Just ran a very quick test while lying in bed, located my position to 3m in about 15secs.

Only problem so far is wifi sometimes not coming back on after screen time out. It's not every time though, so not a deal breaker yet.
 
So just to be clear the chance of AT&T getting an Android Phone that actually has 2.2 on it this year is basically close to 0% right?

this year, yes. Rumors are that the next moto phone that will supposedly ship with gingerbread is coming to ATT first, but that won't even be revealed until CES in early Jan. If it comes a few weeks later to Verizon but has LTE, then poor ATT
 
Ugh I hate buying a cell phone. It's like upgrading my computer. I never want to pull the trigger cause better shit is always coming.

Ugh.. Android isn't gonna have 2.2 on AT&T and all the Win 7 phones I want aren't on AT&T. Plus I'm worried about the browser on Win 7 Phones. I can easily see why some people say it's like AT&T is just saying you can just get an iphone instead and fuck the rest. :/

The Galaxy S phones should be getting Froyo this year, they already started with the European version.
 
Yeah, I was confused cause I know the captivate on at&t is supposed to get 2.2 anytime now. It already leaked and everything, so I don't know why its taking so long.
 
Im getting the captivate this week too and the thing I keep telling myself about the whole "when's the right time to jump in?" debate is that the galaxy s phones are in the hands of a lot of developers, and the phone should be well supported by the scene for at least a couple years, carriers be damned.

yeah forgot about this. Nothing is official, but i would expect the captivate to have 2.2 by the end of the year
 
My personal opinion is that if you're not on board within a week a phone launches, you might as well wait for the next one if getting a new phone is not an immediate need.

A week is a bit of an exaggeration but I ordered my Nexus One as soon as it was available. Looking just at the hardware not at the hacker support that it has, I don't know if I would have recommended buying it 2-3 months after its release when the EVO 4G was about to drop.

I usually want the latest and greatest but thats me.

I think it also depends on time of year. Towards the second half there is usually a lot of stuff getting released.

That said if you want latest and greatest, its probably true, if you are content with above average, the best bang for the buck is probably waiting about 6 months after something comes out for a near "free" deal on what you want.
 
Ack. Turns out the desire z is coming out on bell in 2 weeks. I don't need a qwerty slider, but I do want an HTC phone more than I want a samsung one.

What would you guys do? Break contract with Rogers (28 months into 36 month contract) and go to bell, or just stick with Rogers and enjoy my new captivate sometimes this week. Anyone tried to get an opposing carrier to buy out another carriers contract?

I'm thinking bell might be a good choice at this point because they are getting better phones sooner.

Why force yourself to pay extra to cancel your plan, then be stuck with an thicker/uglier phone? I like HTC too, but the Captivate is sexy as fuck.

I'm still waiting for the Streak to launch. I wanna see how big it is in person before I jump on it or the Captivate.

Bell is selling an unlocked Desire Z, so yes. No word on an UMTS Desire HD
 
Quick simple question.

I have a HTC Legend Android 2.1 and I have an irritating thing with the SMSing system. Whenever I bring up my Inbox and check the latest messages from a person, it never shows the latest SMS. I have to manually scroll all the way down to the bottom to read it, and if I have plenty of message conversations with a friend it takes some time to get to the most recent message.

Anyone know how I can make it automatically scroll to the bottom/show the most recent message for me?
 
My Desire has had to go away for repair :(

Using maps/GPS or video makes the phone overheat, then it reboots. Sometimes a good few times.
Hopefully Vodafone can fix it, but reading their forums, it would seem that i will be very lucky if they do. May have to send it to HTC, which will apparently mean i wont have it for quite a while!

Don't carriers there honor manufacturer warranty? I'd ask for a swap if they can't fix it in a timely fashion. We never deal with the manufacturers in the US besides Apple (unless you buy unlocked obviously).

Does it do that with third party messaging apps? Try Handcent...though that behavior is really odd for the stock app.

Yeah, they do. However, what i have read from people in the same situation is that Vodafone do what they can, but whatever they do doesn't seem to solve the issue - even though they think it does.
 
T-Mobile US: Is it worth getting a G2, or should I wait for the MyTouch 4G? Or is there something else worth waiting for?

I've been rocking a rooted MyTouch 3g (original), but now that TMO is openly supporting tethering, I'm happy to upgrade.

Now that doesn't sound much different than US companies :lol

Finding an overheating problem on a phone seems like it would be very difficult; surprised they even attempt it.
 
I never heard of this company until last week, but I like their style.

I've been using the G2 for a week and I've been very happy with it. I need a hardware keyboard so that narrowed the selection of android phones quite a bit. Was considering the Droid, but the G2 has a far better keyboard for me (separated keys).

My only issue so far (besides wishing it was rooted already), is that the message notification is a little stupid. It only flashes intermittently, so unless you're looking at the phone for a long time, it's not possible to see at a glance that you've received messages. Have no idea how that got past UI testing. The message light needs to either be on all the time when you have unread messages or flash quickly.

