oh snap. less phone minutes, I presume? or no texting included?

no, featurewise it's identical to the 69.99 plan, but has about 50 more anytime minutes.
it's technically an employee referral plan, but sprint has made a particular employee referral code publically available if you bother to search for it.

the only drawbacks are that it's

1.) for new customers only and

2.) corporate discounts don't apply on top of this plan. They do for the 69.99 and above plans (though NOT for the 99.99, for some bizarre reason.) if you have a corporate discount of 20% or higher (I do) it may be cheaper to actually use the 69.99 plan, rather than the 59.99.

I went into pretty extensive detail on the sprint plans in the evo thread if you're interested.

I don't know if I knew and didn't care since it's Samsung, but I watched a video today...the Galaxy S has a front camera ::shocked::

There's also the ability to make the iPhone app grid clone into a list, so you don't have to be disgusted with your phone every time you go to launch an app or be embarrassed when people see your phone thinking its some cheap imitation,.

I want to say its cool. I want to say I can recommend getting or that I would get it...but...Samsung...

I've had the chance to play with the Galaxy S and I love it.

You have to see the screen in itself. Kills every screen on a phone that I've ever seen. It even plays DivX and HD .mkv files. The phone runs buttery smooth. I read a rumour that it uses the same processor that the new iPhone and iPad uses, because Samsung made the chips..

I am taking my POS Cliq XT back tomorrow but after stopping in the Tmobile store today I was told that the new Mytouch is a better for than the Nexus (which I was waiting for). So should I still hold out for the Nexus or go with the new Mytouch slide?

MyTouch Slide is pretty good, but it's not Google's baby nor is it a superphone. If you don't need high end specs, prefer a keyboard, and don't mind waiting a bit for updates, the Slide is for you. Otherwise, hop on the Nexus One bandwagon.

Fuuuuuk damn uninformed store clerks!

Told you to stay away from that garbage Cliq.

Hello. US Cellular is getting Android phones in July. I understand that they are getting 3 phones and I was wondering what your guys opinions on them are:

The HTC Desire: I can find lots of info of this online. I guess it is a slightly revamped Nexus One. I guess it is supposed to be a high end option.

The Samsung Acclaim: About all I can find is a screenshot which shows that it has a sliding keyboard. Apparently it is supposed to be like the Galaxy S and is a budget option.

The third I haven't heard anything about. I just remember reading a rumor of a third phone when I was looking into this a while ago and now articles are dominated by the other two.

So this looks to be my first smartphone and I'm pumped. I understand that I have to get a data plan but it looks like the only option is just a $25 fee. Is there any discount for getting two data plans or anything like that?

Do you guys have any more info on this or any recomendations for me?

Thanks!

They're getting the Desire? If so get that, hands down. That's a pretty sweet phone for them to pull.

TmoNews has obtained what looks to be shot-by-shot descriptions of two upcoming commercials for the carrier which shows all phones free for one day only. That means the Garminfone, myTouch 3G Slide, and all other Android phones will be free on that day. It's not known if it pertains to certain rate plans, add-on, upgrades, etc. We'll, hopefully, find out before the 19th!

No Nexus One or Galaxy S, though. :(

So simply put, just hold on! We are on track.

We have done some good work to get the devices out at yet more aggressive price which we were aiming for. There is a final word on 2 variants of the device, one cheaper normal LCD version and other with dual display PQ version. Another update is that we have evaluated another platform, which is proving to be extremely efficient on battery and much cheaper as well. So now you might be able to choose among the HW platforms as well (but here is a might in this line).

The UI team has dome some extremely beautiful job and we were waiting for them to finish up so SDK can be released. So, developers gear up!

We have also done wonderful innovations on e-mail front. Something which might become the biggest differentiation for Adam.

Suddenly (and expectedly) everyone is on to tablet space now(Computex), even Blackberry is there (I heard so). But what remains to be seen is the content and developer community which comes with them and the differentiation!

And the good news finally!

We have closed the final round of funding and are now in perfect sync with our investors. This is extremely good news for everyone. I say that, because if we have Global ambitions, there must be someone who can help us achieve that. And now we have got the muscle power.

Looks like things are going well. Unfortunately, nothing concrete except a re-affirmation of the split models (LCD vs PixelQi), and possibly two different processors (probably Tegra 2 and Atom.)

Samsung is the one who made the screen for the new iphone? same screen in the galaxy s?

:lol No way! iPhone 4 is just a suped up LCD. Galaxy S is Super-AMOLED.

equap said:
ok. i want to see them side by side.

We got the dummy of the Galaxy S in today (a dummy is an exact replica of the materials of the external handset casing and dimensions, minus the super amoled screen) It's a really nice looking handset, definitely gives off an iPhone vibe. Very very slim with a small lip at the back of the handset. Nice size too, I reckon 4" screen is about perfect for a phone. I'll report back once I've seen a working model (expecting it within the week) but i've seen the super Amoled screen on the Wave and it's absolutely beautiful. I'll be surprised if the retina display on the new iPhone is as good, because it is truly amazing.

