I was going to get the captivate but I'm thinking I should at least wait till the end of the month before I upgrade.
Please do.

The phones coming out should be referenced at Gingerbread 2.3 and not stuck on 2.2 like some of the older models.

Pandora is sweet, don't know why I never looked into it before.

what is Pandora One? Just did the free trial, didn't mention price anywhere...

36$ for a year. All it does is remove the ads as far as I know.

Looking forward to some inspired hardware design come CES.

Android used to be so fun! Now everything looks like the Nexus 2. Long live fresh designs like the Hero, those were the days!

Hey android elite Gaf, due to financial constraints I'm stuck using a Samsung Intercept that just got Froyo.
How can I get the most out of it, which apps do you recommmend for browsing flash heavy sites and watching videos. I'm posting from the phone right now with no internet on the pc so searching around is a pain. halp

I have nothing to help you with, but I'm interested in what you think of the Intercept? I'm thinking of dropping my contract , and the plans for providers like Verizon look pretty expensive now (and I signed this contract for my G1 without having to worry about data tiers, too). I played with a Sprint Intercept at a store, and it froze constantly. Is your (Virgin Mobile?) Intercept OK?

And can I expect fairly good Android phones on services like Virgin and Boost in 2011? (Virgin has only the Intercept, for example. Or I could get a BlackBerry Curve.) Or will I have to stick to T-Mobile and its competitors for a fair to good Android phone?

LP is great but I switched to adw launcher (ex paid version). Check it out as well.

Have they made adw more smooth? I remember giving it a try, but I had to go back to LP because it so smooth and fast.

.Samsung Electronics Says It Sold 10 Million Galaxy S Smartphones
Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second-largest mobile phone maker, met a target to sell 10 million units of the Galaxy S model last year as it competes with Apple Inc. in the market for smartphones.

It’s the company’s most successful smartphone, devices that can play music, videos and surf the web, Jason Kim, a Samsung spokesman said in a phone interview today. The Suwon, South Korea-based manufacturer began selling the model in June.

Samsung is using Google Inc.’s Android software to compete with Apple’s iPhone and narrow the gap with leader Nokia OYJ. The South Korean phone maker expects to double sales of smartphones this year as more customers use wireless devices to make video calls, read electronic books and use social networking sites.

Cupertino, California-based Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter ended in September. Its latest model, the iPhone 4, was also introduced in June.

So Vizio just showed off their Rosebowl spot, and you can see their tablet and phone. Question is...is this honeycomb or a custom skin?

I'd say custom skin. We'll know more about Honeycomb at CES.

the top black status bar gives the impression it may be android 2.3 but a custom skin could also do that.
I thought Gingerbread got rid of the "AM/PM" next to the time.

Here's hoping we get some pure google phones at CES

I'm pretty sure that's just a setting for 12/24 hr clocks.

Why the fuck doesn't Android support LEAP encryption by default? I hate how incomplete this OS feels at times. :lol

Lookimg for some advice from the android exoerts here.

I'm still rocking a (rooted) mytouch 3g first-gen android phone from TMO. It's running a version of 2.2, and I use it often to tether 3G to my iPad.

I'm not really due for an upgrade until May or June, but The TMO web site is inexplicably offering me full 2-year upgrade pricing now. I'm very interested in the MyTouch 4G ($199), but they're also offering the Samsung Vibrant for free, which is pretty sweet. My other option would be to wait until y true upgrade cycle, by which point there should be even better phones for the same $199 price as the MyTouch.

I do need something that's reliably rootable so that I can use wifi tethering (for free). Both the vibrant and mytouch look pretty solid in this regard.

Thoughts?

PS: if I renew my contract now, will it add 2 years from today's date, or from my current contract end date?

I will tell you what everyone will tell you and that is to wait until after CES (starts Jan 6th). If anything, the release of new phones will drop the price of the current ones. Now is a bad time to buy a new phone and you'll regret it.

Edit: date fix

Edit2: Captivate is samsung right? Sorry man =( I feel for you. Samsung is terrible with software updates. Have you tried rooting and putting on a custom rom like cyanogenmod?

