Samsung Tab will bomb... almost 1000€ :lol

yeah but it will be sold at 199 to 299 with a contract and maybe even less. I mean the desire costs almost 500€ and you get it for 1€ with a contract.

I'm somehow oddly impressed by the Tab judging by Samsung's conference, funny commercial and Engadget's hands on. It's not really screaming iPhone as much as I thought it did and it seems to be very thought out and interesting. The screen size means regular keyboard two thumbing looks comfortable vs the awkwardness on an iPad which is a plus and Samsung's apps and built in things like the magazine and news reader looked awesome (but fuck Kobo, Kindle ftw).

Screen size might be too small to justify for me personally but that's opinion. Should have been an amoled screen though!

edit: This is nice.

What was interesting was what happened when future plans popped up. Samsung Mobile's President, JK Shin, got a little feisty and let drop that the Galaxy Tab would definitely be getting the Android 3.0 Gingerbread update. He also went further and said that Samsung would be releasing devices based on the Tablet-friendly "Honeycomb" version of Android next year and that Samsung would have a "full tablet portfolio" in 2011.

http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-tablets-gingerbread-honeycomb-full-portfolio-2011

I would definitely get a 10 or so inch tablet for the living room to replace my aging laptop. If it does wifi, basic web, has a webcam and I can use it as a digital photo frame on the side table I will certainly pay a few hundred bucks.

That said, any news on an updated Aria type phone coming this winter? I like the size, so I was looking for a small Android phone. But I was hoping for higher res and maybe a faster processor in there.

I guess the Captivate would be a backup but its bigger and seemingly buggier?

Honeycomb eh? Glad Google is understanding that a larger screen and resolution requires an expanded interface. Can't just port over a phone UI to it. Hopefully the store is differentiated and categorized as well for tablets.

i might skip all the new phone nonsense and get that smokin hot archos 101. i'm happy with my blackberry and can tether that to the archos when needed.

I had the same thought, a Tab or Archos and a cool flip phone but I don't know if I can actually pull that off.

I love that design. It's not an iPad copycat, it's not boring, it's nice and sleek. Kinda reminds me of the Dell Streak.

Are you X10 owners happy with your phones?

I bricked my HTC Magic last week when trying to update to CM6 and the X10 is the best android phone Rogers has at the moment (The Galaxy S Captivate is sill AWOL even though it's been announced)

They're going for about $275-350 on Craigslist so I figure I can't go wrong...

EDIT: Actually, fuck that. The bootloader hasn't been hacked yet so there's no custom ROM options.

If I import a GSM phone from Japan/Europe and unlock it, it should work with Rogers, right?

The Galaxy Tab commits the same sin the iPad does for me - it doesn't have suitable I/O options other than a proprietary connector. I want a standard USB and SD card reader slot in these things. They're big enough to accommodate them. One of the biggest use cases I can see for these tablets in my personal use is in photography, previewing photos on the go with a larger screen.

I can't really see myself going for one until then.

yes it is, but for me, no market = no buy. What is this "no market" policy everyone talks about. Do they have to pay google ? I thought it was an integral part of Android, it's half of the value IMO.

Or maybe I misunderstand this and you can still access the apps some other way ?

Yeah, they have to pay for Google's apps, and they also have to meet certain hardware requirements. This allows Google to make (a small amount of) money from Android (appeasing investors, etc.) and also allows them to curb fragmentation (i.e., devs won't have to worry about their Market apps being broken on a device because it lacks something.)

Hey, I opened a new Google doc for tracking the current and upcoming Android devices. The OP will probably get a facelift.... sometime within the next month. :P

Reply with any I forgot, thanks. I hope to open it up to public editing soon, but I'm hesitant because the Wave I was using before was destroyed.

Archos 101 ($300, mid-October) - Of all the Archos tablets, we're probably most excited about this 10.1-incher. Form factor-wise, the .5-inch thick tablet is plenty thin, and at .93-pound, it felt really light in hand compared to the iPad. The 1024 x 600-resolution, capacitive touchscreen was responsive and the 1GHz processor gave it enough power to play a 720p video. Like the 70, it has a front-facing VGA cam as well as USB and HDMI ports. It's also got a kickstand on the back that allows you to prop it up at a nice angle for typing on the on-screen keyboard. Obviously, there's a number of more Android tablets hitting soon, but this one definitely seems like a new contender in our book.

really, does anyone thing that archos is gonna sell this at $300? it's got flash 10.1 support and froyo too? sure the applibs marketplace isn't the full marketplace but it's decent. plus, these babies i'm sure can be hacked to get the full marketplace on them and god knows what else.

here's the applibs site

Well, with the iPad you could use the camera kit to export you photos to it quickly. It is just a small dongle. The Tab will most likely have similar.

Man after hearing that T-mobile is going to stop selling the MotoCLIQ soon, which basically means they given up supporting the phone, I've decided that the next phone i'm getting is going to be one that comes with a stock Android rom. None of that SENSE, MotoBLur and custom GUI shit for me. This is bullshit.... Hopefully we MotoCLIQ owners get to see the 2.1 update even though i'm running a leaked 2.1 on mine.

Good riddance.

The CLIQ was one of the worst phones I've ever had.

The problem isn't getting a skinned phone - the Droid X and Sense phones are getting support - it's getting cheaper budget phones.

Droid 2/Droid X owners with the new Blur will be supported for a while - those are the more expensive AAA hero phones. The cheaper, no hype, free or $50 on contract phones with weak as hell specs won't be.

