I am wondering what new super android phones T-Mobile has coming down the pipeline. I know there is a rumor that the Galaxy S is coming but what else. I am using the Incredible and love it but Verizon blows balls were I live and they have horrendous customer sevice. Once the contract is up in November I most likely be on T-Mobile.

Oh, and I also believe it's being launched on every single major carrier in the US. Samsung is making little effort to hide the fact that this now considered their defacto flagship phone.

MMMM. Word on what kinda battery life to expect from that phone? Of course, it will be hard to tell until they are out in the wild.

true but i think the 1500 mAh in the Galaxy is the biggest stock battery yet, i think i've only seen 1400 mAh batts. of course, i'm not talking about any bulky after market batts.

Does anybody know when this phone is actually coming out?

I've read it's coming to T-Mobile at the end of July. No idea about other carriers. Rumor is it will hit every carrier, but the only specific date being said is T-Mobile on July 21st.

I'm hoping it comes to Sprint. It's either that or the Evo for me, I think.

I am not eligible for an upgrade on Verizon for a while (several months at least), so it can take its time getting to there.

if it does hit all carriers that can only mean more galaxy exclusive games for that monster gpu in there.

it will fragment the android market some but fak it.

Cool. My wife will be buying my an EVO next month under the condition that I make sure she can get a new phone too. Right now she has the Samsung Instinct and it's giving her too many problems.

I think I'm going to just tell her to get the HTC Hero for $80 and call it a day. Not going to wait on the Galaxy S.

i really need someone to do a galaxy s and iphone 4 screen comparison. interested to see how the blacks are from the iphone 4

Is the Galaxy S really that great? Idk, everytime I look at it, I feel kind of underwhelmed. But then again, I'm on Tmo and I can't get a Nexus One (on family plan), so I better start liking it I guess.

If you missed it, Engadget wrote an article comparing the Evo and iPhone 4. A lot of good was said about the Evo, but the iPhone won a lot based on 10 minutes hands on and Steve Job's promises.

There was also a poll. The Evo was winning. Engadget pulled the article.

Today they explained it was because the iPhone isn't out yet, which makes sense. Poll is back up. Cast a vote if you'd like.

I dunno, the hero is getting a bit long in the tooth. I have one and like it, but its definitely not as speedy as some of the newer android phones.

Uh, according to GSM Arena, the Galaxy S survived 7:25 hours of video playback: http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-i9...ours-of-video-playback-puts-critics-to-shame/

Whether you like it or not, you can't really deny the fact that phone has tons of positive buzz. It's fast as hell, has a lovely screen, and a strong battery

But, it is Samsung

Does the Galaxy S not have a LED flash? Just watched the video on Samsung's site and didn't see one.

And no search button? Long press for voice search/commands is invaluable on a stock Android phone.

Little disconcerting seeing the "retro" iphone 2g styling. Some of the value-add apps seem pretty cool, though I wish they and other OEMs like HTC would just sell those kind of apps on Marketplace.

Two steps forward, two steps back. No search button is insta-fail. Voice search > *. No question, no contest. I abuse the hell out of that feature. Menu is also an important button. I hope they've put those buttons on the sides. PEACE.

I think you can long press one of the buttons to search. No flash is bizarre. Can't understand what Samsung were thinking. Flagship phone in 2010 that can't take pictures without good lighting? Crazy.

So, I have a Desire, and my friend is interested in getting a Android phone but doesn't think he can afford a Desire. Only other note is this is UK. Suggestions?

Afford it as in buying it outright, or because the monthly contract payments would be too expensive? Cos there's some decent Desire deals around if you are prepared to sniff around.

EDIT: Dunno if it's Phandroid scrambling around for hits but they are reporting a 2ghz phone from Motorola before the year end..

FUCK!, at this pace the iPhone 4 will be obsoleted in a few months. I guess the Desire, Nexus One, and Incredible will start becoming the "affordable" phones soon. :lol

HD video recording, playback via HDMI, an HD resolution screen, a gyroscope accelerometer that Apple’s now made so popular, a still camera capable of taking photos more than 5-megapixels, and more would make up the device. Coupled with the aforementioned processing power, I’d be convinced that Motorola’s building a device worthy of sending man to another galaxy (no disrespect intended).

I'm not sure how that's going to happen, since they are closing down their online phone store. I hope Google keeps releasing Nexus phones in the future (as their developer's phone). Let's hope if they continue that they will sell them to the public at their Google Store.

Yeah the smartphone space is incredible right now. It's almost blink and you'll miss the next handset. It's going to get insanely crowded when Windows Phone 7 drops.

It doesn't have to be the Nexus Two but whatever phone Google adopts as the next developer phone.

Make him save for a Desire or Nexus One. It's worth it. You can also try to get a Milestone, it should be cheaper than a Desire.

As long as I can still buy it sim free. My network doesn't stock the Nexus One, but I was happy to import from America and use it with my sim. I don't want to have to sign a 2 year contract with another network to get the Nexus Two, I'm no fan of contracts longer than 12 months and with 24 months being the norm it leaves me in a bit of a crap situation.

I just got a Desire from Dial A Phone for £25/month, 300mins, unlimited texts, 500mb and £45 cashback (Quidco) bringing it down to £22.50/month over 18 months.

