I agree with this. The X10 feels like a toy, seriously. It's completely plastic, and not the high grade kind either. It feels so flimsy compared to the N1. Still a good device, though.

I've got the white one, looks and feels beautiful. I've used up all the office clean wipes on it though. :lol Horrible to see that perfection ruined with smudges. With the slick clean interface, it blows away the other handsets in looks. Multitouch has never bothered me as I always use it one handed anyway (HTC Hero keyboard hack FTW!).

In other news Log Me In beta is now out in the market. http://phandroid.com/2010/05/06/logmein-says-me-too-enters-private-beta-with-ignition/

My iPhone has decided to break now for the 4th time and I really can't be sending it off for repairs only for it to break again.

The desire has caught my eye since the release and I was strongly considering upgrading to it. After I saw the evo 4g I thought I will wait and buy that but I realized its not coming out in the UK.

Would it still be an awesome upgrade if I go with the desire in the middle of may or should I wait and check out the new iPhone? I don't even know if they are releasing a competitor for the new iPhone like the evo 4g over here... I am in pretty desperate need of a new phone :D

I think the only real edge the new iphone is going to have over the Desire is that resolution/screen...which I can't wait to see. Everything else seems meh. iPhone OS4 doesn't seem too impressive (albeit I'm not a fan of iOS) and the hardware, while improved, doesn't seem to be a spectacular jump from what we've seen. Also, the Desire has that bigger screen which is nice.

But like you said, I think the Evo is going to blow both of them out of the water.

If you've never used Android (with Sense!), I suggest you go to a retailer and play with a desire/legend and try it out. If you like it go with a Desire, if you're not blown away or would need more time with it, wait until June to see if the iPhone impresses you and if not then pick up the Desire then, it's a big upgrade

Gah, as normal I can never decide when it comes to purchasing new phones.

I've had the Sony Ericsson K770 for 2 years now and want my first "smartphone" as they seem to be a lot better. Right now they are all very expensive for my student budget here in Sweden but going to get one with a subscription plan i think. But I can not decide between going with the Desire now or waiting for the new Iphone. Is there a releasedate confirmed for the Iphone even? What would you all go with?

Desire, in an instant (in fact that's what I have right now). Apple are just too damn anti-developer and anti-consumer for my liking right now. Everything has to be done the Apple way, and screw you if you don't like it. I'll go with the more open choice, thank you very much.

Android 2.2 'Froyo' and Flash run like butter on Nexus One (video)

Flash on Android...blah, blah, blah

...LOOK AT THE LAUNCHER!!!
Two more icons can be added to it!!! I see Phone and Browser~ :D And what's up with that widget and the little droid?

i dont even remember what the stock home looked like, i use helixlauncher, which allows for 4 icons on the bottom, and i can't go back. :( I need more then 2 icons!

that being said, holy shit flash looks so freaking smooth

Looks like a tutorial for new users. Stock search widget now has some sort of dropdown on the left, maybe for different searchsite options (Bing, ha) or to filter search results (Images, News, etc.). Launcher bar at bottom has phone and browser launch icons now.

Oh god 2.2 needs to get here! Looks amazing. I also like the new ability to put two new icons on the home screen. I'm going to really be looking forward to the little refinements and enhancements to be discovered. Good Flash implementations don't hurt either!

To keep this somewhat on-topic, I hope to see a lot of hardware features that are inactive on the Nexus One begin to be enabled with this software. Color LED Notification support and possible FM Radio to start.

The LG Ally will be a full on Google experience but will also offer a touch of LG and Verizon, too. The carrier has opted to integrate Visual Voicemail and V CAST Media Manager while LG has preloaded their own Socialite widget which, you guessed it, loads twitter and Facebook updates.

The meat and potato specs:

  • Qualcomm MSM7627 600MHz processor
  • Memory: 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM
  • 3.2- inch touch display (800 x 480 Pixels)
  • Android 2.1 OS; Google Experience Device
  • Slide-Out QWERTY Keyboard
  • 3.2 megapixel with Autofocus, Flash
  • 3.5mm Headphone Jack
  • 4GB microSD
  • Wi-Fi, S-GPS, aGPS
  • Visual Voice Mail Capable
  • Dimensions: 4.56″ (H) x 2.22″ (W) x 0.62″ (D)
  • Weight: 5.57 oz.
  • Up to 450 mins talk time, 500 hr standby time

Verizon really does have the whole array now. Two superphones, one with keyboard (Droid) and one without (Droid Incredible), and now two middlers, one with keyboard (Ally) and one without (Droid Eris).