Feel free to get a Sense or Blur phone...but if it's a 3.2 inch, 528mhz phone then it's just being thrown out there for the cheaper mainstream market and won't be upgraded in a timely fashion or ever because the manufacturers don't make those phones for the enthusiasts who care about upgrades and want the cutting edge - they're buying a phone that's outdated day 1, why should they?

It seems like Cowon has finally jumped aboard and will be using android in an upcoming product. Rumors have been going around for a while that the Cowon D3 PMP will be using android.

hey Canada GAF, do I have to buy a phone from Telus, Rogers, Fido? or can I buy the phone somewhere else and get them to provide the data plan?
Yes you can buy it and then choose which company you want to go with.

Probably the smaller manufacturers like Huawei?

Not interested. I've got plenty of dongles and accessories and the like. I don't need more and I certainly don't want them for a device that's intended to be highly totable, elegant and self-contained. I'll wait until the second gen of the tablet revolution if they're all going to milk the first gen like this.

Bah, no one wants a Huawei phone. I mean right now I have an iphone 4 but I always intended to get an android phone afterward because I'm a geek and I fiend new shit.

But for some reason I refuse to use these UIs the companies have.

Anyone know how soon Samsung will be pushing out 2.2 for the galaxy phones? I'm thinking about getting a captivate in the next week or so, but would really like 2.2 asap.

Also someone said you can only install stuff from the marketplace on the default setup? Anyways to get around this on a captivate without having to root?

What's the best deal I can get on an upgrade on a family plan for this phone? (I'm not the primary line).

Any complaints or reasons why I should stay away from this phone???

The update will probably be OTA, direct from Samsung. You can't install non-market apk's initially, but you can use Android Central's Sideload Wonder Machine and install them in less than 10 seconds: http://www.androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine

Not sure about the other question, but the phone is a great choice, and I recommend it

Is the captivate the best android phone on AT&T? I've been using a 8100 blackberry Pearl for years now and I think I want to get a new phone. I was always planning to go to the iPhone but I've been growing more interested in android phones over the past few months. Also, does anyone know the contract renewal price for the captivate at Costco? Someone was mentioning to me last month it was $99.99, but I am not entirely sure.

The best Android phone on ATT is one you can buy unlocked, from anywhere in the world

but sold by Att? probably. I'm not sure of the renewal price at Cosco, but it's only $80 at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TLMQG8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I know it's not going to be popular here but anybody have the motorola charm or have seen a demo of it. I really like the form factor and don't really mind that much about the small screen. I don't know much about Blur though.

Yeah. I guess you're right about the unlocked phone, but your other comment did help me with the pricing. The family account version is $99.99, but I think that is the same price or better than Costco. Thanks.

Hey if that wonder machines works on the captivate fine with me! I'd rather just do that then rooting the phone at 1st anyways. Thanks for the info!

Yeah saw the $100 on amazon, and just figured I'd ask price wise. Think I'll just order on Amazon in the new few days since I can use the program to side load.

Then you can count me into the throng of people wanting 2.2 to hit for their android phone! :lol

So I jumped into the Android world today, bought a Samsung Galaxy Europa, seems to be a new budget Android phone (€150), exclusive to Europe, running 2.1.

Looking forward to writing my first Android "app" :)

Why would you want a netbook with Android?
I don't know. Chrome OS isn't here yet, I want a netbook, this thing came along with great specs. I've never used Android so I don't know what it's like or whether it could be suited to a netbook. Toshiba are apparently making significant changes.

Hey,

My poor phone is on its last legs and I'm looking at getting the Samsung galaxy s as its replacement.
does anyone know the following?

A) when/are Telstra ever going to bring this phone out? I called them and no one seems to know anything. I went in and asked but they guy said there was nothing on his order screen which dates ahead 3 months!

B) Failing Telstra bring out the phone (i was under the impression that they would release something similar to the captivate version) is it possible to swap the covers between the normal release and the captivate version?
I'm interested in this as the captivate back cover looks a million times better than the plastic version and if so where can i find a cover? eBay don't have them that i could find.

cheers

I'm in Australia btw (prob could have guessed that)

So while my Galaxy S is in for repair I picked up a Palm Pre for pretty cheap. At least I have a backup phone now, lol.

Anyway, I am very impressed with this little phone and especially Web OS. It is so polished and smooth, and very easy to use. I hope some of this rubs off on Android. Pretty impressed with the app catalog too. Tempted to buy Angry Birds to play on it. I know I will when I get my Galaxy S back. Any who, its a shame they could not keep going and get this OS on some newer phones.

And a new Challenger Appears:

The freshly announced dual-core Orion promises to whip us all into a frenzy of geek lust with "5 times the 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung," 1080p video encoding and decoding at 30fps, embedded GPS, a native triple display controller, and on-chip HDMI 1.3a interface. Those last two bits mean you can drive two displays on your mobile device while feeding a third, such as a HDTV, all thanks to the one all-powerful chip inside. Availability for "select customers" is coming late this year, with mass production set for the first half of 2011. To say we're looking forward to it would be a massive understatement.

x10 is so-so, not very good at all. Lots of shitty design choices although the firmware update has improved things a little.

You can buy from the states or whatever but you MUST check with your chosen provider first to see if the phone will work, and sometimes they'll just say "maybe".

I really wish we had better Android phones in Canada, ugh.

We do have two of the best on the market right now with the Galaxy S on Bell and the Desire on Telus.

I love the hardware improvement as much as the next tech geek but there really isn't much on the market that would take advantage of all this power right now.

actually i think we have some of the best selection available right now (desire, galaxy, legend) which is very different from the usual old crap we get force fed up here...
