Samsung Mobile emailed Phone Scoop a brief statement to settle some of the rumors that have been flying about regarding the Android 2.2 update for its Galaxy S smartphones. One report suggested that the delay is being caused in part because Samsung wants carriers to pay for Android updates. Samsung says this is not true. Samsung wrote to Phone Scoop, "No. Samsung is not charging carriers for Froyo updates to Galaxy S. We hope to have more detail on status shortly. Promise!" Samsung has pushed back the Froyo update for its Galaxy S line of devices several times, leaving them stuck with Android 2.1. Samsung has sold more than 4 million Galaxy S handsets in the U.S.
Samsung sounds like the deadbeat kid who always promises he'll bring his homework in tomorrow.

Google Music, their upcoming cloud-based music store. Which I believe will be integrated into the Android Market online website.

Ooh alright cool... Android Market online website..?

So much I don't know! I just visited it, was expecting a little bit more I guess. I think Android would benefit from a webapp Android sync client/store like what Apple is doing with iTunes imo.

Or even better: a webapp.

Wonder if the manufacturers would be a barrier to that.

Oh yeah, I should have said webapp, that is what Google would do obviously anyway, with ChromeOS and all.

Any thoughts about the Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade in other areas)?

I'm almost buying one, seems to have a great screen quality (800x480 AMOLED), 512MB RAM, 600MHz and with 2.2 Roms working perfect. Is there any big problem with this model? It costs very few for what it (seems to) offer!

Does anyone here have a Nookcolor? It runs android and should get some 3rd party apps ported to it soon.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what is coming out for it yet.

Picked up my girlfriends Droid X, anything recommended or needed with this thing?

Also, best RSS feed app?

Google Reader is really good. Simple and Effective, and it syncs with my chrome extension which is awesome.

There is a Nook Color thread. I own one (probably not for much longer). Tapiozona and PSGames are other Gaffers who love theirs. Still waiting on B&N's official road map for the device. Last I heard they were still trying to decide between aiming for a Froyo, Gingerbread or Honeycomb update. The update was supposed to come early this year, along with the B&N app market, so it's probably not going to be Honeycomb.

Are you interested in selling yours?

I've found a buyer but I'm weighing up the pros and cons of selling it. It's a nice little tablet that's great value for money but I'm pooling my resources towards a new phone.

oh crap. I've heard the TFT ones have only 256mb ram, is it true? :(

Some do come locked to 256MB but you can easily unlock the extra RAM that is being withheld on the phone.

For the money it's a great phone, even with the TFT screen it's still a bloody bargain for what it is.

£430 ;p. The contract deals aren't that bad, it's still cheaper than an iphone.

I'm due an upgrade in June/July but don't think 3 are offering it on their network. Will have to sell whatever upgrade I get (as well as my N1) and then maybe purchase the NS if there isn't anything better out by then.

So no date on when this update will come out?
Unfortunately, the charge Samsung wanted the blog to pay to get access to the actual date was too expensive for them to justify paying since the date was either to be delayed or an outright lie to begin with.

I thought it was a scratch at first, but there's a small white piece of dust now under my Droid X screen. Usually not noticeable but kind of annoying. I thought this only happened on Nokias from 1998 (kinda joking...).

Looks like Samsung is announcing their next Galaxy S phone. I think this is the one that looks just like an iPhone 4 rip-off?

I just hope that in the USA their sales number drop significantly.
People should stay away from phones that will likely never get the latest OS updates.

I have one. It doesn't look like there's been anything definitive announced yet, as Charred already pointed out.

But rooting it is pretty simple at this point, such that I'm not sure I care anymore.

Anyone here heard anything about the Major League Baseball app for the '11 season? Last season the iphone version had live game streaming but the Android app did not even though each cost $15. Android was audio only in '10.

I can honestly say that I don't give a shit about what Samsung produces anymore until they get off their high horse.

You're pretty loyal, sticking with the G1 for that long.

The thing is a tank, It still works and runs most of the app's I need it to. I am up for an upgrade and since they were offering the G2 for free I figured what the hell.

I did struggle deciding between the Galaxy S and the G2 but in the end after hearing so many complaints about samsung and updates I went with HTC.

What can the G1 run? Are there custom ROMs for Gingerbread?

what's the easiest way of getting rid of all the bloatware that came with my Droid X from Verizon? (Blockbuster app, Madden NFL 11, NFS, etc.)

Do they show up in the Applications menu in the settings?

And games for free? I wouldn't mind that! :P

Yes, they show on the applications menu in the setting but the "Uninstall" box is greyed out. And the games are just demos I think, you actually have to pay for the full game and I'm not really interested in any of them.

Ooh, well that's pretty lame. You might have to root to get rid of them, or you can use something like Launcher Pro to simply hide them.

First you must root. Get the "One-click Root" app called z4root.

Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953

Get the .apk in the first post there. If you are new to Android, a .apk in Android is basically like a .exe in Windows. I believe you must create an XDA account to download the file. Make sure you have it set up on your phone so you can side-load apps (default Droid X setting is to only allow Market apps to be installed. There's an option somewhere in Settings to change this). To get the .apk onto your phone, either send it to yourself in Gmail and open up the attachment, or if you use Chrome to Phone you can send it that way.

After you are rooted, go to the XDA Droid X Developers forum:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=691

The most popular ROMs are Fission, GummyJar, and Liberty.

I can't speak for the others, but Fission was extremely easy to get up and running. Check out the creators website here: http://www.teamdefuse.com/roms/install-instructions-and-downloads/

Thanks, will give this a shot.

edit: that one-click app worked like a charm. Afterwards I used Titanium Backup to get rid of the bloatware. Thanks!

From what I understand, the only thing the dev community can't do is mess with the kernel. I'm on a Droid X running a glorious custom ROM right now. I get way better battery life, no Moto/Verizon crap on my phone, and it runs way smoother.
I flash kernels all the time on my G2. I like being able to overclock and undervolt.

oh, well ok. But you can overclock/undervolt w/ Droid X custom ROMs. Though maybe there are more technical reasons why the locked bootloader is bad, I'm not sure.

I got one for my mom and my friend, out the box its ok for what it is supposed to do.. I then learned how to "root" it (took a total of 10 mins start to finish) and now they love it that much more... its an android tablet basically.. its actually a great deal for the cost.. so worth it

Jamesfrom818 said:

That's a little dumb. I'm sure there would be much fewer rooters if Android phones were supported with updates for more than 8-10 months (as they currently leave the users stuck with outdated software for over 2 years unless they root it)

Sure, those who legitimately want to mess with their phone and mod it should do so on their own, and Motorola is actually within its rights in limiting that. I have a much harder time agreeing with the fact it also prevents users from using custom updates when there's no official support anymore. Either you prevent rooting and support the phone for the entire typical 2-3 years (2 years seems typical in the US, but up north 3 years is the norm. Not sure about other countries) contract it's sold on, or you don't prevent it at all. Otherwise they're just being dicks.

I really want an Atrix too, and to spite them i'm going to wait until it's hacked and buy it.
Me too. although I'm not really getting it for the phone just for the webtop app. If some one extracts the webtop app and gets it working on a Nexus 3 (running Honeycomb), I'll drop Motorola in a heartbeat. *still waiting for the damn release dates and prices*
