I can't understand how you could think Safari is shitty. Have you used it? Grab an iPhone/iPad and put it next to GNex/Nexus 7 Chrome. Safari is absolutely more responsive in scrolling, zooming, and rendering. Android browsers have a come a long way but they're still not as fluid and 1:1 responsive; though they're very good. You could argue that the features of Chrome are better, but I still don't think Safari is shitty even in that comparison.

Edit: FUD. iOS hasn't been tied to iTunes in a while now. My parents have an iPad that has never synced or connected to a PC.

What syncing software does WP8 use? Honest question.

So such as being its only main OS that is being pushed by Google it needs to offer you more flexibility
It has to give you a little bit of what PC and Mac OS x offers

What is being said in the video rings true

The iPhone and WP phones MS And apple are trying to sell you are purpose bulit appliances that are sort of companion devices to there windows and Mac os x line

But Google's main OS line is Android so in a sense its not just an appliance like what apple or Microsoft are trying to sell you.


Its alot of little things but when it comes down too it both apple and Microsoft's approach are heavily restricted in terms of a mobile OS for phones and tablets and that's fine if you want a meal that's ready made for you with little or no say in what goes in or out of it

But android makes the meal and then gives you a recipes book to make your own damn meals
And there in lies the freedom and flexibility. Some love and some hate it but theres freedom of choice in the manner.

But ultimately this feels about right in how each respective company's policy towards there mobile OS.
 
That isn't Apples mindset at all. They don't see iOS as a appliance OS. Apple is very blunt in their belief tablets will take over the entire PC industry and the iPad and other tablets will replace the Mac and PC's for most consumers.

Android is definitely the closest you can get to a symbian phone (minus the reception of nokia phones). Nokia seems to want to add some features back (I noticed WP7.8 on the lumias will enable bluetooth file sharing, for example) but we'll see how much they can do with regards to microsoft's restrictions.

I actually hate chrome on android. The stock browser (absent on the Nexus 7) has always performed better in every way on my galaxy nexus. Quick controls are just icing on top of the cake, especially with the improvements they got in 4.1.

Also technically, you're tied to iTunes, be it the mobile app or the PC/Mac app, if you want to store music on your phone :P

Basically this was the breaking point that pushed me towards android in The first place back in 2010

Managing and syncing with iTunes on a pc / Zune software is enough to make me vomit out a lung...

IPod touch. 2G was okay it was my first touch device but I hated HATED that it was tied down to iTunes

When I heard the iPhone would do the same

Windows phone is tied to syncing software? I though Zune was always completely optional and that it had the free drag drop, buy from and wherever you want format?
 
oh yeah, I got iTunes match last year so I just have constant access to my whole music library. Haven't synced since last November, so nice.

Unless they decide to merge or scrap there Mac OS X line with iOS

They'll never do that though maybe they offer up a Mac osx/iOS tablet one day like what Ms lS doing with there surface priced accordingly of course

I really don't see the ipad truely replacing windows or Mac OS X for that matter anytime soon or ever unless they offer a tablet with full Mac osx functionality

But is that even an ipad anymore ?

Safari isn't shitty. I was talking about ie(internet explorer). How else are you supposed to put music on a iPhone without iTunes? Can I go straight to a website and download a video/mp3 through the browser?

He's not saying it will replace OS X devices. He's saying it will replace OS X or Windows devices for most consumers.

My mother for instance, is someone that used to fight the mouse just playing solitaire, and has never used Email, video calling or chat services until she got an iPad this year.
 
Zune and its overly complicated and buggy software was one of the main reasons I switched from WP.

WP8 is supposed to cloud sync with W8/RT and theres supposed to be a multiplatform phone sync client more along the lines of Windows Mobile's sync.

It's an appliance OS. The walled garden is proof of that. Do you have access to functionality that simulates a real computer? Sure.

That doesn't negate the fact that the physical device tied to the software is intentionally gimped in order to prevent full control over said device.

To be fair the S3 has wireless charging as well (and it was announced before the Nokia one). I agree though, the NFC is great. Just look at what Xperia Smartags are doing or how Xperia T pretty much interacts with all home hardware that has NFC.

palm pre did it before the S3 and both the pre and the 920 have it built in. the S3 requires an additional $40 backplate.

Thought the S3 only needed the charger accessory and I didn't know about palm at all actually... but still the point stands.

Nice, they had a similar campaign with the S2. Still, I'm really looking forward to Optimus G and Xperia T to see if the next big thing isn't only arriving at the end of the month. From what I've seen and read from the Xperia T, it most certainly seems to triumph over S3.

Also doesn't the S3 have Jellybean already?

Nope. As far as I'm aware, that update is coming October (unless you root + flash rom)
 
Is there any other phone with the same or higher resolution than the Galaxy Note 1? (1280x800)
The Note 2 drops it down to 1280x720.

Everuthing except tablets is on 16:9 now, the Lumia 920 is the closest at this point with 1280x768 in 15:9.
 
