Japanese is a race? Wow, never knew. I thought it was an ethnicity.

It actually is an offensive term.

I live about 60 miles away from one of the ex-Japanese relocation camps during WWII.

It's one of the most taboo words around here.

That word was really only used negatively in America during WWII and no where else so I don't think that many native Japanese even realize it was used offensively. And I don't think Japanese Americans don't really care for the most part anymore.

wait.... "Jap" is racist?
Only to ****tards.

.... here is the acid test :

1. Come to Japan
2. use the word "Jap" a lot
3. enjoy wonderful warm happy feeling of Japanese people !*

Should have used a period! Jap. is way less racist than Jap!

I'm so much less offended because of your thoughtful punctuation! Good illustration that offense results from intent, not from combinations of letters.

I find it offensive when people take offense where clearly none is intended. But of course, since it's not related to race or any other hot-button topics, no one bans people who offend my sensibilities.

BTW using JP or JPN clearly identifies you as a dork to any non-JPNophile.

Then "Yank" should be added to that list. I've seen it used with negative connotation many times. Anyways "jap" isn't a negative slur anymore. I don't know one single person that has a racism against japanese people in good old Ohio. Jap is just an abbreviated way of saying japanese in modern american culture.

Wrong. Your little corner of 'good old Ohio' isn't the entire US, and believe me, there are still a great many people of Japanese descent in this country who take offense at being referred to as 'Japs'. People need to try showing a little respect and stop being such lazy bastards - typing out 'Japanese' is a whole five extra keystrokes, and it has the added benefit of not making you sound like a racist asshole.

Can a Japanese like myself use it?

And "Gaijin" (an outsider) is not a racial slur per se, just not "politically correct".
"Gaikoku-jin" (person from a foreign land) would be a more appropriate term,
but come on, the extra cyllables!!!

GAI-JIN is much shorter to say it. And so is JAP.

Anyways, to the subject, nice arubaito gig there for the man.
And :lol at the photoshops.

It has a negative connotation for a lot of people in the US because it was basically used like a racial slur around WWII and maybe before I'm not sure (i.e "I hate all those japs") I don't use it.

didnt know that...

I wonder if he has to KALOOMPAH every customer.

It wasn't just used offensively in the WWII period but in the half decade even before then when the Japanese were coming to California and other parts of America. It's about as respectful as the terms gook, chink, flip, etc. I.e. very disrespectful.

Oh, but it's not racist!
yeah, because context and intent have nothing to do with it...

In Japanese dictionaries, the term "Jap" is only defined as a disparaging term used against the Japanese people, like it is the case in many English language dictionaries.

stupid japs, they get upset about anything.

He probably gets all kinds of Jap pussy.

I propose anyone who doesn't find this stuff necessary to use it around the people in question. It's just begging for an ass whooping.

the funniest thing i've ever heard was when i went back home about 4 years ago

i bumped into a guy i know and he asked if i had a girlfriend.

me : "yeah, been seeing this japanese-portuguese girl for a few years now"
him : "oh really... dating a Jap huh? can i ask? Does she have a hairy pussy and is it sideways?"

....

i mean... wtf?
if i said "i'ms eeing a girl from manchester" he MIGHT have said "dating a Manc huh?" (which is in no way similar) but i suspect the follow on questions wouldn't have come.

... anyways, carry on.

Jap is offensive, just as offensive as the "N" word.
Nigger.
If some of you think just because you're on the internet it's appropriate to use, you're wrong.
Try saying that to someone from Japan or of Japanese heritage.

Having a grandfather who barely survived an Atomic bomb in WW2,
I take great offense to it. (If he didn't survive, I wouldn't be born.)

The only reason we don't find it offensive is that we were brought up on the term in general use along the same context as how 'Japanese' is used because that's what our parents and grandparents used to describe them (in the past with particular racial overtones). Although we should be at the age now where we see that there is offense that can be taken and adjust accordingly.

Continued off topic: Remember kids, if it offends somebody else, it doesn't matter if it offends you. Adjust your communication style accordingly and show a little respect.

I agree that when speaking publically a sensible person should adjust their communication rather than require the whole world to figure out their personality and the intentions behind their words and whether they are kind or not. However, knowing that intent actually changes the definition of what is being expressed, there should be grace for those ignorant of the connotations of the words they use.

Did he know it was an offensive word? If not, then yes, that's exactly what it's like.

Well being banned will warn him and others not to use the term while posting on GAF.
We shouldn't even be having this conversation.

People will be offended by all sorts of silly things. Try to not step on people's toes until you meet the group of people who are offended by the word "the." The rule of thumb you stated is completely absurd.

The context and implied connotation are what truly matter. Words cannot be offensive, only the way they're used or interpreted. People who are offended by a word regardless of the user's intentions or context are morons.

I'd just like to apologize to anyone who was offended by what I said, I definitely did NOT know it was a racial slur and definitely did NOT mean any offense by it.
