Its definitely one of the highest selling android phones, but its performance in intensive applications is quite underwhelming at this point. Id look to the shift personally (which is supposed to be a smaller form factor, no?)
 
I don't really get why Google don't a) make Android more modular, so it's easier to push updates, b) make a decent skinning engine so OEMs can put on their own bullshit skins but users can still choose stock.

Was thinking of saying exactly this before I read your response.

It's a shame that they didn't start with the modular thing until recently. IMO, modular designs for OSs are better for users and probably development.

Doubletwist is a great podcast and media player. Has lock screen controls too so you can get basic functionality without having to unlock your phone.

There's absolutely nothing stopping OEMs from approaching b that way now. Plenty of developers provide their home launcher alternatives precisely that way on the Market. Android already is pretty modular, the way it's built around activities and intents that can be interchangeable.

It's pretty irritating the way they integrated the kernel and the free software libraries they use into a monolithic development model from the outset.

Shift is a step down from the EVO hardware wise. It shouldnt even be called a EVO.

The Atrix comes with a Citrix client for the webtop/laptop mode. I think that'll be better than using an Android app fullscreen (depending on the cost of course). It's nice to have other options though.

Yeah, I'm another Atrix convert. I'll wait first for the HP/Palm announcement on Feb 9 but if they don't announce something similar for webOS, I'll be picking up the Atrix. What's Motorola's support for their phones like? Do they get timely updates?

Processor wise, the Shift shits on the Evo 4G. It's pretty much a G2 or Desire Z modified to work with Sprint. The lower stock clock is pretty deceptive as it is an overclocking beast. XDA has a kernel for it to run at 1.8 GHz.

Right. The Shift has a newer gen processor than the Evo and it is better both CPU and GPU wise. Although clearly the screen is smaller. Its the same as the upcoming Thunderbolt on Verizon which is effectively an Evo in size and shape with the second gen processor.

The problem with that is not all companies deploy Citrix for connectivity though.

Oh, I thought the citrix client could connect to any vnc/rdp server. I'll be using it with my home computer so I can download the citrix server, although mac os x version is gimped compared to the windows version (apple's fault)... This is getting more complicated than i expected.

My droid x hardware is much faster than an evo. Considering the shift=g2>Droid x...the og evo is pretty far behind.

You are right. I just checked with my IT guy, he said it should work.

One thing I do want to see for Atrix is more hands on and videos of just the phone in action. We have seen good enough of what it can do with the docking stations.

She likes small phones, no slider, high end.

Is the Atrix going to be able to sideload apps without root?
 
Okay. Fuck it. I'm jailbreaking my MyTouch Slide. I know I can just Google the procedure, but can anybody tell me if there is any horrific consequences if I fail the process?
 
Picked up my Desire HD yesterday and the first thing I installed was Game Dev Story, so good! (both the phone and the game) :lol . The screen is huuuuge compared to the old N70 Nokia I upgraded from. Getting unlimited broadband/internet access for it today for 2eur a month too. Paying a total of 25eur a month for the phone and internet, a fairly good deal since the phone alone costs about 600e here and it's a 24 month contract.

I was reading up on how to properly start using a new phone/battery and the whole fully charge and discharge your battery for the first 3 or 4 times seems to be a hoax. Is there any actual evidence of it prolonging battery life or is it just a placebo for some people? Batteryuniversity.com says it's pointless with modern lithium-ion batteries and could potentially even harm the battery. So should I just charge it when I feel like it? I was hoping some of you guys have personal experience on this :D .

Modern lithium batteries don't get better for every charges and it doesn't really ruin them either. The life of the battery is most likely going to outlive the phone anyway no worries.

:( why does the AT&T even care about side-loading apps? And Motorola locks down the bootladers of their phones making them harder to hack. This make me trepidatious about the Atrix.

its easy enough to get around ATT's block, and their reasoning makes a slice of sense (for them). They don't want you to be able to install something not official or approved by a market entity that could possibly negatively affect your phone and/or their network

Edit: n/m then. If you're rooted you can install market enabler to allow you to switch markets from country to country :D

My gf is getting a SE X10 Mini Pro delivered tomorrow, I know its not the best android device but she got a really good deal for it (£15 for basically unlimited calls, texts and internet).

I was just wondering what are your guys currently most used apps? And also I have not been able to see how the X10 Mini does messaging but she really likes the 'converstation' style/iPhone. I know I can install chompsms but I would like to keep it as simple as possible.

I've got a few apps that I will install right away,

Angry Birds
Google Googles
Dropbox
Facebook
Twitter
Maps

Any more essential apps?

I am also thinking of getting the Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade, anybody on gaf got it?

The Playstation app is pretty sweet I really like the interface of it,wish it was a bit faster grabbing trophy info, can't wait til the US version is released so it will go to the US blog and such.

It would be nice if you could message your friends from it though it's a nice start.

Don't expect wonders from the battery.the huge display eats most of it.lower the display light and don't walk around with wlan/bluetooth on. Like someone said there is alot of bullshit how to charge li battery on the net. Charge it how you like.and get a second one (around 20€). Enjoy the dhd.it's a beast and i love it.good site for apps is androidpit.

In Terms of SMS, Handcent and GoSMS are two nice alternatives as well.

I would definitely recommend app organizer, it allows you to customize folders on your screens. I've had it in rotation since I found it. Word up is also a pretty fun time waster.

Other than that, it's pretty much up to your preference. I've paid for a few apps:
Beautiful widgets
Pure calendar
Profile (lets me configure a phone only profile a la the BB)

I like My6Sense. It consolidates Facebook, Twitter and any RSS feeds you might like to follow into one stream. It applies some AI to that to figure out what will be most relevant to your interests (it builds this over time as you use it) and generally works well. But you can also just view those streams chronologically and turn M6S's AI-determined relevance. It also allows you to post updates simultaneously to FB, Twitter and Google Buzz.

yeah, I figured. Well, do you know Motorola's reasons for locking their bootloaders? Is there a good chance that the Atrix won't come with a locked bootloader? Do bootloaders even matter that much?
