Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

I'm really disappointed in the HTC tablet. Their phones are awesome, and I was planning on buying an HTC tablet, but this just sucks. I don't a fuck about a pen, just give a 10inch tablet with great specs and nice hardware.

HTC sense doesn't really matter if it has honeycomb, but this just fails hard.

If that tablet is over 299 then it's garbage... why even bother? Has anyone seen honeycomb on anything other then a tegra 2 processor?

I dunno, I sorta like the direction HTC is going with the Flyer at least. The Scribe features sound like something more tablets should really offer OTOB. I think having a stylus as an option is a good thing. Specs seem pretty respectable overall, just wish it was getting Honeycomb.

If it's 299 or under it would be worth a shot, but it's not worth anything over that, and I wouldn't hold out any hope for a honeycomb upgrade

I wouldn't expect HC either anytime soon. I'd go as high as $400 though. They're actually making some effort here to differentiate, which is more than I can say for the other tablets right now. Scribe tech, Timemark, HTC Watch, OnLive. Timemark in particular sounds really nice, if executed well:

A feature called Timemark enables you to capture the audio of a meeting in line with your written notes, so tapping on a word in your notes instantly takes you to that exact place in time in the audio recording of the meeting. Notes are also integrated with the calendar so when there is an appointment reminder you are automatically prompted with an opportunity to begin a new note or in the case of recurring meetings, to continue where the last meeting left off. In an industry first, the HTC Flyer tablet also features built-in synchronization with Evernote, the world-leading notes application and service.

Gizmodo's preview does a good job of laying out the Flyer:

Looks similar to Asus' stylus tablet and that one costs around $500 if I remember correctly. HTC's may have better specs too...

Need something more. Flyer just doesn't do it for me.

The Netflix story on Engadget makes me a sad panda

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/android-powered-lg-revolution-caught-streaming-netflix-at-mwc-v/

Important part:

the bad news is that existing smartphones -- even existing Snapdragon devices -- will not be able to utilize the app. Without new hardware, the Android version of the Netflix app simply won't function, and no one at Qualcomm was willing to tell us when these Netflix-friendly Snapdragon chips would begin to ship out.

*sigh* :/

Anything I'm missing? I'm sure I must be.

Toshiba Tablet(s).

lg optimus pad (8.9")
asus transformer (10.1"), slider (10.1"), memo (7")
acer iconia a500 (10.1"), a100 (7")

all the above have tegra 2 except for memo which has a dual-core snapdragon.

I don't understand why Netflix on Android has such limitations when Netflix has put their software on just about every other conceivable software/hardware platform by now.

And it's running on Google TV, isn't it? Which is Android...

According to Engadget, it's the DRM.

Oh, I know what the stated reason is. I just don't know why it's valid. They've dealt with the DRM issue on what has to be a dozen or more platforms by now.

\/\/\/\/\/ esquire, I've seen that. I'm not sure what the "security issues that have led to piracy concerns" are in real terms. I really doubt the rest of the platforms that Netflix runs on are particularly hardy in terms of security.

So does this "Netflix only on new Qualcomm SnapDragon chips" limitation mean nothing for other chips like Hummingbird (are there other chips out there that are used in Android phones?)?

has there been talk about netflix on tegra2? i don't care if netflix runs on my phone, but i sure as hell expect it to run on my tablet. and if its not going to be supported on any of the honeycomb tablets, that's going to be a huge disappointment

A friend of mine was going to get a VZW iPhone last week, but was informed that she wasn't eligible for an upgrade for almost another year. So she sold me her Droid X and jumped ship to AT&T on the 10th. Now Verizon is telling me that the porting process has her account locked until the end of her billing cycle, which means I can't activate the X until March 3. I've talked to half a dozen different people at Verizon who have all told me there's nothing they can do to speed up the process. WTF.

Here's official work on Honeycomb's DRM:

Pluggable DRM framework

Android 3.0 includes an extensible DRM framework that lets applications manage protected content according to a variety of DRM mechanisms that may be available on the device. For application developers, the framework API offers an consistent, unified API that simplifies the management of protected content, regardless of the underlying DRM engines.

I'm not sure if Netflix has made any comment regarding this.

Yeah disappointed with the HTC offerings :(

I really hope the Pyramid is true as I feel like upgrading my N1 mid to late this year.

Anything left to look forward to at MWC? It seems like HTC was the last set of anticipated announcements.

Unless I'm looking at the times wrong, Eric Schmidt's keynote should be starting in about an hour.

I'm not sure they will announce anything there. However, I guess it's time to start the hype train?

I think Netflix is angling for an agreement with a manufacturer or carrier (similar to what Verizon hooked up with Skype). While they are dragging their feet over Android though, Apple has leveraged this powerful position to demand a share of Netflix's subscriptions revenue. Heh

The fork in the road is coming and it's coming faster every waking day. Apple will not be able to tax these companies forever.

Not to beat a dead horse (it's not dead yet!), here's more fuel for why Netflix's claim that individual Android devices need their own separate DRM solution is bunk:

First Blu-Ray release offering Digital Copy on Android. Only requirements imposed on the Android device are that it be running 1.6 or higher and have the Pocket Blu app installed.

Could there be some kind of deal going on with MS/Apple and netflix? I just don't buy this shit about DRM when Netflix is present on a trillion or so devices, some of which are open platforms.

Wait, Apple is asking for a cut of the Netflix subscription revenue just because their is an App on their store?

That Wifi-connected Blu-Ray Live drive probably has a lot of industry-approved DRM in it.

No, if users want to subscribe in-app (they can also subscribe on the Netflix site), Apple gets a cut; Apple will not get a cut if users choose to not go through Apple and subscribe on the Netflix site though.

I believe that's only to get the digital copy transferred to Android. Once there, you can watch it anywhere, there doesn't need to be an ongoing connection to BD Live drive. The DRM solution, whatever it is, therefore needs to be standalone.

However, even if you did need that ongoing connection, wouldn't this essentially be the same as what Netflix streaming requires? An ongoing connection to a Netflix-certified host (i.e. their servers) is required to use Netflix streaming.

This is called the Advent Vega in the UK. It seems like great value. It comes with 2.2 but has no store, but there is a Modaco ROM that adds it and everything else you need. Apparently it will get Gingerbread, no word on Honeycomb but im sure someone will get a ROM on it.
I saw a video on Youtube with a modified and it was really, really fast. How much is it in the UK?

£249.99, which is £190 cheaper than the cheapest iPad. It obviously has flaws but at that price you can overlook alot of them. It is great value. It currently doesn't have 3G but there is room on the mobo for it and they said they will release an updated model this year with 3G included.

Ignore the 'Non-Flash' part, they released an update a few days ago that includes flash.I haven't been able to play with one yet but my local store seems to have some info on it that suggests they'll get a floor model in soon.

Netflix is not currently offering any in-app subscriptions—nor linking to the Netflix website via Safari for buying subscriptions—but Apple is now demanding that they do so. So, in effect, Apple is demanding a share of Netflix's subscription revenue.

Wait, is Apple demanding they offer a link to the website, subscription through itunes or both?