You know what I find really annoying that I was thinking about lately. Well I think about it every year around this time.

How apple is able to announce a product and release it soon after. No bullshit, no vagueness no ambiguousness. Phone announced --> phone coming very soon almost world wide, and worldwide soon after.

I should credit Samsung, with their galaxy line they've gotten better at this as well. Everyone else should be ashamed though.

what is the point? I never said the 920 did it first or was alone in doing it. of all phone to be released this yr, the 920 still stands alone in being the only phone to have wireless charging built into it without the need to purchase an additional backplate.

That's kinda cause Apple creates their own conferences where they annouce the phones. Except for Samsung most of the others announce at the big shows and then have to wait till they actually produce the phone. Samsung was able to get S3 out within a month of the announcement as it also had its very own conference. Sony, on the other hand, announce ION at CES and didn't release it till like May.
(Having said that, Xperia T was announced at IFA and is scheduled to launch by the end of the month).

I was kinda surprised as to why Nokia announced Lumia 920 when it is nowhere near a release at it's own press conference unrelated to any tech event.

whose fault is it all really though? It's theirs. No one has a gun to their head to announce things at a certain time. If they aren't ready for release, or there's no release date, save the announcement.

It just comes off as really unprofessional and amateurish in comparison to apple, and now samsung.

When they announce the phones, they're really announcing them to the carriers, since they don't really sell phones directly. That's the biggest hurdle to overcome.

If they wait until the carrier announces something, you end up with the Razr situation where everything is leaked and known about by the time the announcement takes place.

They just want their name out there.

Carrier free phones usually hit the market close to announcements (Nexus stuff/Sony phones in europe/asia, nokia's old stuff).

Probably to gain market and shareholder confidence in the company. Nokia's stock could've taken a huge hit if Apple had announced something amazing and Nokia had nothing announced for the future.

Also I wouldn't call less than two months "nowhere near release". There was a time when Nokia announced new phones like 12 months before you could buy them.

Oh i agree with you. Nokia should have had the conference in November and Lumia 920 be availble for pre-order when the conference is over straight away.

It's just that before apple starting doing their conferences no one really thought about it this way. Companies announced their tech for the first half a year at CES or WPC and then for the second half of the year at IFA. It's great that Samsung and Sony are now catching up, though and I'm happy apple started the trend of 'its available now'

It's actually pretty damn useful as is the NFC technology altogether. What you've described seems to fit Siri's unveiling last year more accurently than wireless charging.

none of that makes it less stupid. If there was no precedent then fine, if that's the case then that's the case. But there is precedent for better. Apple has always been good at it and now Samsung seems to be able to do it. You announce a phone when it's ready to release, aka carriers have already seen the phone and decided what they're going to do and when. And then you make it happen in a reasonable time frame.

It just makes the ones that don't look really bad. Probably loses them a shitton of business as well. You know how many people are going to get an iphone 5 or an S3 rather than wait for other companies to get their shit together release date wise? Almost everybody.

That's true too. I remember the S2 having like a pretty huge delay for the american release. It's ridiculous how much power do the carriers have over there. It was only because the S2 was a success that the S3 launched 2 months after its annoucement in the US.

Yeah but honestly people will forget the hype about Lumia 920 by the time it launches and Nokia's shares actually dropped after the press conference anyway.

Depends on if Nokia's marketing team is able to generate hype before release. It's not impossible.

Also Nokia's shares have risen over 40% from July to today because of the Lumia conference. The shares dropped after the show but now they have gained that drop back.
 
Also, to add to what I said. With the LG event next week, where they're likely to announce their first super competitive phone (optimus G), who wants to bet it's also a clusterfuck of "who knows" when it comes to release date. "sometime before the end of the year" I'm sure. HTC also has an event. I'm guessing this problem will be in full display next week. Hope to be proven wrong. Probably won't be.

It's just a different business dynamic. Apple makes a phone and sells it to carriers. Samsung makes a phone for the specific carrier to sell.

Clearly the former is better, but smaller companies can't take that risk because they don't have guaranteed sales.

It looks bad to us who keep up with stuff, but regular people don't really give a shit about that kinda stuff. People are still buying old phones en masse.

The lack of anything but Samsung, Apple and Nokia is worrying to be honest. It's really sad when Samsung becomes the de-facto only android maker in people's minds.

I give HTC credit for the One series. Its magnificently designed. The One X is my personal favorite and best looking phone design of this year thus far by a country mile. And Ive used a One X long enough to even appreciate how much better they did with Sense compared to their entire 2011 line. Its just that the S3 came and sucked the air out of the One line completely. The S2 built so much momentum, that when Samsung managed to deliver with the S3, it was curtains for the one X.

HTC has a chance though, next year they need to again make a fantastic phone with the TwoX and yet again dial back Sense the same way they did this year. If they manage that they will probably finally get some momentum. The OneX afterall still has the absolute best display I have seen this year. Its fucking gorgeous.