Speeds with HSDPA are pretty fast where I can access it (pretty much everywhere in NW DC and Alexandria/Arlington). Not as fast as the wireless in my apartment (n), but significantly faster than edge and 3G.

Thanks for the impressions. Did you get an OTA update that enabled tethering? I'm seeing mixed reports online about whether that update is real or not. Tethering is a dealbreaker for me.
 
any new android phones coming to verizon in the short future? currently on a samsung moment with sprint and get horrible reception at home..looking to switch to verizon, im kinda leaning towards the fascinate, but also like the bigger screen size of the droid x, but i hear the X isnt as smooth as the samsung, any suggestions?

if you're getting horrible reception at home, call sprint customer service. they've been known to hand out free microcells that give you perfect reception if that's the case.

Another thing is it looks like the MyTouch 4G has some kind of hybrid-Sense on it. I personally think it looks really cool but if you're not a sense fan then maybe it wouldn't. I'd check some videos on it.

I'm still using my Nexus One and don't see any phones that are any better for it on TMobile but if I didn't happen to have it I would personally wait on the MyTouch 4G then decide between it and the G2.

I'm actually thinking of trying the MyTouch 4G port for Nexus One when a few more issues get worked out.

Well on Verizon there are 3 phones coming out apparently on September 11th. The first is the Droid Pro; 1 ghz processor, 3.1 inch screen, and a portrait keyboard. The HTC Merge, which is a landscape slider, 3.8 inch screen and 800 mhz processor (pretty much the Desire Z). Finally there is the Droid 2 Global; 3.7 inch screen, 1.2 ghz processor.

Not sure where you are located, but the Streak has been out for 2 months or so if not more.

I own one currently and I am not sure I can recommend it. For the record I had a Captivate among several other Android and every iPhone to date.

The Streak is quite large... much more so than the EVO/DroidX. It's hard to find a person who doesn't ask me what phone I have every time I bring out this massive device from my pocket. I found the EVO to be quite easy to handle, but the Streak proves to be a bit much.

I like the ability to see so much on my screen, but I'm not quite sure it's so practical for everyday as your primary device. I can only bring myself to say the hardware is "OK". I'd much rather have a 4.3" device if one were available with my carrier.

Software wise the 1.6 android version it ships with is competent, but screams of being dated. It loves to be stuck in landscape mode for several things, ignoring the fact we like to use our device in more than one way.

I am currently running a custom ROM based on Froyo which has much of the glory of Froyo working, but yet something as simple as call waiting doesn't work.

All these things add up to me not recommending the phone. Perhaps once Dell release their official 2.2 which is supposed to be coming before EOY I can change my opinion.

Given that the Captivate isn't perfect either, I'd still recommend it to the average user over the Streak.

It's definitely coming, it's just a question of when (probably whenever T-Mobile does the roll out of their tethering plan ($15/month, I believe)). This will probably be in Nov, or whenever Verizon rolls out their version of the G2, the Merge.
 
tried to get myself a free phone today but rogers called my bluff, so I reduced my plan to the minimum and told the lady I was going to just wait for it to expire instead of cancelling right away.

then I called bell and they said the best plan they could give me was $30 more than my current rogers plan (they quoted me $107) for a plan with HALF the data. seriously, fuck canada's wireless carriers. the reason I called bell was to see if I could get in on their free vibrant promotion this week at future shop but fuck them in the neck if they dont even want to attempt to work for it.

so now I'm back on my old plan at rogers after a confusing follow-up call to rogers. FML. wondering if I should just keep waiting and take my sweet freedom in hand next august.

I'm super interested in this samsung nexus 2 rumor thats going around. that right there would be my dream handset. hmmmmmm. jumping in sucks, I have to admit, thats one way where apple has got it right.

Thanks - I really hope that's not the case (tying the tether update to a charge), esp. since the g2 is not rootable (so far). No way I'm paying for tethering when I can tether for free after rooting.

The OTA update won't come with a charge. But "official" T-Mo tethering will come with a $15/month fee (Verizon is $20/month for official tether; AT&T is $20/month as well, I believe; Sprint, I think, is free, but their coverage tends to suck in my area so they're not an option).

I have no intention of paying the monthly charge since I tether only infrequently when I'm flying. I will just use PDANet, a free app you can download from the Android market which doesn't require root on the phone for tether. I'm actually typing this post on my laptop which is tethered to my phone via PDANet right now - works great. My phone is not rooted.

I use tethering to get my iPad online, so PDAnet won't work (unless they've added wifi tethering?). I guess I just need a rootable phone, so I'll wait and see how that pans out for the MyTouch 4G and G2.

OK, but just to clarify: for those of us using the G2, you do not need root to use PDAnet to tether (either via USB cable or via Bluetooth).

It is uncertain at the moment. There will be no HDMI out I can pretty much guarantee, but the Milestone 2 (Europe) is getting an upgraded camera and there are some indications the the Global will get that as well.

As far as I'm concerned this blows away every other announced Android tablet. Seems there'll be models with HSDPA and GPS as well, not clear if they come with the stock £250 model.
