Hey android elite Gaf, due to financial constraints I'm stuck using a Samsung Intercept that just got Froyo.
How can I get the most out of it, which apps do you recommmend for browsing flash heavy sites and watching videos. I'm posting from the phone right now with no internet on the pc so searching around is a pain. halp

Being an EVO owner I must say that 4.3" is perfect for me. There was about a 24hr adjustment period coming from the iphone but now it fits in my pocket so well I never notice it's in there.

Not gonna come in here and say you are wrong, and maybe you are a little emo kid and wear skin tight jeans, but I never really notice my Droid X in my pocket. It's so thin and sleek.

You say you'd use a 4" phone max. I highly doubt you could tell the difference between a 4" phone in your pocket and a 4.3" phone in your pocket.

I think different folks different strokes, but here is how I reached that conclusion:

I went to Best Buy from work ( I wear suit pants just about everyday) and tried various phones. I would put it in my pocket then sit down. Maybe its the size of my pants/pockets/thighs whatever, but at 4 and especially 3.7 it fits well by aligning with my leg, at 4.3 its too large to fit down the side of the leg.

I guess the half inch extra overall length and width just makes all the difference. Not saying 4.3 is not for everyone, just that it does not work for me.

Thickness is a similar issue, I really like the Galaxy S phones for that, whereas the G2 feels like a huge brick.

^ Which is one of the beauties of the Android hardware we've been getting. Thankfully the higher end smart phones are sitting in the 3.5" - 4.3" sizes in which people can choose what they want.

With images of the Olympus, showing a 4.0" or 4.1" screen, I'm betting that the newer hardware will rest between the 4.0"-4.3" on the higher end phones and probably 3.5"-4.0" on the lower end phones.

Either way you slice it, the phones out now and the phones coming out oh so soon give an incredible amount of choice which is nice to have.

You guys should check out adw launcher ex...I can't believe how liquid smooth it is. I wonder if he is using gpu acceleration. Really cool transitions between screens and tons of features. Think it was between $3 and $4.

Do the emulators available all support keyboard controls and remapping (only really interested in NES, SNES and GBA)?

How is the emulation in Android? I've seen a couple of Youtube videos for the T-Mobile G2 and Yoshi's Island was pretty damn smooth.

Gonna wait until CES but will probably pick up a Desire Z because I love the form factor.

I use the free version on my galaxy tab and Droid X. Super awesome.

Emulation works pretty well on the higher end devices, even for psX. Though, I find it maddening to play on touch controls as my fingers can never find the dpad. I need a good suggestion for an external controller.

I'm in the exact same situation as you are. I'm looking to replace my cheap dumb phone early next year, and I was originally leaning towards the iPhone because my dad's shiny Galaxy S Vibrant didn't impress me all that much. After playing with the Desire Z though, it's likely going to be my choice (unless CES brings something great and new from HTC to either Bell or Telus but considering the Desire Z is brand new and the HD isn't even out in Canada yet, I doubt that'll be the case).

I don't even really need the keyboard, but the rest of the phone's style and features just have me sold on the thing.

Played with it again today, the keyboard is so nice. I'm just so damn bored of my iPhone. Got an iPhone 4 at launch but I'm so over it. Picked up an Omnia 7 but the crappy hardware has failed on me and I'm waiting on a warranty repair then it's onto eBay.

The combination of Swype and the keyboard is so appealing. I used Swype when I was playing with an Orange San Francisco. Swype for quick messages and keyboard for lengthier typing. Perfect.

I've weighed up the whole stock vs sense thing as well and sense on the Z is pretty damn nice. I'm not too sure on the status of custom ROMs etc on the Z but to be honest I'm not that fussed, especially when sense is at this level.

Where can I download Swype? I see nothing on the marketplace?

Phone is rooted if it matters.

You have to get it from the website and put it on your phone yourself. It isn't on the marketplace yet.

8mb pixel rear camera
Dual LED/Front Facing camera
HTC Sense 2.3

Dont know...

Price?
Launch Date?
Shipping with 2.2 or 2.3?
Dual processor?
Front facing camera resolution?

