Ah ok, than that must be it. I can't really see the extreme hate for what is on the Atrix.

My Droid X is like twice as fast w/ a custom ROM compared to whatever version of Blur comes on the X.

I don't really hate their design choices or whatever w/ Blur, it just made the X run a lot worse. I guess this will become less and less a problem as the phones get more powerful.

meant to ask earlier - how? Or is explaining further verboten on this forum?

its nothing bad, i dont know the steps, you just have to change the user agent on your browser and you can stream through the website

and now I'm a proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S! I've been installing a couple of widgets but nothing too serious, and since I'm a complete android noob, I'd be grateful to hear app recommendations, how to customize my home screen, etc.

This phone rocks :D

You actually liked sense? That thing is an abomination. They removed the stock apps for the shitty HTC ones. If I had to stick with sense on my evo I'd go back to an iPhone.
I liked Sense when I had my EVO. The HTC agenda widget was great, the messaging app was nice (though I did use Handcent) and I liked the Sense launcher better than stock (2.2 stock launcher was much better than 2.1 though). The dialer was nicer too. All in my opinion of course.

What stock apps did HTC remove?

Thanks. Guess I need to upgrade to Froyo build for Flash then.

ha, i was trying to get my wife to talk me out of it and she told me to go get it. I was going to get a laptop, but for the extent of things i would use a laptop for this will cover me

Quick question:

Have had my droid rooted but on stock for months now. Used to use Bugless Beast (year or so ago) but haven't run a custom rom in awhile. Tons of new ones since I stopped. Can anyone tell me what the best ROM to run on an original Droid would be?

The dialer, contacts, messages, clock, calculator, and probably others. Then they threw in they're own hideous butt ugly HTC versions. Going from Sense to AOSP is a god send. THe only thing i miss is that 4g isn't working 100% on custom roms.

so I download Launcher Pro...but I can't like change the dock short cuts or applications the icon launches.

Like, the phone and people icon both are launching the dialer. I try to change it to contact but it doesn't seem to save it.

Any help?

Ok, looks like I figured it out. Had to change icon and then shortcut and not change swipe gesture action...

o mi god, one point less than the iPad! Fanboys!

Battery life on the Xoom was excellent. Beyond excellent, actually -- some of the best performance we've seen. Running a video on loop with the screen set at 65 percent brightness, we were able to get playback for nearly eight and a half hours (8:20 to be exact). Motorola claims up to ten, so we weren't far off the mark at all. We had a few background tasks going on, and both WiFi and 3G radios were active. We could easily see maximizing this if you're in airplane mode with a slightly lower brightness setting.
This is great.

Hey fellow droid gaf,

I have been using the Milestone / Droid for 1 year now, and i feel like its time for an upgrade. I live in Canada and my contract is with telus.

I am looking for a phone that's close to the Evo 4g /Droid X, and so far it seems like the HTC HD from telus is the best pick. Posting here to see if anyone has any other recommendation.

yup, which phone do you have? with the captivate upgrading tomorrow there shouldnt be too many left below froyo?
no, womp was talking about the Nook Color. I have the N1 for my phone, so I'm good there. I was curious about getting Amazon Instant running on the Nook Color. I ran autonooter a few weeks back to get a basic 2.1 build on there, but I haven't checked back in to go higher than that.

Desire HD, that's the closest to the EVO. Just be mindful of the small battery

yup, looks like what i was expecting. I have no concerns over the hardware quality... some... interesting design choices with the speakers at the rear, but what i think most here were saying in the lead up to its launch... google rushed out honeycomb to beat apple to the ipad2 punch and get something on the market. Its definitely going to push through a few iterations to work some kinks out.

So anyone knowing if the Galaxy S II is coming to T-mobile? I'm either going to jump to T-Mobile and grab a Nexus S or LG Optimus if it comes to T-Mobile.
Don't think carriers have been mentioned, but I'd bet good money that Samsung will put variants on all US carriers like they did with the original Galaxy S.

all the reviews seem pretty consistent, but i love the overall no flash omg theme... and the pcmag bottom line made me chuckle...

The Motorola Xoom for Verizon Wireless is the best Android tablet yet, but with a lack of key features (like Flash video and SD card slot support) and mediocre apps at launch, it doesn't measure up to the Apple iPad.

with a lack of features at launch that apple doesnt and never will have, it doesnt measure up to the ipad.

definitely seems like a growing process with honeycomb

Well to be fair... all of us Android nuts are beta testers.... Not sure why some of these blogs can't figure that one out.

I'm loving the "con" of "look the app is stretched out", but they overlook the fact that the apps works 100% with zero changed from the developers.

Then there's engadgets "Google needs to step up their tablet support effort"......right after talking about every single Google application having a proper tablet layout.

Yes, not alot of day 1 applications, but developers do not need to rewrite their apps for tablet support, they just need to add tablet support (unlike ios).

Will wait ars's review to decide whether I like the tablet or not.

I wish these sites would label their previews properly. Reviews shouldn't be written without spending a week with a device. Especially devices that cost $500+.

LTE = end of May: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/motorola-xoom-will-get-lte-in-approximately-90-days-requires/

Does not compute.

If the non-functional microSD slot is true, on top of lack of Flash and 4G support at launch, early Xoom buyers should demand like $200 credit on their purchase, to be paid later when these features actually become enabled.

I'd like to see Honeycomb do well for Android, but not like this.

Husker86 said:
It's non functional right now for whatever reason. Yeah, that won't be confusing.

edit: unless the engadget review was wrong.
Yes, definitely not ideal. I wish we could get answers on what Google wants to do with the slot different from normal causing the issue.

No arguments here on the fact if you want something fully fleshed out with tab apps that the ipad is better today, honeycomb seems to be trying to sell on potential and just getting its name out now which I'm not 100% sure is the best idea with some of the reported software issues.

It's interesting though, I'm not expecting a new os release along with the ipad2 so once the webos tablets hit apple will be the only one without a fully fleshed tablet "os"

Josh Topolsky is probably going to be showing off the Xoom tonight on Jimmy Fallon, if anyone's interested. I'm only guessing--don't hold me to that!

Xoom just sounds a bit rough around the edges. I wonder how long it'll take Google to clean up some of those rough edges. I like the core of Honeycomb, but I really want more of the Apple polish. I think the direction they're moving in is definitely better than iOS at this point in time.

I need to start watching Kimmel

Marty... I wasn't around for early android so hopefully others here can comment on how things progressed in the early days

The thing that bugs me with reviews like this is the rushed feeling of them. Such is the nature of the beast with "Tech News" these days, I guess. Gotta have that review done before everyone else to get in front of the news cycle. It is just annoying though. I wish more places would take some time, use the device for a couple weeks, get used to the device, learn all of its features, and THEN give us a review. I would gladly wait a couple weeks to sit through a thorough 20-30min YouTube video of a device. Instead, we get a big list of sites, all of whom banged out a few 1000 words, shot 5-8mins of footage, snapped a few pics, and then rushed to publish the second the embargo was lifted.

As it stands now, most reviews for these things are little more than a quick reading of the spec sheet, a few flicks in and out of some apps, a couple "I liked this, but didn't like this" statements, and BANG, published. This is obviously not unheard of to most of us here on GAF, what with "Game Journalism" amounting to little more than the same shotgun style of publishing. I would honestly pay a monthly subscription for a site that took its time with crap like this, and didn't worry about news cycles.

It's gonna be the Pre 3, as well

Tablet support doesn't require a new seperate application. It's just an added screen res layout.

It pulls in current activities and reflows them in conjuction with the new apis.

The default launcher on honeycomb lives inside of Launcher2.apk for example.
