The new T-Mobile myTouch™

Motorola DEFY

Both seemingly coming with Wifi calling.
On both the “new myTouch” and Motorola Defy product pages on T-Mobile.com it completely confirms that Wi-Fi calling of some nature lives and on Android. While we don’t know the extend of the details on how exactly this will work, we’ve had enough hints and teasers that this is a reality so it’s nice to see some real deal confirmation.

gah the backlighting on my G1 just gave out! Man I'm pissed since I didn't want to get a new phone yet and I don't want to spend money repairing the G1.

So right now I'm trying to looking for a used phone on craigslist and I've been looking for an HD2 so I can install Froyo on it.

Are there any other noteworthy Android phones that I should consider which perform much better than the old G1?

Every other android phone ever released.

Jokes aside, what's your budget? Look out for... the nexus one or the vibrant if you can get them on the cheap. If not, go the HD2 route.

Hiya folks, I've been pondering jumping on the Android bandwagon as my dumbphone is starting to give up the ghost and the fruitphone 4 doesn't sound very appetizing. Been looking out for Nexus Ones but I can only find them used (I'm on Fido in Canada and all the new ones aren't on that frequency) .

Recently Fido starting offering the Acer Liquid E and it looks like a decent enough device, is there anything I should know about it before I grab one instead of visiting craigslist every day?

Best android phone on Sprint? Still Evo?
I prefer the Epic personally for the super amoled screen and blazing cpu. Plus the physical keyboard option is nice and the phones is still relatively light and thin. Evo has a huge screen though not as nice looking color and contrast wise. Can't go wrong with either.

PS: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the frick'n flipside! ZOMG... finally a frick'n legit slider smartphone on AT&T! To bad the screen is only 3.1 inches since that track pad takes up so much room and it's at the last gen screen resolution. :(

what the fuck is that stupid square phone

Its two squares that slide/rotate to make a larger phone. Much like the slider above it. Its a smaller size, and it has the "cool" factor of the rotating slide, so I can see it being popular.

The Flipout is already out in Canada on Rogers I believe. It's the one phone with a release date of Oct 17th cause it's already out.

I actually kind of like the flipside, but why the fuck does it have to have a touchpad which means the screen gets cut off early? That plus the lower res makes me think AT&T wants gimped android phones to not mess with the iphone market.

I just want a legit keyboard slider phone on at&t dang it!!

hmm..

Every Samsung phone I've played with always feel like they have response problems. My friend had the Moment and whenever I sued it the screen didnt feel like it always responded. My wife has the Intercept and sometimes I feel the same about it.

How would you say the screen feels in terms of response? Is the Evo screen a lot bigger than the Epic?

Evo is a 4.3 inch screen. It along with the Droid X are the biggest phones on the market (not counting pseudo tablet stuff like the streak) and trust me it shows. The epic is 4 inches will is still descently big, but IMO it shows when someone has an Evo or an X in their hands.

Hey everyone!

I'm 95% sure I'm signing a new contract with Verizon soon. With my employee discount, I'll pay ~$55 for unlimited data, 300 minutes, and no text (using Google Voice).

The question is... what phone?

I think I'm going to buy through Amazon as they have the best prices as far as I can tell. My choices now are...

Amazon price/Engadget score
Incredible $50/8
Droid 2 $40/6
Droid X $150/7

I really wanted the Droid X, but I don't know if it's worth the extra money over the other two. I think I would actually prefer no keyboard, but I wouldn't die with one. I'll probably go to the Verizon store after work just to play around with these. Engadet's problems with the Droid 2 don't sound gamebreaking (Connection issues -> Is this really an issue or early adopter problem?... Low quality cameras -> Don't really care, have a real camera... Dislike Moto skin -> You can root and get stock 2.2, right?).

Should I go with one of those, or is there possibly something new coming in the next few months I should wait on? Anything 2011 and beyond... that's too far away.

Knowing the way these carriers are moving, something significant will be released next month. I'd wait just a little longer, honestly

Only thing is I guess, if I do wait, I will probably have to pay full price for something that's the latest and greatest. I'll probably just get one of these three.

So I am on a Verizon family plan with my wife. She hates her Eris and wants an upgrade and that $50 Incredible looks good on Amazon.

Problem is, my phone is the mainline on the account and is the only one that has an upgrade w/ extension available. If I get the phone on Amazon as an upgrade for my Motorola Droid, can I call Verizon when the Incredible arrives and have them switch numbers or whatever so that I keep my Droid and she gets the Incredible? I know on their website I can transfer the upgrade, but not sure how that works if I buy the phone through Amazon.

Since there is a big price difference I'd get either the Droid 2 or Incredible. Basically ask youself if you want a hardware keyboard or not. Then buy one. :D

Is the Droid Pro the first blackberry form factor style Android device?