Cant wait for CES. Jan 6th cant get here fast enough!

Man, HTC's design department is really lazy atm. That's pretty much the HD7 without the camera button and the kickstand on other side. So boring.

There's only so much you can do with the slate phone form factor.

Love my desire z. Selling my galaxy s, it just feels like a toy in comparison. Sense UI is very polished too unlike crapwiz.

Totally agree. While the design is boring, the hardware inside is also a let down. For the first 4G phone, I would've thought they would used Qualcomm's newer dual-core especially since the battery life is such as issue.

It's not easy, I agree, but if others can do it, so can HTC (and they did it in the past). Just look at it, it's the same design as the HD7. They put the absolute minimum amount of effort in this. Same with the rest of the WP7 devices. It's just disappointing that another generic smartphone #4262 is coming from HTC.

http://phandroid.com/2010/12/29/new-android-trojan-found/

Just when you thought it was safe to run around installing any apk you can get your hands on. Mobile security team Lookout is reporting a new trojan that is making the rounds, dubbed “Geinimi”. It’s essentially being “grafted” on to legitimate applications, mainly games, and distributed into third party App stores. So far, it has only been downloaded from applications hosted by Chinese App Markets.

Well, I think the HD7 is the smartest looking slate phone out there. I like how the tapered earpiece/speakers are symmetrical. Back looks sort of cheap, though.

By comparison, the MyTouch 4G looks like there were about 12 people laying out each segment of the phone, and it looks like a mess.

Thunderbolt is the top of the Desire HD and the lip of the HD7. Why not just use the HD7 design when it looks so damn good and create a nicer chassis?

Different strokes, I guess. I wish they'd try to differentiate the phones a bit.

The Moto tablet won't have 4G? Can't wait for the next Engadget podcast. :lol

i dont know where to go with this, so if it doesnt belong here, i apologize and if ou could direct me to where i could talk about this, that would be great

so recently i went to visit my cousins place and and i noticed that she got a new phone, a mytouch 3g. i asked if she still had her motorola cliq(her first phone) and she said yes and just gave it to me. now the phone works just fine and all, and i even updated it to 2.1 today and plan on rooting in the future, but unfortunately, it took some damage....

or should i say some severe damage. is there a way i could go about fixing this, or is there a site that specializes in this sort of repair?

how did you do that mate? the screen is completley wrecked, did you drop it? did it explode? its important.

from what she told me, she dropped it. i dont know any more than that. like i mentioned, every other function works perfectly so theres no internal damage.

Maybe I missed it, but has anyone on GAF posted their impressions/thoughts on the Nexus S yet?
I bought one and I'm loving it!

The phone does have a very plastic feel to it, but it is an insanely light device. The screen looks absolutely amazing; however, it does attract finger prints like a magnet. The battery life will get you through the day, but you do have to keep an eye on it if you're a heavy user.

or the LCD screen is not fine:

googled: mytouch 3g screen replacement

Its certianly fixable, you will probs find some instructions on XDAdevolopers, try adding that to the search. :)

sorry for just now getting back to you, but like someone mentioned before me, its the cliq that im looking for replacement parts for. thanks for your help anyway, though.

HTC legend user here, this is my first android/smartphone/touchscreen anything, what do i need to know to make my phone even more awesome?

Just make sure it's on 2.2! :) If you fancy it too you could root it and toy around with some custom ROMs for it.

hmm, im with virgin so no 2.2 and rooting my phone will probably be my only path to consistent software updates. :lol

lol at that's what she said, doesn't get old.

So I got my Nexus S, I like it a lotlotltotlot BUT does anyone know any earbuds that are compatable with these android phones (volume controls, song control, mic, etc...) that AREN'T in-ear? Like the iphone ones, just normal round ones. Anyone know any other than the apple ones?

Shit is like a lost relic. Somewhere in Canada would be preferable but I'm having such a hard time finding any at all I'll take it from anywhere.

Those seem hard to find these days, other than the iPhone ones. HTC phones come with those type of earphones (not in ear) and they have play, back, forward buttons. I hate in ear ones like those that came with my Galaxy S.