Huh. Is AMOLED 24bit (16.7M colors)? Also, they don't make LED displays at that pixel density? PEACE.

There's a huge contrast ratio difference too:

iPhone 4: 800:1
Galaxy S: 10,000:1

Plus the Galaxy S is 4", the iPhone 4 is 3.5".

Bear in mind that contrast ratios are mud. See any LCD TV ever. The proof is in the seeing, but I just can't see the retina display outshining super amoled.

Hmm...now I'm getting some of the buzz about the Galaxy. I mean, it looks pretty cheap in the pics I've seen. I guess I'll have to drop by a Tmobile when it comes out. I haven't seen an AMOLED screen yet, but at this point, contrast ratio is gonna be way more noticeable than pixel density. I'd like to see how 4" is against my Evo too. The size of this screen is amazing. My thumbs are loving the touch keyboard at this size. PEACE.

Actually it doesn't look or fell cheap in the flesh. The opposite in fact, Build quality feels really nice, solid without being heavy. The materials may be plastic, but it's not cheap plastic. Super Amoled is amazing, especially when compared to traditional LCD. No light leaking, no washed out blacks and amazingly vivid colours. Super Amoled > Amoled > LCD

I believe its 100,000:1.

Unless the Super AMOLED has less contrast ratio than the AMOLED's they are currently shipping in the Nexus One and Incredible.

The Galaxy definitely has the best screen available.

I'd forgotten that it comes with a Samsung remote app in built too, useful if you've got a wifi enabled Samsung TV. Which I do, but I'd have to buy the dongle.

Do we think Samsung will update the Galaxy S to gingerbread?

On one hand, it's probably the new king of all phones...but only spec-wise. I don't know if I can trust Samsung. What does everyone else think? If the rumor of them getting it onto every carrier is true, it's going to be a difficult phone to ignore.

Forgive me if this has been asked a ton of times already, but can I get any recommendations for an Android iPhone replacement? I'm not so up on the latest and greatest smartphone tech.

I've got a standard 3G and there is no way in hell I'm renewing my contract with AT&T. So I'm looking to switch to a different device entirely sometime in September. Any ideas what would make a great replacement around then? Or links to help me shed my phone-noobness?

If my location matters at all I'm in San Francisco. Can't even get an AT&T signal in the middle of Haight Ashbury for fuck's sake.

As it stands at the moment, I'd probably still go for the Nexus One, it's going to get software updates faster than anything else which is pretty big selling point when you consider the pace at which Android is being developed. September is a long time off though.

The only Samsung Android phone updated was the Moment, so they do have a spotty track record. The Moment was also stock Android, their TouchWiz on the Galaxy S could delay updates even if they're committed to doing them.

Their track record isn't stellar. There have been updates to the Galaxy Portal to Android 2.1 on the 3 network (and that's running stock Android 1.6!!), yet not on T-Mobile yet. What Andrex said. Bound to be a new Motorola vanilla Android handset on it's way I'd expect.

You guys remember this joke, right?

Well look what motorola printed in some papers today :lol :lol

Anyone have a good link comparing the verizon android phones? I am thinking of jumping in soon, but want comparisons. Just FYI, battery is probably the #1 priority for me. Specs and features are nice and all, but mean nohing if I am worried about it losing juice all the time.

What's the best free way to tether my htc hero (sprint) to my laptop? I found pdanet but havent heard if the free version is good enough.

Root it and install Android-wifi-tether. You can try Barnacle from the market (don't think it requires root) but I think I couldn't get it to work when I had my Hero.

Thanks "Bo", I'll check that out :)

So I was at the mall today and I decided to try out the Droid Incredible, and man it was great. It was so smooth and intuitive. It's really shocking to see how much Google is improving with these things.

Android tablet can't come soon enough.

:D

Depending on if you flashed the latest update from Sprint (a few days ago, the initial 2.1 update is fine) you can go to http://unrevoked.com/ on your phone, download then run the apk, that should give you root access (though not recovery if you want custom ROMs, those require more steps).

If you just want wifi tether then you can install that from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and you should be good to go!

Why are people so hyped for the Galaxy S? Is it just the screen? Did I miss something?

Straight up high-specced muscle phone

Oh, and I also believe it's being launched on every single major carrier in the US. Samsung is making little effort to hide the fact that this now considered their defacto flagship phone.

He also announced that Motorola would have 2-4 new devices this year which would have front facing cameras like we’ve now seen on the EVO 4G and the new iPhone. Unless the Xtreme and Droid 2 undergo last minute face lifts which will include these cameras, it sounds like there might be 2 additional devices to watch out for come the holiday season. Very exciting.
Oh and this quote from Jha fit nicely into the rumors we’ve been all over…

“(Droid) sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I’d sell more,” Jha said without discussing which components were in short supply.

This news makes me smile.