I have a Droid right now and I will most likely be getting whatever heir to the Nexus One is available when my contract is up. It's annoying long it takes for updates to get approved. Considering how horribly the 2.1 release was handled, I don't expect to see an official 2.2 for the Droid until probably the end of the year.

I'm probably just going to root my phone soon and install an overclocked kernel and the current Droid 2.2 ROM that is floating around. I am just worried about bricking my phone, but I might spend a few hours on Saturday researching the process.

Nice, although ever so slightly underwhelming with the Evo 4g and Incredible out. I wonder how that good that processor is. Wasn't the Droid 550 Mhz, but actually translated as being a heck of a lot more powerful than that number suggested (especially in comparison to the 1ghz snapdragon in the Nexus)?
True but then again that's what the Droid X/Extreme/Shadow is for, and I believe the Droid 2 and X will both be using the OMAP 3630 which is faster than the 3430 and is a 45nm vs 65nm so better battery life.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the Shadow. Should be hot.

As enthusiasts of the N900, Palm Pre, and Motorola Droid alike know, the 600 MHz clock is somewhat conservative, as many have been able to get up to 1 GHz relatively easily with custom ROMs and other kernel patches. In fact, the OMAP 3440 has a recommended clock target of 800 MHz, some 200 MHz higher than the recommended 600 MHz target for the OMAP 3430. Notably, the OMAP36x series running at 45-nm has recommended clocks of 720 MHz for all but the highest end OMAP 3640, which is 1 GHz. It's entirely likely that the difference between the OMAPxx40 and the lower clocked OMAPxx30 for each process target is binning, possibly explaining why some are able to get devices running at even over 1 GHz.

Of course, the primary comparison for this generation is arguably Qualcomm's popular Snapdragon SoC. The primary differences between these two popular SoCs are two things: the Qualcomm SoC includes celluar modems, but more notable is the difference in GPU. We've talked briefly before about how the QSD8250/QSD8650 both include Qualcomm Adreno 200 GPUs which are actually re-branded AMD z340 GPUs brought over with the IP Qualcomm bought when it acquired AMD's handheld graphics and multimedia assets division. Interestingly enough, the AMD z340 is related to the Xenos GPU in the Xbox 360. Standards support wise, however, the Adreno 200 and PowerVR SGX 530 both target OpenGL 2.0 ES, but performance wise we now know the PowerVR SGX 530 is superior performance wise over the z340. Keep in mind the iPhone 3GS has a slightly higher spec'ed version of PowerVR SGX GPU, an SGX 535.

It's difficult to be absolute about how much the performance delta between the Adreno 200/AMD z340 and the PowerVR SGX530 really is, as so much of the difference is the result of driver differences. Add in further complexities surrounding how well implemented features are on different smartphone OSes, and it becomes even more challenging to give you a real objective answer. Point is, without a common software stack, it's difficult to give a solid benchmark. That said, it's hard to argue that Imagination's PowerVR SGX series isn't faster in practice across the board.

23292.png

We can see that the OMAP 3430 holds its own, but still just isn't as fast as the 1 GHz Snapdragon SoC. What's interesting here is that the Motorola Droid's Cortex A8 is running at 550 MHz, some 81% slower than the 1 GHz Snapdragon. However, the performance difference between the two is only 44% for Linpack. Benchmark Pi numbers are closer to the kind of scaling I'd expect, as the 81% increase in clock speed results in a 73% faster compute time.

That Droid "2" is so disappointing. Wasn't expecting much, but even the look...I hate what they did to the chin/shorter top layer, it looks weird.

Anyway, it's clearly Droid 1.5. I see it like a refresh, and I'm not jealous.

Android Phones Selling Faster Than They Can Be Built

android-productivity-apps.jpg

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha revealed to Reuters today that the company’s Android-powered mobile devices are selling faster than they can be manufactured. Verizon has had similar experiences with the Droid Incredible from HTC, an Android phone whose biggest problem has been that demand outstrips current supply.

More Motorola devices, including several with front-facing cameras for video conferencing, are slated for release later this year. Sprint’s EVO, another video conferencing-capable Android (Android) handset, has been on sale for just a few days and is already sold out and breaking Sprint sales records, too.

Additionally LG, a company that had previously committed to releasing Windows Mobile handsets, has stated it will release 20 Android handsets this year alone.

Ever since the Droid’s launch last November, its sales figures have rocked the mobile industry. Manufacturers and carriers might well see this hot, new breed of Android smartphones as a fiscal shot in the arm; with the notable exception of the Nexus One, we’ve seen quite a few dazzling successes in this market.

It’ll be interesting to compare sales between some of these Android devices and the upcoming iPhone 4. We reported last month — before the iPhone 4 or EVO releases — that Androids as a whole were outselling iPhones. Do you think the greater range of choice between carriers and handsets will give Android manufacturers the ultimate advantage in the smartphone wars?

Poor Nexus One...people don't want to pay full price for handsets. :lol

It looks normal, but the cpu processor speed is insane, been using this for about a week. Battery life is decent about 1-2 days worth if you go slow on mobile data, you can watch all types of media even mkv, just drag and drop into a folder and volia no more shitty itunes syncing.

There's a new firmware update (no not froyo), overall signal strength has improved and phone is much more responsive with heavy background usage.

And the screen, you have to see it to believe it again I state I can read in direct tropical bright sunlight. It's the colours are deeper and richer than any other phone out there.
