RSX if I'm feeling foolish. I just don't want payments, I hate them. Plus I fancy sound system over anything and it doesn't cost much to get that.

Never. Ever. Lease.
Don't Leases tend to cost almost as much as buying the Car (Like 75%), but you have to give the car back? How much was the Lease on your last vehicle?

Buy used, and no more than a few months' pay, including a small amount set aside for possible repair costs (so somewhere in the region of $10k, give or take).

Ideally I'd spend less, if I can find something that's suitable enough. I'm currently running a '97 Taurus that I paid $1200 for about four years ago (had 40k on the odometer at the time), and other than insurance and maybe an average of $500 in repairs and maintenance each year (broken sensor, leaky transmission pan) it's been great. I'll likely drive it until it dies...which, given that it's a Taurus of that era, probably isn't far off.

Damn I'd be livid if I spent $2000 repairing and maintaining a $1200 Taurus. At least it was cheap upfront.

A good chunk of that was buying new tires when I originally picked up the car, as the ones that were on there hadn't held up well (the old woman I bought it from had basically let it sit in a carport for five years).

But yeah, if I hadn't gotten it so cheap I would have been more annoyed.