Amazing to me that a year ago this would have been one of the higher-end smartphones on the Market, and would definitely blow the G1/Magic out of the water. Would have blown some minds Verizon is getting it too.

To me this is more proof that Verizon will not be getting the iPhone any time soon. They seem to be promoting the Android Market on their own. Google must be giving them some incentive. They alone will be pushing Android in the USA where I thought it would never be. That and how Samsung is doing 50% of their smartphones on Android. Good times.

Edit:

But then there is this: http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/05/1...king-on-upcoming-iphone-campaign-for-verizon/

:lol

June will be a very interesting month.

fine by me if Verizon gets the iphone, get some of these bandwidth hogs off of my network! You'll see Verizon slowly decline in quality if they get a mad rush of people buying/upgrading from nothing to them

Pretty much the game-changer for me. I have had 3 iPhones. Now I think I'll need something running android 2.2.

Good show. The launch of legit flash on Android will be the shot heard 'round the world.

We'd been hearing rumors lately that HTC's Droid Eris -- a phone that has never quite made it out from under the Droid's shadow -- is in the midst of being discontinued by Verizon, but the imminent launch of an Android 2.1 update might just buy it a new lease on life. In fact, the update makes this phone just about the first Hero variant anywhere in the world to be graced with an upgrade to Google's latest and greatest stuff, beating Sprint's version thanks to a string of delays that have pushed it out to some unidentified period in the second quarter. We've yet to see any reports of folks actually receiving the update notification on their devices, but Verizon's official support Twitter account is tweeting about the upgrade -- which should fix numerous bugs on top of the hotly-anticipated Eclair boost -- so we'd expect it to start hitting the wild shortly.

Woot! This should cut a significant chunk of 1.5 out and add it to the 2.1 part of the platform chart. :D Hopefully the Sprint and international variations of the Hero get it before long, too.

I was gonna ask again today when the Hero update is gonna go out. Looks like soon, though I'm not holding my breath. Ive been running this ROM but would prefer the real thing since there are some bugs in the ROM. PEACE.

I think it must be a problem on Sprint's end. They can't even do OTA right, so rolling out a huge update like 2.1 must be causing problems.

As soon as most people are on 2.1, Android will be one hell of a platform. Fix the fragmented problem and Google will have one hell of an OS on their hands.

lol, 2.2 will probably be out next week.

It seems like each day brings us a small step closer to the inevitable launch of Google's next iteration of their mobile operating system, Android 2.2 (aka Froyo). Just yesterday, we reported what seems to be the first picture of Froyo's homescreen, along with the new features that it seems to bring. Today, some more excitement has been brought to our attention.

For the past week, Android Police has been privileged to have a Nexus One running Android 2.2 with full Flash 10.1 support in their possession. The site plans to release video footage of the new OS, but in the meantime, has left us salivating over the few details they've decided to share.

The most fascinating tidbit of information is in reference to the performance boost that 2.2 brings over 2.1 (aka Eclair). Using the new JIT (just-in-time) compilation in its kernel, Froyo seems to perform 450% faster than Eclair. On the Linpack benchmark test, a Nexus One running 2.1 managed a score of 6.5 to 7 MFLOPS. Compared to the HTC Hero, which scored a 2, that may look pretty darn good. However, if you compare it to a Nexus One running Froyo, you'd probably have to double check your numbers before believing what you'd see. Android 2.2 managed a score of 37.5 MFLOPS. This means that without a single hardware improvement, Froyo delivers a whopping 450% speed boost to an Android handset.

Knowing this information, we can now understand how the latest release of the Android OS is able to run Flash 10.1 as smoothly as it does. It also explains why Adobe waited to implement it in this specific version. Pushing a full version of Flash on the Android platform prior to Froyo would probably not have delivered respectable performance. With the tweaks Google has seemed to implement, Android plus Flash is looking like a deadly combo.

And I'm still waiting for 2.1 :(

So how long will it take for the HTC Incredible to get 2.2 on Verizon?

I'd just keep watch on the XDA developer's forum once 2.2 rolls out. It's bound to be out in a couple of days at most.

I'm guessing at the very earliest it's after Google I/O.

Does anyone use thise Iphone 'sock' protective things to store their androids? I'm worried as weather gets warmer my baby might overheat. Thermal heat death vs scratches. :|

lol, no. Droid doesn't do ipod socks. It's not a iPhone with a plastic scratch magnet back.

Is HTC notorious for taking a while?

