Android, iOS, WP8 phone debate thread

hey, so i was wondering, what's up with "lenses" as a feature. aren't there already a bunch of iOS, Android and even WP apps that already do stuff like that without a fancy catchphrase?

The difference is that in WP8 you access all of the camera apps aka lenses directly within the camera. It makes third party camera apps first class citizens along with the default camera app. So if you want to take a picture using instagram, you don't have to find and launch the instagram app to take the picture. You just launch the camera with the dedicated camera button like normal, and then you can switch to the instagram lens.

any reason not a single phone looks like this yet ? near bezel - less ? and "nearly paper thin and practically no weight ?

2017 ?

gnex is close but theres still bezels on the top and bottom and a sort of a phat back

put the front facing camera on top of the phones bezel

have a touch panel in the back of the phone ala PSP vita for scrolling websites so you can scroll without touching the screen

and make it 6" and 1080p

2009:

Apart from the bottom hardware buttons, the screen is pretty dominant with regard to the bezel. I love this phone.

Wow, I find that phone really beautiful! Can I have some infos about it? It reminds me of the LG Chocolate <3

Also, I'm closely following this thread, thinking about a new phone for the end of the year but I must admit that I'm not really fond of the 500-600€/$ price point... So, what kind of nice phone will be medium priced, let's say around 300€? (Android or WP8)

This link should work.

I'd imagine dropping it on it's side would suck royally. Bent frame, cracked glass, destroyed LCD, damaged internals.

The phone you quoted is 299!

It is the htc 8s with beats audio. compared to the high end device lower screen resolution, but I think it is a pretty sexy device

not sure if this is the place to ask this but I just started a contract w/ my sister w/ verizon and got the iphone 4 for free. However I'm thinking about getting the galaxy s3 or a win8 phone instead. Is there any way to return the iphone and still pay the 200 or 300 for a s3? thanks in advance!

How long has it been? Try calling them.

haha...just got it today. Should I just go back to the same place I got it from? thanks for your reply!

Oh, hah, yeah just go back and take all your reciepts and stuff with you. They normally give you a 14 day window or so, depending on the carrier. You should be fine. They should be more than happy to accept your ~$200 bucks for a different phone.

yeah, you're doing an upgrade. Trust me, they want nothing more than your money.

so.. kind of like not setting a default camera app on an Android device with a dedicated camera button?

It's running on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Inside there's a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera.

>The real attraction, though, is the 5-inch full HD Super LCD 3 screen — it's truly a sight to behold. The Super LCD 2 seen in HTC's previous flagship One X was arguably the best panel on the market, but we think its successor is the new champion. Color reproduction is excellent, the 440ppi resolution is astonishing, and the J Butterfly's slightly convex glass makes the image look like it's melting off the side of the phone. It doesn't feel overbearing in the hands, though; the phone's 9.1mm thinness and slim bezel make it surprisingly compact, and we found it was easily pocketable.

Good thing about HTC coming out with a 1080p cellphone screen is atleast Samsung will almost be forced to put one in the Galaxy 4. Won't do another HTC phone as long as they play their bootloader game and especially not with a non replaceable battery.

I guess despite attempts to stop the trolling, this whole:

"What? They made something better than X? But why? X is clearly as good as we need, and anything beyond it is ridiculous!"

is going to become a new meme for PhoneGAF. It wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the extraordinary rate at which mobile tech has been moving for the past..... oh..... 4 years or so. At the rate that improvements are made to this tech, the tears will be overwhelming; and I still, for the life of me cannot figure out what the crying is about.

Edit: Awesome..... coldfoot is here.

Good hardware is nothing without good software to take advantage of it. Many iOS apps haven't even yet been updated to take advantage of the larger screen on the iPhone 5, and I'm sure the situation is much worse on Android third party apps.

It seriously is wasteful and pointless. There is absolutely no reason why a resolution that high on a device so small is at all beneficial to users. It is not advancement for the sake of progress or improved user experience, it's advancement for the sake of bragging rights.

At the same time, it requires far more powerful GPUs, and therefore far bigger batteries, just for purposes of achieving the same performance and battery life.

It's wasteful, it's pointless, and no one without a microscope will notice it.