First that I can think of. Engadget just updated saying it's running 2.2 with a 1ghz proc and a 3.1 inch display.

Well I'm in a bit of a pickle here.

My contract with ATT (im in US) is up Nov 8th. I will be going to Verizon, but I'm not sure of the phones. On the one hand I really, want an HTC device, and the incredible seems to be the only choice, unless they release the evo type device soon. As it looks like in the above post, the droid pro will be a different form factor, I need to get my wife something with QWERTY, and we were hoping to pick up the possible droid 2 world
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...rty-device-destined-for-verizon-breaks-cover/

Any idea if there will be any phones within next month aside from the announcement of the driod pro?

I'd wait a bit for the HTC Lexicon/Merge to get announced which should be sometime soon. Why does it have to be Verizon? You can hit T-Mobile for the G2 as soon as it ends.

I've tried every almost other carrier besides Verizon, and the coverage has been pretty bad. I was considering sprint for the evo and epic but I've heard the coverage is not the best even though they fall back on verizon for roaming, and the customer service is terrible.
I suppose I'd rather pay a bit more just so I know i'll get good coverage and decent customer service if need be.

Absolutely they do,

I had to leave them though, as I really had little to no coverage once I moved. I'm in a pretty rural area now.

Hopefully HTC will announce a few phones soon for Verizon. Something to replace the incredible, and the ADR6325 for the slide out keyboard.

They have Bing instead of Google natively though.

Decisions decisions. I am liking the Pro, and think I am going to pick that one up.

this is the phone blackberry fans have been asking for. too bad RIM would rather slap a new coat of paint on their existing phones from 2008 rather than create something new and exciting like this droid pro.

Is there a reason Droid 2 is $9.99 on Wirefly? I know there are better phones out now, but that still seems like a steal. Should I snatch it up?

Those Motorola phones look like just barely upgraded versions of the Backflip.

When will HTC and Motorola make a Captivate-level Android phone for AT&T? Due for an upgrade in December, and would hate to get a Captivate then only to see HTC or Motorola (or even Samsung) come out with something much more powerful shortly after.

I like it, but the screen resolution is shit, 320 x 480. Will have to check it out in person before I decide what I want to do.

If cuts have been made to extend battery life -- I'm open to that.

Mark Zuckerberg had the toughest time when he moved from a Blackberry to an iPhone. Battery life! I think he's switched back to a BB.

-Moto tablet "early 2011" not necessarily Q1

-Moto Tegra powered Droid may come before Christmas but most likely 2011, is real

Sauce

I'm happy with this news. My Droid's still kicking and if Moto and Verizon released a 3.0 Tegra rocking super beast I'd have to buy it. I am in no rush. Take your time.

Eh they look the same cause of the UI. That being said I'd hardly call it a small upgrade since the hardware is a shit ton better even if it's not top of the line and android 2.1 craps all over 1.5 or whatever the backflip is stuck on. :lol

The key for those one though is the fact that they ARE entry level smart phones on an AT&T market that didn't really have many decent options other than the Aria unless you wanted a last gen iphone at 99 bucks.

so tell me about gingerbread? is it going to be more GPU reliant the way iOS and windows phone 7 are? froyo looks rather dull in comparison.

True, but AT&T has no other phone to match the Captivate besides the iPhone 4 (and yeah, that's part of the problem, of course) and maybe Blackberry Torch.

I just wish AT&T would realize that people enjoy choices, and something like the Droid lines or Evo 4G would go a long way towards helping that choice.

To quote Liu Kang, "How would anyone know?"

Looking it over further, the droid incredible at $49.99 might be a bit more appealing. I can't decide though.

I know you guys are more interested in talking about new and upcoming stuff, but I have almost zero experience with smartphones and am looking for a deal on a solid phone with some nice features. Anyone with experience with either of these two phones have any advice?

I don't disagree on this what so ever. I just think people need to separate that issue from these phones. They needed more entry level phones as well, and they need another big android phone that's not named the captivate. Guess that's why they are so into pushing Win 7 Phones.

I see your point. Windows Phone 7 does nothing for me though. :(

What other carriers phone can I use on AT&T if I buy it on eBay or what not?

Hey, since Google has released their new Android phone page, I'm thinking for the next thread I'll just point to that. It's nearly impossible to keep up with the phone announcements now, and while it was terrific fun and pretty neat to see them all listed together, I think my time would be better spent making a more newb-friendly OP (newb meaning hardware newb.) The next thread will make a point to discuss the different specs and what they mean.

I might keep a "Current Lineup" section for each of the four major US carriers, with their latest phone releases so someone can just jump in and compare, but the days of going in-depth for every carrier worldwide are gone.