The leap to 2.1 was the first time a big upgrade was necessary, and yes, they've taken a while. Other companies have taken longer, but I'm pretty sure we can chalk this up to being a learning experience for all the manufacturers involved. Googles making upgrading easier, manufacturers learned the ropes, it shouldn't be bad moving forward.

But the general consensus is anything that's been customized will take longer, and Sense UI is very customized.

Salaadin said:

well its HTC combined with the operators. 2.1 should have been the last update that needs a lot of operator testing as it will be breaking out the included apps. I'm sure there will be a concerted push to get things like droid/incredible, desire, and the other high end/high install base phones to 2.2 asap. Internal operator testing should be decreased dramatically with only having to test the OS and a small subset of apps instead of what was in 2.1. Just disheartening that they finally are going to be hitting a vast majority of devices with 2.1 (shitty sprint lagging) and 2.2 will be released.

It's not looking like 2.2 will be a big structural change (similar to 1.5->1.6, it's just adding features), but who knows.

When is the Nexus Two coming? If I buy an Android phone it’s going to be a Google one.

If it would, I would say it would come later (as in, a year after the N1). But the N1 didn't go over so well, despite however Google wants to spin it. I don't know. They might try to get a N2 on every network and better work on the roadmap so that there isn't a better phone than the N2 on every network coming out a month later like what just happened, they might just make one GSM unlocked version, or they might nix it all together. Who knows.

I actually really like stock Android compared to any variations, including Sense. I would go with a stock Android Google phone, but wouldn't dedicate myself to the Nexus brand. The Droid has blown me away and I know it's follow up, be it Shadow or a different project, will be just as kick ass.

A say they should at least give users on GSM networks the option of buying the "Google Phone". I think is worked rather well, because Google has been able to use the Nexus as a benchmark for Android, and use the phone as the developer's device. They seemed to not be losing money on the sales side of it either.

I rather have the Google vision of what Android should be than anything else, faults and all.

Jesus christ, the pixel density on that screen is *ridiculous.*

Damn. Trying to jump straight into the Android vortex is becoming a bit complicated (especially for a bastardized AT&T user like myself).

My wife has an iPhone and I've been hoping for a respectable AT&T Android device for awhile now. The promises of a HTC solution are a bit worrying as there hasn't been many updates on the matter for quite awhile.

I guess my concerns lie with the cost of another data plan in addition to my wife's for her iPhone, and which carrier will have the best hardware, as well as losing our free calling to one another and her family if I jump ship.

Is there any relatively viable options for someone like myself wanting to jump aboard the Android bandwagon?

Just got a Cliq XT for free; T-mobile's scheme pulled me in.

First smart phone here; interface is a bit sluggish and the screen is a bit small, which makes keyboard usage a pain.

Need to figure out how to crack it open.

Isn't there an ATT version of the Nexus One? I recall reading about it a while back.

As far as I know, there's only the Aero and the Backflip, both of which don't seem to promising.

There's a future HTC device rumored to be released this summer, but news has been scarce.

You can buy an unsubsidized Nexus One that will work with AT&T 3g networks. Also, they are rumored to be (possibly) getting the HTC Desire.

Really...hmm. I'm sure they're expensive, right?

Also, do OTA firmware updates, apps and those sorts of things work?

You buy a Nexus and your OTAs upgrades will not be done by AT&T but through Google.
As soon as Froyo (2.2) is release I will be getting the update. No need to wait for T-mobile.

I'm pretty sure you can get the HTC Magic (Rogers) unlocked which works with ATT and 3G. HTC Magic is the myTouch in the USA by T-Mobile, but don't grab their version because you'll be stuck using EDGE, if that matters. Plus the Rogers version has more RAM vs the T-Mobile.

I think the HTC Magic goes for $150-400 on ebay unlocked.

disclaimer: I'm an unabashed sprint fanboy. that being said:

If you're looking at a good android device, I don't think you're going to see it on AT&T anytime soon. IIRC they declined to subsidize the nexus one, and crippled the backflip with proprietary software. This can't be an accident- despite being the #2 carrier they have the worst selection of non-apple smartphones.

Personally, I'd jump ship to Sprint or another carrier. for new customers, there's a 59.99 everything plan that gives you unlimited mobile to mobile for all phones no matter the network, unlimited nights and weekends start at 7 for all other calls, and all data and texts are included. that should compensate for all the calls to your wife and family you can stand. Top that off with Sprints far superior 3G network and ability to roam voice on verizon for free and it's a pretty solid plan.

no matter which way you slice it you're not getting anywhere near that deal on AT&T, and the Evo is due out in about a month- far and away the best android phone due out this year.

just my two cents.