Its the htc thunderbolt all over again

The battery is 2500 mAh.

Alrighty then dL.

I just don't see the big deal, besides the camera maybe, from the existing lumia line

everyone in here is touting this to be the 2nd cumming....of Super Smart Phone Jesus Christ (no typo)

it'll be outdated in 2-3 months just like any other flag ship SP....
That's because pretty much every cool aspect of the Lumia line has nothing to do with the typical dick-waving that the usual Android and iPhones owners shout about.

The Lumia 920 isn't the thinnest and the lightest.
It doesn't have 2GB Ram, or a 5inch 1080p screen.

Nokia doesn't care about brute force, nor are they constantly trying to play the numbers game that insecure Android owners are always doing.

Nokia differentiates based on great and unique design, image stabalization that helps both pictures AND video, audio recording that puts every other phone to shame, Nokia apps that other hardware manufacturers aren't even close to offering (look at Apple's attempt to make Maps, while Nokia maps are killing it).

The things that make the Lumia 920 great, aren't the feeble points used by Android Manufacturers/Apple that easily get outdated in a few months. It's a great phone in it's functionality. You won't ever hear anyone bitch about fucking scrolling with Windows Phone 8, and here you have people still arguing about Android's pinch to zoom. That's pathetic.

i think you meant Galaxy Note III

there's no way Samsung, even with a Pentile Matrix, can make a 1080p panel small enough to work in a Galaxy S4 and keep the screen under 5"

it's because "i wish this phone has a better camera" wouldn't be in the top 5 of most wishlists, and might not even be in the top 10.

that's what i've been saying since QHD Pentile displays hit!

Maybe they will go up to 5 inches for the S4? Actually I would be surprised now if they didn't. They have to have some way to differentiate their new premium phone from the last one. Plus they won't want to be beaten by HTC in the premium phone market even if it is in something like screen size.

BULLSHIT. Pure bullshit.
You give people a phone with a great camera and they're ecstatic.

Most phone cameras are shit, and only now are consumers seeing truly great cameras in their phone, and it's a big selling point. It's like how browsing on the cellphones didn't matter to anyone when they were doing it on their shitty dumbphone that could barely load up a page, but once you get big touch screen with half-decent mobile browsers, everyone now uses the browsers on their phone.

A great camera is essential.

On the other hand, you making it seem like the Lumia 920's only great only feature is the camera, is disingenuous as well.

What would be in the top 5, or 10, then? I want a thinner phone? A lighter phone? A taller phone? An IRC app? More pixels? Real multitasking?
Exactly. You know what no one is asking for? A 1080p screen. People don't fucking care. They see a bright screen and they love it. The vast majority of people wouldn't be able to tell you which screen was better between a 800x480 super amoled screen set to high brightness versus a 720p screen on medium brightness.

People clamor for thinner phones, but as soon as they actually start using it, they'll give anything for better battery life. By now, most people have used one smartphone or another, and they now that they rather have a phone that lasts a day or two rather then being another 2mm thinner. The priorities of some phone manufacturers are ridiculous.

So this iPhone 5.

It's pretty nice. Converted a couple of my HD movies into a reasonable size for phones (4GB) and man, the screen sure is pretty.

Also, I hadn't really played any mobile games outside of shit like Fruit Ninja...so you can imagine how impressed I have been visually with Beat Hazard, Polara, Temple Run and Infinity Blade 2. I forgot how capable these phones are for gaming now. Visuals are definitely somewhere a little behind what I'd think the Vita is doing (though with decidedly inferior controls), but not as far behind as I expected.

I have another week or so to take it back, but damn...it really is all about the apps, and so many iOS apps do so many things right on this phone. Oh, and it makes calls too.

I love my Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

What other phone can you use as a computer?
You just connect your phone to a USB-hub, then connect a USB-harddrive, a mouse and keyboard, and a USB-soundcard and a HDMI-cable and voila :-)

and its so fast!

Honestly, this could be an interesting survey/thread between us gaffers: what are your 10 selling points for a phone, give us a predetermined list to avoid fantasy answers, collect the answers and maybe we'll have a few surprises! Although I'm sure we'll be far from the mass market choices ;)
