Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

I downloaded the game Hero of Sparta when it was free during Gameloft's Advent Calendar promotion. But now the sound files for it (all 109 of them) are showing up in the Music app. I added a dummy file named .nomedia to the folder, but they still show up. Anyone here have any ideas?

This thread, despite being awesome, makes me feel poor :(
Need to buy a new phone and was thinking about buying a droid but for now I'd have to go budget.
So far the best thing I've found has been a version of the Orange Boston, specs here: http://www.gsmarena.com/gigabyte_gsmart_g1305_boston-3201.php
I also have my eye on the San Francisco, mostly because of the larger screen, but that'd be 70 euro over the Boston

Anyone with experience with this one? Since this'd be my first smartphone i'm not expecting to do it all, extra features would be reading ebooks on the go and using (if able) gba and snes emulators :p
For playing gba and snes games you'll want a hardware keyboard on the phone. Certain games are simply not enjoyable with touchscreen only controls. I found one CNET article—Best cheap Android phones—invaluable back in December when I was considering getting an inexpensive phone.

Edit: XDA has a dedicated forum for the Orange San Francisco (known as ZTE Blade in America). XDA community support makes life with any Android handset a lot easier.

What about a Droid X or Incredible? I'm considering those right now.

Did you reboot your phone?

Man prepaid Android phones are practically impossible to pay for :lol Most are more expensive than a home console.. (400-500€)

GBA and NES (Play them the most) look and play awesome on my X with it's big screen. The touch screen controls take some getting use to but there are plenty of options to help you, however I tend to use my Wiimote as a controller anyway so it isn't even an issue. :)

...the fuck?

I love Samsung, but this is typical of Korean electronics design. Outside of HTC, I can't think of a distinctive looking product from a Korean company.

Even Hyundais look like cars from other companies.

To the people with the G2: Is the hinge a problem for the keyboard? I'm worried about it breaking and thus thinking about the myTouch 4G instead...

No issues on my end! Maybe Jamesfrom818 can chime in.

Sightings of 2.4 make me believe that Gingerbread was halfbaked on the S. 2.4 might still be Gingerbread, just like 2.0 and 2.1 were both enclair.

Might as well and wait for 2.4.

Wasn't 2.0 Donut?

I want FroYo on the Captivate. Damn you Samsung/AT&T..
Same here but I've rooted my Captivate. So, since 2.2 isn't coming to this phone anytime soon, what suggestions do you guys have for things like custom roms or whatever else. I just want my phone to run at peak performance. Thanks in advance.

wow. LOL

I think my mistake comes from months (years?) of my friend calling the 1.6 update for his Mytouch, Cupcake. Which in turn made me call 2.0 Donut, 2.1 Eclair (RIP Droid Eris) .. etc etc

Thanks. :) This place is so cold without the smilies though...

I thought it was just me. 2nd time I was wrong for the day. lol

Oh and I thought you were the secret ingredient in Gingerbread. Wrong Again. :|

I'd like to see a netflix app now, rather than having to wait for honeycomb to drop.
Of course that would be nice. I just don't expect it. But I don't see why not, we have flash now and phones fast enough to handle it.

Yeah. I wonder why it's taking so long to come out.

Go to xda forums...and I suggest getting Cognition first. It is basically the only custom rom built from a Captivate source (others are off the base galaxy s /i9000). There are tons of great roms, some different modems, different kernels....but I'd start with Cognition - nearly no bugs at all (actually I know of none), uses the ASOP launcher, clean, built off captivate source.

The new Cog 3 is built from the Armani 2.2 source, older cogs built from a beta froyo leak from Samsung forever ago.

The Captivate is an awesome phone that I absolutely love - but only because I have a custom froyo rom. My GPS is perfect, I don't have lags, no bloatware, good battery life.

If you currently have the stock rom, and rooted phone - the upgrade process is super easy. Basically download the custom rom (xxxxx.zip), put in the root of the internal SD card (just remove your external so you don't have confusion). Download Rom manager from market (free, by clockwork mod). Use to flash rom from SD card. Done!

Edit: also use something to backup your data if you want to keep it....more info on this at XDA

I love my droid 1 physical keyboard. But i need to get a new phone in about 6 months. Are the making any more droid (or any android phones that work for verision) phones with keyboards besides the droid 2.

A lot of phones could come out in 6 months time, I'd wait and see what gets released but I think Verizon will have another phone with a keyboard the HTC Merge if it ever comes out, not sure what else they have coming out down the line with a keyboard unless the Droid 3 comes out this year.

So I realised today why some people are on 1.6 - phone companies are shit.

A good friend came round, and has an Xperia X10 - on 1.6. I presumed they'd be an update, checked, but you have to use PC software. Fair enough.
Oh, no, to make it worse - you have to back up everything, because it wipes the phone.

Took a while and was a bit of a faff really. It's impressive that others do OTA updates fine - this one does an OTA check and went "go to the website and download Windows only software!".

Great, thanks.

Hi AndroidGAF,

Thinking about moving over to Android when I can upgrade in a couple of months, but I'm on Rogers with a plan I can't give up, and my experiences with on-screen keyboards have been painful to say the least.

From looking at the options on google.com/phone, it looks like I'm fucked if I try to get anything now that isn't the Flipout. Is there anything expected to hit in the next couple of months that might be suitable?

Holy crap....Spectral Souls on Android (a port, not a ROM or anything).

It probably runs like crap on my Eris, and it was an okay game...but I wonder how it controls.

Been leaning towards the X, but a little unsure because of it's size. I would also appreciate some info/feedback on hows the camera(outdoor, indoor, macro) and how long on average the battery will last.

I've been reading up on rooting and a lot of websites say that it's hard to do on the X, but then again most posts that I'm finding are from June on last year. Has this changed?

I'm running a custom ROM on my X. Battery is definitely better compared to stock. My battery is still at 80% and I took it off the charger around 8:30AM today (it's 4:30 ET now). I haven't done much on my phone today (sent/received a bunch texts, played a 3D game for like 5 minutes, played music for around an hour), but that' still impressive IMO. There's also an extended battery available.

As far as mods/rooting/ROMs, Motorola locked the bootloader on the X. From what I understand, this basically means only Moto can make changes to/issue a new kernel. Whenever a new release of Android comes out (for example, the recently released 2.3 Gingerbread), the kernel needs to be updated. So basically no Gingerbread on the X until Moto says so.

You can still root and mod the device to your hearts content though. Lots of awesome custom Android 2.2 ROMs are available. Check out the Droid X section on the XDA forums.

I'm pretty big (6 foot 185 lbs) and the X feels perfect in my hands. I don't think I can ever buy a phone that is smaller than 4 inches now.
