Nope they plan on releasing phones that will support it by the end of the year.

That's pretty lame, it's not even 4G... Why bother with "+" when 4G (LTE/WiMax) is around the corner?

Edit- Ah this article clears up some confusion.

Nice article? Rant? LOL. I know T-mobile is not marketing their newer faster network as 4G even though on paper it will be as fast or faster than Sprint's 4G? Not sure about the speeds, but that's what I've read.

Back to the International Telecommunication Union, they’ve said that they’re not going to name which technologies are going to get the prestigious “4G” moniker until October 2010, so from a semantics point of view, any operator saying that they’re building a 4G network is being deceitful and are driven by a bunch of asshole marketers.

Someone should make that illegal.

Edit: This

Anway, T-Mobile (NYSE: DT), who was late to the 3G game, and has a limited amount of 3G handsets since they’re using an even weirder chunk of spectrum, the 1700 MHz band, is ironically in the best position right now. They’ve committed to HSPA+ and are going to be able to cover 185 million people in 100 markets by the end of this year. Their technology is supposed to reach theoretical speeds of 21 Mbps, which in reality will prove to be half that, but that’s still 10 megabits. Handset makers are also going to find it much easier to make HSPA+ products than LTE devices. Best thing about HSPA+ is that it supports the voice infrastructure that’s already in place. LTE, which was a data only network technology until about a month ago, needs new infrastructure equipment to support voice!

article seems a bit biased, I think. "Fuck AT&T?" really? :lol

My only issue here is (and admittedly, I love sprint and am not impartial) there is NO WAY 4g is going to cover a majority of the country anytime soon. Wi max, LTE, or otherwise. So the need for "hybrid" devices that still handle data over 3g (for non 4g coverage zones and wimax voice) should be obvious.

even a device that ONLY did 3g in the states would be pretty worthless- the coverage for a good chunk of the country can be pretty spotty outside of the major metro areas. Sprint and Verizon have the greatest amount of coverage by far, and I can't tell you how often i end up dropping into 1x zones when I take a roadtrip.

point being- expect to see devices on sprint and verizon that continue to use CDMA and 4g concurrrently for a good long while. as for speed, covering an area the size of sweden in 24Mbps internet is one thing, attempting to do it over the entire US is another thing entirely. Megacenters like LA or NY would likely get too overloaded too quickly (see: AT&T's 3g problems there) and smaller markets in flyover country. would never generate enough revenue to justify the cost. Hell, there are still areas of the country restricted to dialup for this reason alone.

Tmobile as I understand is big in europe, but distant 4th place here. their 3g implementation made even AT&T's maps look good. I don't hold out great hopes of an expansive rollout on their part. Note that Sprint AND verizon have committed to covering about a third of the country (about 150 million to 200 million, depending on which press releases you read) by the end of this year. sprint is actually well underway on their rollout, and Verizon has a lot more money and marketing muscle to pull it off. Personally, I'd bank on one of those two having an expansive 4g network before Tmobile does.

There's always the N1, if you're on Sprint. I don't think you can go wrong with anything snapdragon+2.1. The 2.1 ROM from Damagecontrol is insanely fast on my Hero. On Snapdragon, it must scream. So I think packaging is a big factor going forward. For me, I want Sense, 8MP, Snapdragon and AMOLED. 3 out of 4 ain't so bad.

Compared to a iPhone, Hero or myTouch, how bright is the screen on the HD2? If it can match the Hero's torch mode, then I'm fine with it. I never use that, and haven't had any real issues with visibility. My 3G iPhone had some issues since it didn't adjust brightness dynamically. But Android seems pretty smart about it. AMOLEDs must be amazing in comparison. PEACE.
I don't know how bright the Hero is but the HD screen's as bright or brighter as an iPhone

Cross-posting in all my threads. My Photobucket has run out of bandwidth for the month so the pics in the OP have been replaced with placeholders. Bandwidth count is reset on the 1st of every month so I hope you'll all be patient until then. Sorry again, and thanks.

Just got confirmation of my HTC desire being shipped by T-Mobile! How I long to rub its sexiness with my fingers ohhhhhhhhhhh mmmmmmmmm *droooooooooooooooooool*.......

Dudes, check this out, I just discovered this:

Before:
prop_mod_before.png

After:
prop_mod_after.png

This works for G1 and Magic US, Euro, possible other phones and countries. The OP says it works for Cyanogen (I think Cyanogen included these settings in his newest rom), I can confirm it also works for Enomther's roms, most likely others. There some variance depending on your location and phone, I suggest reading through the thread, specifically the info Amon_Ra posted.

This might seem out of place, but has there been effort made into porting Android onto the HD2? I just came back from a Tmobile store *in the US*, and thought that phone is amazing, besides the Windows 6.5 part :/

I'd appreciate it if those that receive the HTC Desire post back here with some impressions, based on reviews it will be my next handset however I like to hear personal thoughts.

So HTC has all the love in these thread, but what if the processor in Samsung Galaxy S has three times the polygonal power of a Snapdragon phone?

Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:
Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7 million(?) triangles/sec
Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8×50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 million triangles/sec
Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec

http://androidandme.com/2010/03/new...bird-chip-to-have-3x-gpu-power-of-snapdragon/

Not the best in everything anymore huh HTC EVO? ;p

Snapdragon is a SoC which is designed for power efficiency. I have a feeling that GPU is gonna suck up a ton of power.

Also, TouchWiz is still lame and no amount of horsepower can change that. If you're gonna brag about the Galaxy S, at least brag about something that's worth it: the Super AMOLED screen. ;P

For me, the biggest thing is that XDA-devs only support phones built by HTC. Pretty much every HTC phone gets a good amount of post-release development support. It's true that large development communities have arisen around other popular phones like the Droid, but there is no guarantee that the Galaxy S will get a similar response.

