Let's make him a little chubby, too.

I approve of this.

Why does it have to be Spider-Man? Is it because he's already seen as kind of effeminate for a superhero?

Why can't Superman be gay? Or Wolverine? Those would be cool comics.

Are you saying that they'd be cooler because the characters would be gay?

Also why does gay = effeminate?

Apollo is an official alternate Superman. Similarly, Midnighter and Batman. Do they absolutely have to be the mainstream versions? :P

oh. what. black people as a power source...oh shit. it finally hit. me.

It is usualy more related to water as a weakness, that is why we also have a huge number of black cyborgs.

It aparently comes from the believe that black people can't swim O.o

Why not? well in my opinion the character was created as a heterossexual so don't change that, if you wanna play a homossexual super hero well just ask marvel or dc to create one, just leave the existent ones alone don't change them...

no it doesn't, you've been believing too many gaf threads. it's about racism and slavery. Platy. If that is even your real name.

So if they're ok with that, fine. But one is certainly more of a change than the other.

And yes I know that's the incidental, practical reality, but the fact that that is the mental reality for a lot of people is just gross.

I couldn't agree more. Discussions like this really bring out the weird xenophobia that still exists even in normally rational, and probably open-minded people.

Definitely. I think we can all agree that early Batman is the best Batman.

Although I think it would make sense if they made an alternate/multi-verse Spider-Man who is gay and have his/her adventures.

I don't agree that the struggles of being a young person loving someone you can't have is something that's exclusive to heterosexuals at all.

The "lol"s totally mask your backpedaling though, so you should definitely stick with it.

Backpedaling? Because of your lack of reading comprehension? I would like for you to quote where I said "young person loving someone you can't have is something that's exclusive to heterosexuals". That's right, you can't.

Spiderman swings around town in a leotard, shooting a sticky white substance at things while making sassy comments.

He can't be gay.

They already casted Mary jane.

Actually, they cut all of her scenes from the next movie and it's unclear weather she'll be in part three.

As for weather or not they should do it, why not? There's already been a ton of different interpretations of Peter, why not a gay or bi one? Hell, Peter in the comics right now isn't even Peter!

Isn't part of the overall character of Spider-Man about the nerdy teenage boy in love with the popular high school girl? This is a pretty important theme..

As a gay male I can relate to that. Why can't straight people relate to it if it's a nerdy teenage guy in love with the popular high school guy? The theme stays the same, it's just the gender that changes.

It annoys me when they change a character just because they can, I mean it's one thing if it's a new spiderman, but why Peter Parker? The guy already has pathos out the ass.

It may never happen but Andrew's commentary on the topic really inspired joy in me. Very cool.

Anyway as a gay person I agree that we don't need a gay spider-man... even if it would be interesting to me. We also don't need a black spider-man (even though marvel hacked their way around that one...)

What we need are more ORIGINAL gay and black characters. Let's not change existing characters. That's a disservice to minority groups.

All these "quota" arguments don't make any sense. This isn't a) happening or b) being suggested by a committee.

It's the actor himself talking to people on the set about whether it'd make his character more interesting.

It's not a focus-grouped, cynical decision being forced upon the character by a group of suits who are looking for a gold star from a political activism group. The White-Knight analog doesn't apply here.

It's an actor, playing a role, discussing with his co-workers a possible avenue for that character to go in the fictional universe they've created.

The "Quota" line of argument doesn't really fit here.

Although I think it would make sense if they made an alternate/multi-verse Spider-Man who is gay and have his/her adventures.

That's what the films are, essentially. They certainly don't take place in the same shared universe as the comics.

Any filmed adaptation of a superhero is essentially an elseworlds/what-if take on the character.

making gay characters for the sake of having more gay characters does not make good characters

make a character gay because it makes a better character not because it fills a quota

In what circumstance does making a character gay make it better? People aren't arguing that it's better or worse, just that it shouldn't matter.

Why not? well in my opinion the character was created as a heterossexual so don't change that, if you wanna play a homossexual super hero well just ask marvel or dc to create one, just leave the existent ones alone don't change them...

I agree. Part of why I like Spider-Man is because he has Mary Jane. I don't think I could enjoy him if he was gay. There's nothing wrong with them making another character. But I think Andrew Garfield doesn't really appreciate that nor understands why a lot of heterosexuals love Mary Jane and Peter Parker's relationship.

Spiderman can't be gay.

If they want a gay Superhero, they should make a new one.
This is the worst argument that could ever be made. This is like saying that parents are right to ostracize their kids because of their preconceived notions of how their children were supposed to be.

The argument that "well, he's always been straight so he should stay that way" is also very flawed, since that's the same reason plenty of men stay in loveless marriages after discovering their sexual identity in their 30s.

Being a fictional character doesn't matter, as it's only really used to mask a bias behind the guise that we get the right as consumers of someone else's vision to dictate what it is or becomes.

They should just do this with a new character. I hate when back stories and personalities of fictional characters are changed drastically for newer adaptations just for the sake of being different.

It would come across to most people as publicity stunt. Peter Parker was created as a straight teenage male obsessed with females. It's an integral part of his spiderman persona.

If Marvel/DC want a gay superhero, then they should just create a new one. Don't retcon an established hero just for the sake of it.

So there is time to reshoot the scenes and turn Mary Jane into a pre-op transgender men ?

Does the Mary Jane actress look good with fake beard and short hair ? =D

no it doesn't, you've been believing too many gaf threads. it's about racism and slavery. Platy. If that is even your real name.

It ... it ... is not my real name ='(

Let's make Iron Man a Jamaican Republican. Wolverine a spanish disco dancer. Captain America North Korean. Why? Why not???????? Nothing wrong with change!!

All of this social justice is dumb, Spiderman being gay wouldn't even be interesting he would just kiss dudes.

Funny thing is Marvel and DC have many guy heroes.

I'm all for equality, but seriously screw that. I want him boning chicks just like Tony Stark. I just can't get into to it. I mean there's always been that line that's drawn just like when curtains were drawn just before a sex scene. I just don't want to watch it unfold like that. And not after artist have made MJ look as fine as she's always looked. She has a whole persona to her and Parker goes after that.

Edit: I probably don't care. I don't spend a lot of money on comics like I used to.

It's easy to say "just make a new gay hero" because that a) keeps the status quo with the fictional characters you care about and b) lets you off the hook for supporting that new hero.

New superheroes typically don't stick. Mostly because the 150-200k comic book readers aren't reading superhero comics for "new" things.

Saying "make a new superhero" can come off as a way of saying "Make something I can easily ignore."

That's pretty straightforward, I guess.