Have any AT&T Captivate owners gotten their Froyo OTA yet? What the fuck, already?

Thanks! I think they've already dropped the price of current phones, if the free vibrant is any indication. Didn't know about CES.

Can anyone answer my contract renewal date question?

2 years from the day you renew it.

I'm think of leaving AT&T for Verizon or Sprint. I just can't stand AT&T's network anymore.
At the moment I'm leaning towards sprint, any suggestions?

Im in the same boat. I am waiting until after CES to make my decision, but it looks like Evo 4G on Sprint will be the way to go.

No US carriers have received the froyo OTA

might as well root it and install a froyo rom

Evo is pretty underpowered vs. the Galaxy S..but it's a Samsung phone and Samsung phones are pure shit.

I'd wait or get the Sanyo android phone...because it's purrrrrrrrrre google.

Evo Shift 4g should be coming out next week. It's basically a smaller evo with a slide out keyboard. 800mhz processor (same as the g2), 8mp cam (or 5, depending on who you talk to), yadda yadda should be a good option for sprint.

Best currently available Android phone on T-Mobile? I'm gonna be upgrading soon and want a smartphone, currently deciding between the HD7 Windows Phone and one of the Android phones. The only thing I'm wondering is if there's a traditional Facebook app for Android and if you can use the web browser on 3G.

Another option is to drop T-Mobile all together and go for Virgin Mobile, but the only Android phone they have is the Samsung Intercept. Any opinions on it? I can still make some crazy customization to the UI right?

IMO the best android phone currently available for TMO is the MyTouch 4G. Some people seem to prefer the Samsung Vibrant, which TMO is currently offering for free with a 2-year upgrade. Check out some video reviews. If you look above, you'll see that people have suggested I wait until after CES to buy a new phone.

Not sure what you're asking about the web browser. Of course it works on 3G....

Well, the Nexus S seems like a good call, Gingerbread, pure Android, etc...

Wow at Go Launcher!!

http://lifehacker.com/5724233/go-la...-shortcuts-galore-to-your-android-home-screen

In our battle of the home screen launchers, we found that ADW and LauncherPro filled pretty specific niches in the Launcher world. If you don't want to pick between them, and you don't need some of the more advanced features, Go Launcher is a great alternative. It includes the themability and screen gestures of ADW, while adding the scrollable, customizable, gesture-filled dock and smooth performance of LauncherPro.

I already own both LauncherPro and ADW EX. Might give this a try down the road, once it matures a little more.

I have not seen this posted yet, but Sprint officially anounced the Shift Evo 4G:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-EVO-Shift-4G-announced-officially-by-Sprint_id15689

Dubbed as the successor of the acclaimed HTC EVO 4G by Sprint itself, it adds a physical slide-out QWERTY, and shrinks its screen size to 3.6" with 480x800 pixels of resolution. It is powered by a second-gen Snapdragon chipset, clocked at 800MHz, has 512MB RAM/2GB ROM, and a 5MP camera with LED flash, capable of HD video. The HTC EVO Shift 4G will have the newest version of HTC Sense UI, which means it will sport some offline navigational capabilities and access to HTCSense.com for remote backup and management of the phone.

i keep waiting for the damn verizon iphone so people can GTFO of ATT. Last thing i want to do is jump to verizon and a month later have it get crushed by the iphone while people left on ATT are sitting there going "this is awesome"

As far as phones... dual core or bust. I'm not buying another phone if its not a dual core

The Intercept is a completely different phone with 2.2. Much better.

Ughhh looks like Verizon is updating their plan and removing the annual upgrade option. That makes choosing a phone that much more important... you're stuck with it for 2 years! =(

Switching to Android was the best phone related thing i did in my life.
Just found out that i can set a album with wallpapers as Live-Background so that everytime i unlock the phone it puts a different wallpaper there (HTC Desire HD, 2.2 Stock Rom with HTC Sense). Yeah i know it nothing but coming from Symbian S60 and Bada (Samsung) it's like a new world. And i quite like HTC Sense.
Let's see how long it takes HTC to smack their Sense into 2.3.

I'm curious, is there a reason the desire z has htc sense, and not the g2?