The Hero is the only Sprint phone with Android, correct? I'm thinking of trying to get my Blackberry Pearl replaced later today, and if the cost isn't too prohibitive I'm considering switching to a different phone. I don't want to extend my contract yet (currently set to end in September), I'm just going to try to use the free replacement I get for my Pearl to my advantage.

I know the new one comes out in just a few months, but if I CAN get a good deal on the current one I'm thinking that will be a good way to test out the "no physical keyboard" deal before I drop real money on the better version. Then when September rolls around and I'm a free agent again I'll put the knowledge gained to good use. My Pearl has been really glitchy lately and it would be really annoying to wait until the new Hero comes out.

Hero is fantastic, Best Android phone of last year tbh. and its getting 2.1 soon!

Is the Backflip the only Android phone US AT&T subscribers will get this year? I've got an upgrade coming up (May/June/July) but I haven't seen any news on anything being released.

On Sprint, too.

HTC Desire is coming soon, and the Nexus One has a version that's AT&T compatible.

So it does; it wasn't shown with the Android graphic on the phone list page, but when you click into the detail it does show up.

If I can work it out I think I'll still try for a Hero, since as I mentioned I want to at least try out the non-physical keyboard type phone, but it's good to know there's at least an option available for a hard keyboard.

Could the OP re-up the images with a better host?

Hey! I love PB. :P

They'll be back up on the 1st, don't worry. Maybe before then if I take El Papa's suggestion.

Don't AMOLED displays have drawbacks of their own? Is it really that cut and dried? Or, is "Super" AMOLED another animal entirely? I can't keep track of all these new display types...

Great phone.......LOL!
no seriously, it's an awesome awesome phone. So snappy and responsive.

Video playback is jaw dropping, most flash games i've tried on facebook(lol) seem to work (Some better than others).

Sense UI is cool i love the text message, friend stream, exchange activesync

the optical sensor works well. but to be honest i forget it's there.

pics. i have taken some on my iPhone of the phone, but they are crappy. and i know the 3GS is only 3.2MP but the camera on this phone is >>>>>>>>>>>>much better than the one and the iPhone.

Anyone know a way to get pics off the iphone and uploaded without connecting to my mac?

neogaf webapp needs a new icon! and the instant install and removal e.t.c. of apps is fabulous.

Syncing is a bitch i can sync anything with double twist and activesync exchange but not my contacts. it's my first android phone...anyone know a way to get my iphone contacts over, other than redoing the lot?

anyhow. words do fail to describe the speed of this thing and the screen itself colourwise and lighting and the contrast e.t.c. compared to the iphone are just leagues ahead.

so far so good

Super AMOLED is supposed to have better colours than AMOLED. Basically, you can enjoy the beauty of AMOLED displays indoors, in addition to sunlight legibility as good as TFT displays. As far as I remember, Samsung claims that Super AMOLED displays are 30% better than the current AMOLED displays when it comes to colours and sunlight legibility.

I was impressed by the current AMOLED displays of Samsung phones such as Jet. They are significantly better than Nokia and HTC displays which aren't even significantly better than TFTs. Super AMOLED displays look great even in videos. Samsung Beam is probably going to be my next phone and I am excited. I am still waiting for it.

Edit: Michael Oryl from MobileBurn uploaded some YouTube videos of the Galaxy S at CITA 2010. The phone looks great. The Super AMOLED display looks delicious even in photos and videos.

1.iSyncr (Mac, PC) is the best way to get music from iTunes on an Android phone if you don't mind throwing out the couple bucks for it. It syncs much faster than double twist, it doesn't require any setup, it doesn't require DoubleTwist's annoying method of scanning your libary for changes, you simply plug in your phone, check the playlists and music you want and let it sync. It also avoids issues like syncing songs over multiple times just because they appear in multiple areas (such as two different playlists). It's basically effing awesome.

2. You can get your iPhone contacts onto it by syncing through Gmail, which can be done a million ways. I'm pretty sure you can use wifi to sync your iPhone contacts to Gmail (via google sync), and then from there sync your gmail contacts with your Desire. I think HTC bundles software (HTC Sync?) which would allow outlook sync, if you want to go that way.

Either way, welcome to Android. There are tons of cool things you can do with this OS and these devices, so go crazy.

Sharp IS01 Android MID for KDDI

sharp-kddi-is01-1-540x312.jpg

Not the hottest piece of Japanese hardware, not even close. But it is the first Sharp mobile device with Android. And the best Android MID is terms of hardware.

I hope this thing isn't their supposed smartphone for Europe/global market. I really hope it is not their supposed phone. Being a MID and all I don't expect it to be released outside Japan. There are many reasons based on some previous observations since I already know how the guys at Mobile division of Sharp think.

Yeah iSyncr doesn't show up in the marketplace for Desire..... :(

I worked out with the contacts to sync my iPhone with my Work Exchange server then sync my contacts on y Desire with exchange and it all worked flawlessly

Am I insane to be considering a switch from Verizon to ATT just to have a NexusOne???!!!

(Bearing in mind a 22% sevice discount through work)

If the rates are cheaper and you'll stay with AT&T long, then go for it. If not, then stick with Verizon. They'll be getting the N1 very soon. PEACE.

Check Verizon's website to see if you get a discount there too. I do and I was never even told about it by my employer. They offer discounts to TONS of companies. From what I understand, some employers don't even know their employees get discounts. They're just given out to any company that has a business contract with Verizon.
